Tinker Foundation Field Research Grants Competition is open!

The Center for Latin American Studies is accepting applications from graduate and professional students for Tinker Foundation Field Research Grants. These grants provide students with funds for travel to and within Latin America to conduct pre-dissertation research. Application are due Sunday, March 1, 2020.

We also encourage you come listen to one of our Tinker Talks this year, if you are interested in applying. These are held to allow Tinker fellows to discuss the research they conducted while abroad. The first one will be held Feb. 27th, featuring Lindsey Hernandez, Lucia Benetti, Raphael Palermo dos Santos, and Luana Lamberti.

A Discussion on U.S.-Mexico Trade Relations

Join us on Thursday, February 20 for a discussion with Professor Carlos Arévalo on the benefits of free trade in North America, rule of origin principles and proposed rule changes under NAFTA & USMCA, and trade remedies on products from China.

2020 CLASP Junior Faculty Teaching Award: Deadline Extended!

The Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP) calls for nominations for its eighth annual "CLASP Junior Faculty Teaching Award." The award recognizes excellence in teaching Latin American Studies designated courses. Nominees must have a Ph.D., and be currently teaching at a CLASP member institution. The nominator (or self-nominator) should briefly provide clear and convincing evidence of the following:

1. Outstanding teaching effectiveness, including pedagogical style and student success stories.
2. Contributions to the Latin American Studies program and/or the Department.
3. Involvement in the wider community, including professional associations and participation in service activities.
4. Incorporation of own academic research and field experiences into the classroom.

Nominees must also provide a Statement of Teaching Philosophy and a current CV. Nominations will be accepted through March 1st, 2020. If you have any questions, please contact Vincent T. Gawronski ([email protected]).

Spring Symposium: The Americas before 1620

Please join The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies for their Spring 2020 Symposium: "The Americas before 1620: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Indigenous Cultures, Colonialism, and Slavery." The symposium will take place Friday, February 21 - Saturday, February 22. Keynote speakers include: Alanna Radlo-Dzur (OSU, Art History), Karen Graubart (Notre Dame, History), Margaret Newell (OSU, History), Jeffrey Glover (Loyola Chicago, English), and David Silverman (GWU, History). This event is free and open to the public!

TEDxOSU: Anna Babel

Linguistic anthropologist Anna Babel studies the complex relationship between language and social categories. She is particularly interested in language contact, the politics of minority languages, and migration. On February 22, she will be presenting her talk on "Who counts as a speaker of a language?" As it turns out, the answer to this question is complex and deeply intertwined with the question of who we are - and how we are seen - as human beings.
