Supporting the vaccination effort, caring for our neighbors

In the race to vaccinate the entire United States population, faith leaders across the country, including ELCA leaders, are leading by example, receiving the vaccine, advocating on behalf of its equitable distribution, and mobilizing their congregations to support vaccination administration.

Faiths4Vaccines is connecting and supporting faith communities in these life-saving efforts.

ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton issues pastoral message on Fulton v. City of Philadelphia

As children of God, we give thanks for all of the LGBTQIA+ people who experience God’s calling to the holy work of parenting. In particular response to the June 17 Supreme Court ruling on Fulton v. City of Philadelphia, the ELCA stands with our LGBTQIA+ siblings in Christ and reaffirms our commitment to equal protection, opportunities and responsibilities under the law (Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust, p. 33).

Children and youth in the child welfare system are among the most vulnerable members of our society, and a disproportionate number of young people in the child welfare system are LGBTQIA+ and in need of compassionate and supportive homes. Our concern as disciples of Christ is for their best interests. This includes recognizing and affirming the vocation of LGBTQIA+ people as parents and foster parents.

Each of us can respond through ongoing education and action in support of LGBTQIA+ people, including those who are called to provide loving care for children, and through compassionate care for our most vulnerable children and youth.
Join LIRS in Calling for Protection for Afghan Allies

Soon President Biden will be deciding if/when we will be evacuating the Afghan Allies of our US military (and their families) out of Afghanistan before the withdrawal in Sept – or leave them to face certain death. These allies and their families soon became the targets of anti-American violence. They continue to be threatened, abducted, targeted, and killed for their allegiance to the U.S. and NATO mission. On this page – www.lirs.org/emergency-evacuation-afghan-allies-action-alert is a summary of the issue. There is a clear advocacy action included. The downloadable toolkit at the bottom of the page is an excellent source of information with talking points, a story, prayers and a longer explanation of ways to get involved.

Synod Office CLOSED
Monday, June 21
In observance of Juneteenth.
We pray: Holy and righteous God, you created us in your image. Grant us grace to contend fearlessly against evil and to make no peace with oppression. Help us, like those of generations before us who resisted the evil of slavery and human bondage in any form and any manner of oppression. Help us to use our freedoms to bring justice among people and nations everywhere, to the glory of your Holy name through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Shaped by the ELCA’s social teaching documents and the experiences of its congregations, ministries, and partners, the ELCA advocates to end world hunger and stand up for policies that create opportunities to overcome poverty, promote peace and dignity, preserve God’s creation and promote racial and gender justice. Expertise from both networks will come together in this presentation and expand our capacity to respond to the challenges of our times. Lutherans Restoring Creation Connections Call

Wednesday, June 23 at 5pm (Pacific)

Focus: Western Science, Indigenous Knowledge, and Christian Faith:
How Can Various Ways of Knowing Find Common Ground?
We will hear from Johanna Bernu, a scientist (who happens to be in 8th grade) and Descendant of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in Minnesota. She will share her experiences of conducting research on the disinfectant properties of water lilies using Ojibwe knowledge alongside euro-centric scientific processes. We will also reflect on the intersection of faith and science as expressed by fellow Lutheran from the The Chippewa Cree Tribe of Rocky Boy in Montana, Loni Taylor. Listen in to her perspective in this piece (click) from our friends at the Lutheran Alliance for Faith, Science and Technology
This topic could be discussed non-stop for weeks, but we will hear from a couple perspectives to start the gears turning and share resources to explore more and keep the conversation going in other circles. We are looking to add resources to this collection and urge you to explore them and thoughtfully integrate the act of repudiating the doctrine of discovery in your Creation Care efforts.

Conversation / considerations for congregations expanding to in person worship

Thursday, July 1 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm on Zoom

The NWWA Synod Staff is planning to host a Zoom collaboration session to share learnings (even missteps) and challenges about moving from digital to in-person worship. To prepare and maximize this time, we are asking that you share with us some of your recent learnings and some current/future challenges via the Google Form that you will receive when you register. From your responses, we will tailor our breakout rooms to best meet the needs. Possible topics might be: What tech requirements are needed for live streaming? How to personalize online worship? Ideas for making in-person worship safer.

Additionally, if you and/or someone in community have experiences that might be beneficial to these conversations, please gotarev@iclould.com as soon as possible. Thank you!

Lay & Rostered Congregation leaders are invited to register in advance for this meeting here:
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
