Canadian Dressage GOLD

 Beat the Heat
Nova Scotia has had almost tropically warm weather this summer. With extreme heat must come precautions with regards to equine welfare. The above heat stress chart from the U.S. National Weather Service indicates when heat makes human exercise unsafe. According to Practical Horseman magazine, these levels are similar to those of horses. According to Practical Horseman, some signs of equine heat stress can be:

  • rapid breath (faster than 60 breaths per minute with nostrils flared)
  • respiratory rate higher than his heart rate
  • acting lethargic and weak
