NAPE news
Dear NAPE Members,

I hope this message finds you doing well. I am pleased to welcome our newest NAPE Affiliate Member, Nova Scotia Community College in Nova Scotia, Canada, who joined earlier this month. NAPE is now international!

Happy CTE Month! I would like to provide some updates on our recent work relative to Perkins V planning. This winter we will update several tools that will help states in Perkins V planning. The first is updated state-level data dashboards at the cluster level disaggregated by gender, along with CTE data disaggregated by race and ethnicity. These will be released shortly, and information will be provided on their use. In addition, we will update our NAPE State Fact Sheets in time for Public Policy Day at the Summit. You can locate past Public Policy Fact Sheets on the NAPE website. We have also been working with OCTAE, which plans to begin work on a new Nontraditional Crosswalk for Perkins V this summer. We look forward to working with OCTAE to ensure that this new Crosswalk serves the needs of our members in identifying and addressing equity gaps in programs leading to nontraditional occupations. Please continue to visit our Perkins V webpage for resources, materials, and information that can help with state and local level planning.

We at NAPE HQ are very excited about this year's National Summit for Educational Equity, which will be our 40th convening. As you have seen in recent communications, we have an exciting line-up of speakers and activities, and we are providing incentive to those who return from last year and for groups of four or more. The Early Bird Registration deadline has been extended through next Friday, March 1st, so be sure to register if you have not already! See below for more information and links. There is also room in our hotel block for the conference, so be sure to book your hotel before the block fills!

Please see below for updates and helpful resources, and let us know if there is anything else we can do to serve your needs in ensuring student access, educational equity, and ultimately workforce diversity in high-skill, high-wage, in-demand career pathways through CTE and STEM.

Warmest regards,
Ben
NAPE's Micromessaging Training Improves Academic Outcomes for Students
Schmitz, S., Ebersole, T. E., Morrell, C., & Parker, C. (2018). Measuring the effectiveness of community college faculty learning communities on student performance. Learning Communities Journal, 10, 87-108.

In a journal article published in December, researchers utilizing NAPE's Micromessaging to Reach and Teach Every Student professional development reported positive findings linking student academic outcomes to faculty members' participation in the training. This study builds on the success of earlier research showing improvements in faculty understanding of utilizing instructional strategies to create an inclusive learning environment ( Parker, Morrell, Morrell, & Chang, 2016). Both of these articles are a result of the NSF Advanced Technological Education (ATE)-funded Educator's Equity in STEM Academy (EESTEM), which NAPE administered in Maryland from 2011 to 2016.

In this most recent study, the authors utilized faculty capstone data presented at the end of the EESTEM Academy to determine whether changes occurred for students. The capstones from 27 faculty showed various positive results for students, including increased student performance as measured by course grades, improved course retention, and an increase in student interest or selection of a STEM degree. These extremely positive results bolster the overall efficacy of the Micromessaging training, further illustrating how improved attitudes of teachers are resulting in improved outcomes for students in STEM.
NAPE at Hawai'i ACTE
In mid-January, Ben joined the team at the Hawai'i State CTE Office to provide professional learning during its Hawai'i ACTE Conference. On January 24, he facilitated a preconference workshop titled "Are you ready for Perkins V"? This  workshop engaged key stakeholders from secondary and postsecondary education, workforce development, the community, and business and industry in exploring the levers in Perkins V to address and close equity gaps in CTE in Hawai'i. The stakeholders who participated left energized and ready to engage in the important work of state- and local-level planning.

At the Hawai'I ACTE Conference the following day, Ben provided two back-to-back sessions on Perkins V and ended the day with a Realize Potential with Mindset session that was standing room only!

Ben was excited to work with local- and state-level leaders throughout the week, and he enjoyed working with the Hawai'i State CTE Office team led by Bernadette Howard, State Director, and Barbara White, Associate Director.
