Note from our Executive Director

"Promise me you'll always remember: You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." ~ A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Well the data is in on our 2018 - 2019 school year and we are excited for the results. 94% of our students improved 1 reading level or more and on average 4.45 reading levels. Now many might say, "Well how do you know that students not in your program wouldn't have done just as well?" This is a valid question, especially for our funders, who want to assure that they are investing their highly sought-after monies to their best advantage. We here at SAYL are sensitive to this fact and strive to provide value added results. Read more here >>

Reading Buddy Insider

Updates for Fall 2019

Each summer, as we gear up for the new school year, we review our training materials for new Reading Buddies and make updates and adjustments when necessary. This year we added guidelines for how to respond in the case of a fire or lockdown drill, as well as suggestions for helping students during reading when they misread or get stuck on a word. Below is a summary of those updates via the links below. We hope you enjoy your last few weeks of summer and look forward to getting you started once kids and teachers get settled in for the year!

P.S. - Be on the lookout in the coming weeks for an email from our Volunteer Manager, Kirk Fallin about volunteering for the 2019-2020 school year.

Book Buddies News

A New Chapter for our Book Buddies Team

Over five years ago, SAYL volunteer Jane Welch came to us with a vision to expand our end-of-year book giveaway program. As a Reading Buddy herself, Jane was aware that we gave books to our students at the end of the year to promote summer reading and to help start at-home libraries. She saw the need for all students, whether they had a Reading Buddy or not, to be given books. Starting with her own students' class at Riverside Park Elementary in SAISD, she collected books donated by friends and neighbors, and gave them to all the students in that class at the end of the school year.  Read more here >>

Donor Spotlight

A special thanks to the Valero Energy Foundation for their support of our SAYL Reading Buddy Program through their gift of $10,000. Valero Energy Foundation's ongoing support to the communities in which they live, work and serve through causes that aid, empower, enrich and educate allows San Antonio Youth Literacy the opportunity to continue to deliver our Reading Buddy Program to those children struggling to read on grade level.
