More Than 60 People Attended Capitol Day Feb. 13
On Feb. 13, 65 family physicians, residents and medical students from all over the state participated in a day of activities highlighting family medicine. MAFP members made personal contacts with more than 75 legislators during the day.

Here's what you missed if you didn't make it to Capitol Day!

Members were equipped with talking points in advance and each attendee received a personalized sheet with the legislators' photo and contact information so they could invite them to come meet with them.

Attendees were given a packet with several personalized buttons they could wear on their coats, including "More Than Medicine, I Chose Family Medicine," "Up to Date - Vaccinate," "Keep the Team" and more.

Attendees met with legislators in the Capitol, took photos and discussed issues important to family physicians.

Attendees were introduced in both the House and Senate galleries.

During a private luncheon, attendees heard from guest speakers including Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, AAFP's Shelby Higgins and MAFP's Ashley Thompson.

Miss Mississippi Mary Margaret Hyer of Hattiesburg attended and spoke to legislators and members about the Tar Wars anti-tobacco program that she discusses at local elementary schools on MAFP's behalf.

Legislators were given a gift and a packet of information that showcased Family Medicine with information on how to reach our advocacy team.

Booths were set up in the rotunda to perform health screenings and educate people about family medicine. Booths included MEA Medical Clinics, MAFP Foundation, Mississippi Rural Physician Scholarship Program, and the Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce.

After the event, MAFP sent a sample press release to each member to submit to their local newspaper.

Mississippi AFP Has Second-Highest Retention Rate Among ALL States; 15% Still Need to Renew Membership
Mississippi AFP just received year-end numbers and are pleased to report active physician retention rate is 97.3% with a national rate of 93.6%. We saw a small increase in our market share which was 85.3.   HELP US KEEP OUR NUMBERS STRONG! Please renew today if you have not yet done so.

Only 87 members still need to pay their dues to renew for 2020. That means more than 85% of MAFP active members have already paid. We mailed reminders to the other 15% this past week.  Renew by  paying online or call AAFP at 1-800-274-2237 to pay by phone today.
Please Donate Today:  $5,000 Needed for Spring Fling
The MAFP Future in Family Medicine Spring Fling is celebrating its 8th anniversary this year and we are planning for the biggest crowd yet. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to help offset overnight accommodations, meals and registration for more than 100 residents and students to attend the event, which is free to all medical students and residents.

We were thrilled to raise $1,800 in one short week during our social media promotion, but we want to continue it through the month of February. Won't you give to the Foundation today?

THCGME Funding Can't Wait, AAFP Tells Congressional Leaders
MAFP signed on with 48 other states to a February 10  AAFP letter to Members of Congress that asked for long-term funding for the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education program (THCGME).

"Your positive action in the next few weeks will create stability in these important programs and avoid any further disruptions caused by lingering uncertainties associated with future program funding," the Academy's latest letter said.

Among the disruptions already looming: the Feb. 26 deadline for medical school resident applicants to submit their rank order lists to the National Resident Matching Program Main Residency Match. Future physicians making a pivotal career decision must now weigh the historic success of the THCGME program against the possibility that centers challenged by short-term funding patches could close.

One education program in our state is paying close attention to this issue. Mississippi's EC HealthNet Family Medicine Residency Program depends on funding from this federal program in order to operate.
