XSEDE Service Providers awarded new machines
Two Level 1 XSEDE service provider institutions, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and the San Diego Supercomputer Center, have recently been awarded new $10 million NSF machines. Once deployed, both machines will be part of the XSEDE ecosystem.

PSC, in partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), will deploy Bridges-2, a system designed to provide researchers with massive computational capacity and the flexibility to adapt to the rapidly evolving field of data- and computation-intensive research. Read more >>

SDSC, in collaboration with Dell, Intel, NVIDIA, Mellanox, and Aeon, will deploy  Expanse , a new supercomputer designed to advance research that is increasingly dependent upon heterogeneous and distributed resources.
XSEDE releases new online training tutorial
XSEDE has recently added a new online training tutorial, Publishing Jetstream Virtual Machines. This topic covers the necessary steps for publishing a Jetstream VM image to make it permanently available to the scientific community. A published VM image can be referenced in scholarly works by means of a unique Digit Object Identifier (DOI).

XCI Updates
The XSEDE Cyberinfrastructure Integration (XCI) team staff recently worked with George Mason University IT staff to conduct cluster build training on local hardware with the  XCBC OpenHPC toolkit . Sixteen staff from George Mason attended and worked with the team over two days, building a trio of test clusters for training, software install, and monitoring/benchmarking.

Have you ever thought, "I really wish I could _____ when using this system?" The XCI team has released a new feature to the Research Software Portal (RSP) to share a “user story” with XSEDE. The " Describe a User Story " page on the portal (part of the  Community Needs  section) lets you enter a brief statement describing something you'd like to be able to do when using research computing services. The idea could be about XSEDE, the RSP, your personal research process, or research computing in general.

The XCI team has also updated the  XSEDE Globus ID Explorer service  to the latest version, which has a new, friendlier user interface and more explanations about the data displays. XSEDE Globus ID Explorer is a web-based diagnostic tool for viewing the identity data returned by Globus Auth, XSEDE's Web Single-Sign-On (SSO) service. Visitors to the site will see the identity data provided to XSEDE web applications that use Globus Auth for login. These XSEDE applications include: XSEDE User Portal (XUP), the Jetstream system, XSEDE Courses online training, and the Research Software Portal. In addition to displaying identity data, XSEDE Globus ID Explorer also explains the data and how to correct inaccurate data.

Finally, the XCI team would like your input on a  SSH needs survey.  Remote terminal login using telnet or the more secure SSH have been widely used for over 30 years. The web is enabling science gateways, web portals, and tools like JupyterHub, CyVerse, and OnDemand, to offer a more user friendly and modern way to access remote resources. Due to changes in vendor support for XSEDE's GSI OpenSSH software and the growing availability of newer technologies, XSEDE is looking for broad input from users, developers, and cyberinfrastructure support staff of campus and national computing services. This survey will be open through September 30, 2019, and the results will be summarized, anonymized, and shared publicly this winter.

The mission of the XSEDE Cyberinfrastructure Integration (XCI) team is to enable users to leverage national CI using advanced software and services. We look forward to your input.
Community Announcements & Events
HPC Leadership Institute at TACC
The High Performance Computing (HPC) Leadership Institute, which will be held at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) September 17-19, 2019, is tailored to managers and decision makers who are using, or considering using, HPC within their organizations. It is also applicable to those with a real opportunity to make this career step in the near future. Topics covered will include procurement considerations, pricing and capital expenditures, operating expenditures, and cost/benefit analysis of adding HPC to a company's or institution's R&D portfolio. A broad scope of HPC is covered from department scale clusters to the largest supercomputers, modeling, simulation to non-traditional use cases, and more. We encourage attendees from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented communities.

Registration will close on September 3.
