Celebrating the lives of our volunteers and clients

"The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color."

Save the Date...

Feasting with Friends
will be the weekend of
October 12 and 13, 2019.

Feasting with Friends is a community-wide weekend of magnificent lunch and dinner parties to benefit Kitchen Angels. This unique event will bring Santa Feans together to reveal the power of food, friendship, community, and philanthropy.

Anyone can host a lunch or dinner party in their home.  Guests will be asked to make a donation, in any amount, to Kitchen Angels and 100% of the proceeds will benefit our meal delivery program.  To sign up or for more information please click here.

Congratulations to Facundo Garcia for winning the drawing for the week's stay at a cabin for 4 in Pagosa Springs, CO. Tom Lechner was the first name drawn. Tom and his wife Liz generously re-donated the prize.

Facundo has volunteered his time at Kitchen Angels for the past 14 years. It's a well-deserved prize, and we hope he has a great time in Colorado with his friends or family.
Tasty TidbitsTastyTidbits

It's always a treat each year to sample our talented volunteers'  wonderful creations for the dessert contest. For the volunteer appreciation picnic & BBQ, we saw a lot of cobblers, fruit tarts, a delicious cheesecake in a cup, and some of the prettiest winged cupcakes we ever saw. While all of the desserts were delicious, we had a few outstanding entries that rose to the top.

Big thanks to John Lippe who provided us with his recipe for the first-prize winning Coconut Tres Leches Cake Trifle. He says it takes all day to make and consists of many steps.  Let us know if you try it out.

It was thoughtful of Jane Ure to make a Gluten-Free Carrot Cake for those folks who can't have gluten. Turns out the different flour didn't compromise the flavor of this cake. Gluten-free flour has come a long way in the past five years!
Kay Jenkins (Tu & Fr Delivery Coordinator) and her daughter Allison Jenkins (chef at Arroyo Vino) collaborated on the Praline Peach Cobbler . They used Palisade peaches from the stand on Cerrillos Road that's getting lots of press this year. While it was an old recipe with a twist (the spiral rolls topping the cobbler), peach cobbler is a perfect dessert for summer.

Thank you to everyone who brought a dessert.

Joe received more kudos for his BBQ ribs than we could count. They were cooked to perfection inside and out, and fall-off-the-bone tender and juicy.  Many people asked him about how he did it. Once he mentioned that he used the sous-vide  method to cook the meat before hand, people's eye's glazed over.

Joe assures us that the process is easier than trying to get the same results from grilling alone. It just takes a few kitchen gadgets, a little planning, and some time.  Bon Appétit did a nice job of taking the mystery out of the process with their piece called "So, What Is Sous-Vide, Anyway?"

Sous-vide is a method of cooking in which food is placed in a plastic pouch and cooked in a water bath for longer than usual cooking times.  The temperature is much lower than that which
is usually used for cooking.  The intent is to cook the item evenly, ensuring that the inside is properly cooked without overcooking the outside, and to retain moisture.

The article explains how the sous-vide device works, the process of cooking different meats and vegetables, offers some fabulous recipes, and tells you where to purchase small and affordable sous-vide machines.

Kitchen Angels is teaming up with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to bring our volunteers a Brief Introduction to Suicide Prevention, Wednesday, August 7th from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. The class will take place here at Kitchen Angels, and delivery drivers are encouraged to attend. Participants will learn the common risk factors for suicide, how to spot the warning signs in others, and how to keep ourselves, our loved ones and those in our community safe. ReUnity Resources

We hope everyone enjoyed the volunteer appreciation BBQ/picnic at Reunity Farms (the old SF Community Farm on San Ysidro Crossing). For those of you who didn't attend, and those interested in learning more about Reunity, we're happy to oblige.

Reunity Resources was founded in 2011 as a community-supported effort to create closed-loop systems that turn waste into value. It started with the collection of cooking oil from local restaurants that was turned into biodiesel. The organization then placed its focus on a food scraps collection program, turning waste into compost. In 2015, Reunity signed a lease with the Santa Fe Community Farm and in 2018 they re-invigorated the non-arable land and got it up and running again. In the past year they have grown and donated 10,837 pounds of food to local hunger efforts.

We just love our neighboring organization and think they're doing some amazing work. There are quite a few ways to become involved with Reunity.
  • The public can drop in for a tour of the farm on Tuesdays 3-7pm and Saturdays 10am - 3pm.
  • Group volunteer and team-building opportunities are available on Fridays 8am-2pm.
  • Become a member for a nominal donation and you gain access to member events, workshops, first pick at the u-pick field and orchard, and free residential compost drop-off.
  • Purchase compost and mulch: May - Sept. M-F, 8-4, Sat, 9-12 and Oct-Apr, M-F 9-4
  • Visit their produce stand on the farm Jun-Nov: Tu 3-7, Sat 10-3
  • Purchase their produce at the SF Farmer's Market Jun-Nov: Tu 8-1, Sat 8-1
Click here for more information on Reunity Resources. To contact someone about the farm, (505) 490-1047 or contact Trevor about compost (505) 393-1196.

We wish Reunity all the best. Let's help them continue to thrive by showing our support!
Community Connections...   Connections

Kitchen Angels is trying to make connections with various organizations in Santa Fe and what  better way to build these connections than through you, our volunteers. We would like to build relationships with churches and organizations around town. So, in an effort to establish these connections within our community, please let us know if you or anyone you know belongs to any social organizations such as The Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, any women's organizations or social organizations in general.

Please contact Dwayne Trujillo by August 15 th with any connections at [email protected]

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! Thanks

Big hoots and hollers of gratitude to all of the volunteers who joined us for the volunteer appreciation party out at Reunity Farms. We had a big ol' crowd, with enough ribs, beans, and potato salad to go around . . . and then some.

The band, Kitty Jo Creek, was perfect for dancing and our thanks to James Horn and company for playing in the heat. Many thanks to our very own Joe Cates for his exceptional BBQ and sous-vide  skills that produced ribs cooked to perfection! Thanks to Karen Price-Coberly & Will Coberly for chipping in with food prep and service before, during ,and after the party.

We were very impressed with the scrumptious desserts that were entered into the dessert contest. It was a tight race, but a select few rose to the top.  If you'd like to impress your friends by making one of them, check the Tasty Tidbits section above for the prize-winning recipes! Thanks winners, for sharing the goodness!

How to be an exceptional volunteer...

Charlie with his hands full of client bags
In case you were wondering what an outstanding volunteer looks like, look no further than Charlie and  Nina Noel. These two folks started volunteering back in May of this year, and we're so happy that they did! Charlie stands out as a delivery driver when he opens doors and carries bags out for any volunteer needing assistance. He gladly gives up his place in the delivery line to help others. And, he doesn't ask if you need help - he sees what needs to be done, and does it. His kindness is contagious - not only does it make people happy, but it makes everyone want to reach out and help others.

Charlie's wife Nina is just as amazing. She is right
Nina putting meals in the FWEs
there
with Charlie assisting  other drivers on Friday and making people's heart melt with her winning smile. Nina started helping out in the kitchen on Wednesday afternoons just in time. We had a lot of people call out one week, and she was one of five volunteers who got busy and "smashed it out" as chef Joe says. Nina gets along with everyone, learns quickly, takes responsibility, and isn't afraid to ask questions to make certain she'd doing things correctly.
Kindness is often overlooked, but it goes really far in making Kitchen Angels a warm and inviting place to volunteer. Together we're serving our homebound clients, but we're also serving our fellow volunteers. Many thanks to all of the volunteers, staff, and board members who share a kind word, gesture, hug, or sympathetic ear. We're making the world a nicer place to live.
