With our Second Annual Surface Mining Emergency Response Training and Competition coming up on Monday, Feb. 25, we want to remind you that it isn't too late to register!

Team, non-competitor, sponsor and vendor registration are all open until the end of today, Feb. 22. If you are still interested in registering, please click below. Event Agenda

Are you already registered for the Second Annual Surface Mining Emergency Response Training and Competition or still thinking about it? Check out the agenda for this year's event!

The event will be held Monday through Thursday, Feb. 25-28, 2019 at the Florida Public Safety Institute, located just northwest of Tallahassee, Florida. Starting Monday and Tuesday a number of free demonstrations will be available on topics of drones, body-worn cameras dealing with traumatic incidents and more. Various eight-hour training sessions - such as rope rescue awareness, water safety and survival and first aid refresher - will be offered for a small fee.

The team competition will begin on Tuesday with a Multiple-Choice Exam, followed by a Field Exercise on Wednesday and a First Aid Practical on Thursday. The competition will come to an end on Thursday with a banquet that will include dinner, a team procession and an awards ceremony!

Free Demonstrations Available Monday and Tuesday

We have the following FREE demonstrations available during next week's Surface Mining Emergency Response Training and Competition for anyone not registered in paid certification classes and workshops. Should you plan to attend, please email Mining Program Manager Karen Miller at [email protected] so that she can add you to roster(s). You are free to come and go through any of the demonstrations!

Rappel Rescue by Jason Moninger, LCSO SWAT Team/Sniper Team Leader (Monday Only) / Feb. 25 from 8 a.m. - noon and 1-5 p.m. / Rappel Tower: Attendees will be shown a rappel demo which will include the use of all necessary rappel equipment, emergency tie-off and self-rescue techniques, and use of the stretcher to lower casualties to safety. Also included will be a brief discussion on knots, tie-backs, and rope uses. One to two other volunteers from SWAT Team to assist which will include other demonstrations.

Onsite Trauma Care for the Mining Industry by Dr. William Brooks, President of Advanced Trauma Specialties, LLC / Feb. 25 from 1-5 p.m., Feb. 26 from 9 a.m. - noon / Classroom Building, Room #112: This lecture will be a compilation of basic and advanced trauma care/bleed control for industrial injuries and active assailant (shooter) scenarios. It is intended to give company first responder teams tools and skills to utilize to minimize loss of limb or life prior to EMS arrival.

Medical Response to Trauma by John Coffman of Armada Ammunition / Feb. 25 from 8 a.m. - noon at DRM-007 and Feb. 26 from 1-4 p.m. at Classroom Building, Room #112: Medical Response to Trauma is a four-phase program designed to test the technical and tactical skills, resiliency and adaptability to unforeseen circumstances in a deadly force encounter. With those attributes and a string skill set in defensive training and emergency medical treatment, students should be able to strive for success and be able to overcome the intricacies of a trauma encounter.

Water Safety and Survival Training Class

We still have openings for our Water Safety and Survival training class, taking place on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 25-26! The registration fee is $50. Instructors include Lt. Eric Hall and Officer Richard Hildbrand of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The training will take place in a HEATED pool. Students will learn and perform different swim strokes, self-rescue techniques, buddy rescue techniques, survival techniques in a water environment, falls from elevation into water environment, breath holding techniques, weapon drills in the water environment, disengagement drills in the water environment, floating drills and many more fun drills.

WHO WE ARE

The Florida Mine Safety Program (FMSP) aims to educate those who partake in mining operations by assisting mining companies and mining contractors with their health and safety training. For more than 30 years, the program has operated as a federally-funded grant program under the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), whose mission is to prevent death, disease and injuries in the mining industry. This is done through a variety of training courses, conferences and informational seminars offered by FMSP. These courses highlight proper emergency evacuation plans, health and safety standards and more. FMSP diligently works to ensure that miners working in both Florida metal and nonmetal operations are aware of the health and safety standards and are effectively trained to take precautionary measures. Through a collaborative effort, FMSP and MSHA Educational Field and Small Mine Services (EFSMS) work together to reduce the frequency and severity of mining accidents and ensure a safe environment for all.
