Greetings,
Hosting author events is an important part of our mission of community enrichment. Our recent event in Manchester with Ocean Vuong reinforced why these events are so important, sometimes even potentially life-changing. He was at the bookstore to discuss his new book
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous
, which is on the
New York Times
bestseller list and a staff favorite. It is groundbreaking in many ways and his presentation was phenomenal--it was one of those evenings that remind us why we are in the book business in the first place. So many rich and poignant topics were covered--the American experiment, race, the opioid epidemic, sexuality, immigration, and what it means to be human. He spoke so clearly and eloquently about the book, his writing, and living in this country in 2019. (If you want to listen to the discussion, it was recorded for
The Book Show
on WAMC and will be posted soon). I highly recommend this book.
Of note this month, we have two other special events that might pique your interest. In Saratoga, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and friend Richard Russo will be coming on the 21st to discuss his new book,
Chances Are…
Tickets are going quickly; you can purchase them

, and its sequel story,
Dog Days in the City
.
The Unlikely Story of a Pig in the City
is a modern retelling of
Charlotte's Web
, exploring the peculiar moments of owning a quickly growing piglet in the city. You'll fall in love with every character, especially Hamlet, the pig. An excellent read to discover the importance of asking for help, and learning to take responsibility for things that are important to you.

Join us when this prize-winning author praised for his "fierce poetic originality" and "uncompromising vision" presents this searing, visionary novel set in war-torn 1970s Beirut, an at once propulsive, elegiac, outrageous, profane, transcendent, and profoundly moving fable on what it means to live through war.

From the National Book Award–winning author of
Stamped from the Beginning
comes a bracingly original approach to understanding and uprooting racism and inequality in our society—and in ourselves.
“The only way to undo racism is to consistently identify and describe it—and then dismantle it.”
Ibram X. Kendi’s concept of antiracism reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America—but even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. In
How to Be an Antiracist,
Kendi asks us to think about what an antiracist society might look like, and how we can play an active role in building it.
In this book, Kendi weaves an electrifying combination of ethics, history, law, and science, bringing it all together with an engaging personal narrative of his own awakening to antiracism.
How to Be an Antiracist
is an essential work for anyone who wants to go beyond an awareness of racism to the next step: contributing to the formation of a truly just and equitable society.

In this brilliant sequel to
The Handmaid's Tale,
acclaimed author Margaret Atwood answers the questions that have tantalized readers for decades.
When the van door slammed on Offred's future at the end of
The Handmaid's Tale
, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her—freedom, prison or death.
With
The Testaments
, the wait is over.
Margaret Atwood's sequel picks up the story fifteen years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead.
"Dear Readers: Everything you've ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we've been living in." —Margaret Atwood

Kathryn Holzman's collection of short fiction explores the truce between Vermont's homesteaders and the second-home owners who co-exist in the lush Green Mountains. Whether sharing a blackberry patch with a bear or dropping off garbage at the local transfer station, life in Vermont unites its disparate residents in surprising ways.
"Holzman presents the stark realities of life in rural Vermont. We see lives held in the balance of simple good or bad luck, intimacy grounded in necessity and poor decisions, all presented against the backdrop of what makes the natural environment both a challenge and, for the few, a reward." —Yvonne Daley,
Going up the Country
"Kathryn Holzman builds her plots on a landscape that's compelling, fertile, and mythic, where lavish peonies and Narcan share space. Dreamy, damaged, or both, her characters do the best they can. At once unsparing and openhearted, authenticity is her strength." —Verandah Porche,
Sudden Eden
