A talented team of AHEC Scholars are gearing up for the first Idaho Youth Opioid Conference.
The group of Scholars have been invited to visit the Family Health Services in Burley on their way to the conference. This rural Federally Qualified Health Center hosts a fully integrated clinic in rural Idaho. The group will meet with CEO Aaron Houston and his talented providers to learn more about interprofessional practice in small towns. Students will gain first-hand knowledge of rural health concerns and mental health practices in primary care systems.

The North Idaho AHEC Scholars will be joining the SEID Scholars, through support of HRSA funding to tour the Center for Behavioral Health in Boise to learn more about Medication Assisted Therapy. While at the Center Scholars will have the opportunity to speak with front line clinicians about the challenges and benefits of MAT practice and substance use disorders. The clinic provides behavioral health support as well as methadone, suboxone and other therapies.

At the conference the Scholars will present their research on Idaho Good Samaritan Law and implications for Southeast Idaho healthcare professionals. The poster was compiled by a multidisciplinary team and include background information on Nalaxone, public safety and local considerations.
North Idaho AHEC has a New Director

Liz Bryant was recently named the new Director for the North Idaho AHEC. As a long-time resident of North Idaho, Liz is passionate about the healthcare needs of the state, particularly its rural and underserved communities. Before joining the WWAMI team in July 2019, Liz served as the Pre-Health Professions Program Coordinator at the University of Idaho, supporting undergraduate students from a wide range of academic majors; she is honored to have received both regional and national recognition for her commitment to student service.

Prior to that, Liz served more than 10 years as Administrator of an Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF/ID). This experience instilled a strong appreciation for the value of inter-professional collaboration, which she believes starts with a foundation of inter-professional education.

Additionally, Liz has been a volunteer with the Latah County Board of Community Guardians for 12 years, the last six as Chair of the Board. These combined experiences have highlighted some of the many areas of need that residents of North Idaho face, including access to preventive care and mental health services. Please join us in welcoming Liz to the Idaho AHEC family!
