St. Sarkis Marks Another Successful Celebration of its Namesake
Reported by Ms. Anahid Ugurlayan, Esq.

On Sunday, February 17, St. Sarkis marked another memorable celebration of its name day.  This year's Master of Ceremonies, Dr. Hagop Gorgissian, did a masterful job in organizing a program that was inspirational, educational and showcased the diverse talent of our youth.  Dr. Gorgissian started the program by presenting short stories which taught valuable life lessons -- the importance of kindness, forgiveness and faith.  He then gave presentations on two of our greatest literary figures -- Hovhannes Toumanyan and Silva Gaboudikian.  2019 marks the 150th anniversary of Toumanyan's birth and the 100th anniversary of Gaboudikian's birth.  Hearing excerpts of their works revived beautiful memories for our parishioners while also inspiring those hearing them for the first time to learn more.

After a brief interlude, students from the Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School (Aris Givelekian, Alex Demirdjan, Hovsep & Laurie Terterian, Anna-Marie Megerian,  and Ani Boudakian accompanied by her father Nareg Boudakian)  showcased their talent under the direction of Haigouhi Megerian and Zepiur Ardzivian. It was a delight to see and hear such a dedicated and talented group of children ranging from toddler to teenagers.

Following the musical program and conclusion of the lunch, Srpazan Anoushavan and Der Nareg presented the Eastern Prelacy's Certificate of Merit to the following recipients for their ongoing service and dedication to St. Sarkis Church: Raffi Nenejian and Nyrie Bedrossian (co-chairs of the Salt & Light Youth Group -- accepting on Nyrie Bedrossian's behalf was her mother, Elsie Halajian), Makrouhi Kalayjian (for her service to the choir and support of the St. Sarkis summer camp and prior service to St. Illuminator's Armenian Cathedral), and Annette Givelekian (for her service to the Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School).  Srpazan Anoushavan thanked them for their service and encouraged those in attendance -- especially the youth -- to redouble their efforts to ensure that St. Sarkis continues to thrive for generations to come.

Many thanks to the organizers of the luncheon -- Alina Kochoumian, Nayda Voskerijian, Haigouhi Megerian, Zepiur Ardzivian and Yn. Annie Terterian -- for a superb job, as well as Dr. Hagop Gorgissian, Haigouhi Megerian, Aris Givelekian, Alex Demirdjan, Hovsep & Laurie Terterian, Anna-Marie Megerian,   , Ani & Nareg Boudakian.  But most of all, thanks to Srpazan Anoushavan, who celebrated his first St. Sarkis celebration at the church he led for so many years and under whose leadership all Prelacy churches will surely thrive, and to Der Nareg who whose leadership has and will ensure the growth and prosperity of St. Sarkis Church.
Salt & Light Youth Group and AYF NY Hyortik Chapter MidWinter Sleepover
Reported by Mrs. Nyrie Bedrossian
Salt & Light Youth Group and the AYF New York Hyortik Junior chapter held a joint MidWinter Sleepover event last weekend at St. Sarkis Church. Being that it was the first time an event like this has been held at St Sarkis Church, there was a lot of interest and over 50 youth registered and attended the sleepover. The agenda for the weekend was put together by Der Nareg, Yeretsgin Annie, and leaders from both AYF and Salt & Light Youth Group. Everyone worked diligently together to provide our kids with a balance of both religious and cultural education, as well as time for singing, dancing, laughing and wonderful homemade meals throughout the weekend.

With over 50 kids attending, along with the 15 adults that were supervising, it is easy to say that halls of St. Sarkis were filled with joy, laughter and a lot of noise last Friday and Saturday. But there was much more than that present ... There was a sea of red, blue and orange everywhere you turned, the colors of our Armenian flag present in banners, lanterns and even the shirts that were worn by the adult supervisors. There was the beautiful voices of our kids singing patriotic songs being taught by our group leaders, followed by their voices learning prayers from Saint Nerses Shnorhali at a late night service that Der Nareg held especially for them in church Friday evening before lights out. There was the sound of our kids calling out ancient Armenian city names as they called their groups to come together, groups that were named after cities in Cilicia; "Marash", "Zeytun", "Sis" and "Adana". We heard their little voices moaning and groaning as they woke up to the sounds of Armenian music blasting from the speakers, only to be followed not much later by them asking for us to blast Armenian music so that they could dance Shoorch Bar and Tamzara. There was also the wonderful smells of homemade food, made lovingly by our group leaders, community members and parents... pancakes, eggs, waffles and traditional mamounieh for breakfast; delicious chicken kebab, salad and pilaf for lunch. There were squeals of laughter, friendly horseplay, giggles and hugs all throughout the hallways as the kids and adults bonded together during this time spent at our "MidWinter Sleepover".

The sights, sounds and smells of the weekend were not all that was present during this amazing event. The youth were also provided with a well orchestrated series of presentations and lectures, starting with a heartfelt introduction Friday evening by Der Nareg about "Identity and Purpose". Through his creative storytelling, Der Nareg reminded the kids about their deep rooted Armenian heritage, and the importance of their role in carrying their culture, language and religion through to future generations. We were also fortunate to have members from the church and AYF community volunteer their time to come speak to the kids about various topics. Mr. Mardig Cholakian introduced a ingenious app called VLUME, which offers a huge selection of Armenian books converted to audio books for anyone that wants to listen to and/or read along to them in Armenian. Yeretsgin Maggie Kouyoumdjian spoke to the group on the topic of "Do No Harm", which taught the kids the basics of being kind, respecting others, and avoiding gossip. Unger Pete Jelalian and Ungerouhi Meghri DerVartanian from the AYF community came and spoke to the kids about Camp Haiastan and AYF Junior Seminar. They had wonderful videos to show, during which many kids in the audience were excited to see familiar faces and asked lots of questions about camp experiences.

To make the weekend even more memorable, the kids were blessed by a surprise visit from His Emminence, Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian on Saturday morning. Our Prelate spoke to the kids about the meaning of the St. Sarkis name day and the Armenian traditions around honoring our Saints with name day celebrations. He also encouraged the kids to ask him any questions they may have about the church, or his role in leading our church, which led to an interactive question and answer session. It was an unexpected visit that added a wonderful element of depth to our entire weekend.

When the time came for the weekend to come to an end, judging by the smiling faces, tired eyes and heartfelt hugs among kids and adults alike, I think it is safe to say that our Salt & Light and AYF leaders had fulfilled their goals of providing the youth with a healthy dose of culture, religion, identity and purpose. We look forward to providing more of these events in the future.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO TITUS (1:1-11)

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God's elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness- a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, and at his
appointed season he brought his word to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,
To Titus, my true son in our common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
The reason I left you in Crete was that you might straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless-not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach and that for the sake of dishonest gain.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (7:37-52)
On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

On hearing his words, some of the people said, "Surely this man is the Prophet." Others said, "He is the Christ." Still others asked, "How can the Christ come from Galilee? Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David's family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?" Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him in?"
"No one ever spoke the way this man does," the guards declared.
"You mean he has deceived you also?" the Pharisees retorted. "Has any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law-there is a curse on them.

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
ST. SAHAG BARTEV
This Saturday, February 23, the Armenian Church commemorates Catholicos Sahag (Isaac) Bartev, a strong and great leader who is recognized as one of the greatest saints of the Armenian Church. His accomplishments, even under very difficult political situations, secured the survival of the Armenian nation.

He was the son of St. Nerses the Great and a descendant of St. Gregory the Illuminator. Orphaned at an early age, he nevertheless received an excellent literary education, especially in eastern languages. He was the one who encouraged and supported Mesrob Mashdots in the creation of the Armenian alphabet. Soon after this great event Catholicos Sahag began the first translation of the Bible and he led and guided the vast body of works that were translated into Armenian, thus creating Armenia's "Golden Age of Literature." He was an ardent believer in education and ecclesiastical discipline and canon law. He is recognized as the one who kept Armenia ecclesiastically and nationally autonomous.

St. Sahag is believed to have died in 437 at an advanced age of 89 (some sources claim older). With the death of Catholicos Sahag Bartev the line of St. Gregory the Illuminator came to an end.

STS. GHEVONT AND PRIESTS
This Tuesday, February 26, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Holy Ghevontian (Leontine) priests. After the battle of Vartanantz, a number of priests and deacons were abducted by the Persian king and imprisoned, tortured and martyred. Ghevont is revered as the leader of the group because he was an advisor to Vartan Mamigonian, and is remembered for the inspiring message he delivered on the eve of the battle of Avarayr. Ghevont, who was highly educated, assisted Sahag and Mesrob in translating the Bible into Armenian.

The Ghevontian Fathers, martyred in 454 are: Catholicos Hovsep; Bishops Sahag and Tatig; Priests Ghevont, Moushegh, Arshen, Manuel, Abraham, and Khoren; Deacons Kachach and Abraham.
