Volume 8, Issue 7 | July 2019

 Inside This Issue:

As the month of July wraps up, we are finally experiencing monsoon weather, a bit late if you ask me. With it, this morning's temperature was a "low" 77 degrees! I'm thrilled -- with the rain... the overcast skies... it feels cozy. Of course, I have to be honest that if I don't see the sun for a few days, I will start getting antsy and no longer be such a happy camper!

But, in fact, I've been delighted more and more these days as the spark within has been growing stronger. I have such a great amount of gratitude for this change. And, I know that gratitude itself fuels the spark, so it's a nice upward spiral. At times during this month, I've actually felt like a kid during summer break: noticing the smell of the grass during my morning walk, spending an afternoon in the pool with friends, reading a "summer" book... I know it's not about the physical environment so much as it is an attitude and practice of being in the present moment, The Now.

Speaking of summer break, even though I left the Big Apple for the Southwest close to 23 years ago, I still have not gotten accustomed to school starting up late July/early August -- the summer is only halfway through! And since that is truly the case for me, I've made plans to be in Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco, Mexico) with dear friends in mid-August. It's the first time during the summer I'll be there and will actually be able to swim and snorkel; renting a condo right on the beach is the icing on the cake!

In the meanwhile, I'm running a special package price on computer lessons. If you're tired of asking your spouse, child, and even grandchild (!) for computer help, contact me about hands-on training either in-person in the Phoenix or Sedona area of Arizona, or working via Zoom, Skype, or phone.

We Impact Others

A man at a Hindu ashram came to Swami Muktananda and complained, "You must get rid of my roommate! He is a smoker, and his foul smoke is polluting the atmosphere in my room. Someone as vile as he should not be allowed here!"

Muktananda thought for a moment and responded, "I will change your room - for his sake, not yours. Polluting the physical atmosphere with smoke is an offense, but polluting the psychic atmosphere with judgment is worse. You are hurting yourself and the universe more with your anger and judgment than he is with his smoke."

Namasté

If you've ever attended a yoga class, you've heard the Sanskrit word namasté (nah-mah-stay) when it the session was over. But do you know what it means?

At the base level, namasté is a salutation of respect and reverence. A traditional Indian greeting, it literally translates to "I bow to you" ( namah or namas, meaning "bow," te meaning "you").

There are numerous meanings and translations, but one of the most common translations is "The divine light in me bows to the divine light within you."
Namasté represents the idea that all are one. It affirms that beneath the outer trappings that make us appear different from others, we are made of the same stuff. We are more the same than we are different.

To learn more about the meaning of namasté, how to perform the namasté greeting, etc., read this article on The Chopra Center website.

How the Movie Toy Story 4 Led to a Storm of Toy Donations

Close to 25 years have passed since the original Toy Story movie hit theaters around the world and enchanted millions of children everywhere.

The children from back then have since grown up and many now have children of their own with whom they can share one of the greatest children's movie series ever.

24 years after the release of the original movie, Toy Story 4 came to cinemas around the world in June 2019, and Disney Studios thought of something special.

Disney Israel, the Israeli division of The Walt Disney Company, had the idea of collecting toys from kids who don't need them anymore and giving them to children that do.

How to Never Miss an Email Subscriber Again

You never want to miss a chance to collect email addresses and gain subscribers. But don't let poor penmanship stand in the way of them actually receiving your newsletter! Instead of you or the contact writing out their email and illegible handwriting resulting in undeliverable emails, you can gather contacts that don't require pen and paper. Here's a brief overview of some of the ways to store and manage your contacts. To get more details, read this blog post about increasing email subscribers.

iCapture for iPad and iCapture for Android
iCapture does NOT require an internet connection and it's very easy to use. Simply ask someone to type in their first name, last name, and email address -- and, voilá, that's it!

Social Media: Not the Whole Enchilada

In last month's newsletter, I talked about whether or not you really needed a website, citing only three folks I'd encountered who truly didn't need a website to promote their business. I did not utter a word about social media. Okay, so let's talk about that now.

There are folks who believe having a Facebook page -- and even posting on it regularly -- is an all-encompassing online marketing strategy for promoting their business. While Facebook and other social media can surely be helpful, here are some reasons why they're not the whole enchilada.

  • Having a website helps your business rank better in the search results. While there are many factors that help with ranking, you have more opportunities to compete by having your own website.
  • You don't own the space or contacts on social media sites. If, one day, Facebook, for instance, goes out of business or crashes, you'll lose all of those connections.
  • You are tied to the direction that your social media platform chooses to go. You'll be highly affected by the ever-changing algorithms that limit your exposure.
  • Having your own website allows you to better control the impressions you'll be making. Facebook has a certain feel and attracts a certain audience, LinkedIn another, Pinterest yet another. Which brings us to another matter...
  • Believe it or not, there are still many people who do not or will not patronize social media sites. You are missing out on those potential customers.
Don't rely solely on a social media platform(s) to fit the needs that a website will accomplish. You can use them both to get the most out of your online marketing efforts.

Contact me if you'd like to discuss further your need for a website.

If the little ones have gone back to school, enjoy some more free time for yourself.

If they're still on summer break, have fun together and be safe.

And, if you've no kiddies in your life, then get in touch with your inner child and play!
