It's finally summer here in California. It's been unusually mild here and we've had quite a few overcast days well into July. But now the sun is out! The above photo really captures summer to me--happy, smiling young people on a Glen-L boat built by one of their fathers.
My last Newsletter was the end of May and somehow I missed June and now July is gone so happy August! There are a couple of articles from builders that have posted on our blog that I think you'll find interesting. Also, I'm posting some tips as well as a link to a very important story from our Forum that pertains to a safety issue you should be aware of.
The Gathering of Glen-L Boatbuilders is coming up in September, so check out the info about that below.
Also, our bronze wood screw supplier has informed us that they are raising prices because of the tariffs. We're looking at a 25% increase next time we order! From what I understand, there's one manufacturer of silicon bronze wood screws and they are in China. Thought we'd give you a heads-up.
I do hope this Newsletter is helpful...

John,
By the way, I already gave a look to the
electric design plans
and wasn't expecting papers as detailed as that, that's fantastic! All and more than needed with everything explained, thanks!
Have a beautifully bright day,
Best Regards,
David
Hi Gayle,
I have been intending to drop you a note to let you know that I have been enjoying the Newsletters and website. I am currently reading
Boatbuilding with Plywood
, which is very informative! The pictures and stories are very inspirational.
I will definitely be building a Glen-L boat (or two or three) in the not too distant future. I am thinking I will probably start with a
Zip
, but that project is probably going to start in the fall of 2020 (when I retire!). I have several projects stacked up between now and then, but making progress. Take care and thanks again,
Mike Harlan

Tip #1 - Save your receipts for everything you use to build your boat. These will be helpful when registering your boat. The registering entity varies for each state, but they usually want to know how much it cost to build. Make a copy for yourself.

It took a little over two years, but my wife Claire and I finally finished our new boat, the
Glen-L Minuet
. When I retired, everyone said that I was making a mistake, that I would be bored in about two months. So, since we sold our Catalina 30 right before we retired and moved to Tennessee, we needed a new boat.
What better way to keep from being bored than to build a boat in our garage. I’ve built 6 boats prior to this, in my younger life, so it wasn’t too hard to make that decision. Also, Claire enjoys working on things with me so she was all for building a boat as well.

This custom kit was developed using
Glen-L Zip
plans by Mark Molden of Benchmark Products in California. His precision CNC cut complete wood kit allows you to begin assembling your boat the minute you unpack it...no tracing, measuring or cutting needed!
See our site for details!
"Through my detailed receipts, I spent about $2200 on wood for my Zip 10 years ago and it wasn't CNC cut to fit!!! Great price point, it really makes sense to just buy the kit at this price. " - Chris Atwood
The very first ZipKit purchaser is currently building his Zip utilizing the kit and posting photos and details about the build on our
Forum here. He estimates that he's saving about 30% - 40% of building time by using the kit!

I finished building my Malahini nearly 3 years ago. I finished the top surface deck with at least four coats of
Silver Tip Epoxy
followed by at least four coats of
SystemThree WR-LPU polyurethane clearcoat
. This has held up well and the boat is used quite often. It is kept outside with a cover, used in salt water.
The deck was built with quarter inch plywood sub deck followed by 3/8 inch strips of mahogany with maple in between. Over the past three years, seams have developed between the Maple and Mahogany and water is starting to enter and lift up the finishing in this area and penetrate the maple. The first picture above is what it looked like initially three years ago and the second picture is what it looks like now. I would like to refinish the deck this year.

Did you know that Glen-L is a movie star? Our
Barrelback is currently being built by Jethro Gibbs on NCIS and our designs have appeared on many other shows. You can read all about it

Until next time, build more boats...Glen-L boats that is!

PULL UP FENDER CLEATS
This unique style of the single post retractable fender cleat is investment cast of 316 stainless steel. This unit is designed with a detent area so that the cleat stays up or down as desired, and does not rattle. The cleat swivels from the base at one discrete point for easy power-tool installation with two screws through the base. These fasteners are "hidden" and the cleat is flush to the base when in retracted position.

GLEN-L POXY GRIP ADHESIVE
This superior waterproof marine glue is formulated specifically for the boatbuilder, whether amateur or professional. POXY-GRIP is easy to use, requiring equal parts of resin and hardener (1:1 ratio). Use on all types of wood, most metals, and some plastics.
POXY-GRIP cures below 40° F (although more slowly), and is suitable for high humidity or on woods with relatively high moisture content since it does not absorb moisture during cure. The resin component is nearly water clear, while the polyamide hardener is amber color. Cured joints are clear, becoming virtually invisible. Ideal for use under clear finishes.
