July Zone 10 Update
Though summer usually is a time of vacation and relaxation, not so for riders! This summer is jam-packed with championships, clinics, and horse shows. Our Zone 10 riders are getting their chance to shine in all disciplines across all levels. Up and coming riders improved their horsemanship at Emerging Athlete Program (EAP) Regional Training Sessions, and Junior Hunters shone in the West Coast USEF Junior Hunter National Championships. Pony riders are preparing for the USEF Pony Finals, jumpers are looking forward to qualifying for the USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships, and many riders are working toward the Zone 10 Stirrup Cup or Horse of the Year Championships. These are just a few of the exciting events in our zone and we hope all of our riders take advantage of these great opportunities!

USEF Junior Hunter National Championships and USHJA Hunterdon Classic – West
Many of the best junior riders in the west headed to Sonoma Horse Park on July 22-23 to compete in the USEF Junior Hunter National Championships and the USHJA Hunterdon Equitation Cup Classic. The USEF Junior Hunter Championship tested riders in three phases – Under Saddle, Classic Round, and Handy Hunter Round – focusing on the traditional hunter ride. Meanwhile the USHJA Hunterdon Cup Equitation Classic combined the precision of equitation with the handiness of hunters. The competition consisted of a Classic Hunter Round, a Handy Hunter Round, and a Final Round, in which the top four riders had to switch horses and jump a shortened course.

Congratulations to Violet Lindemann-Barnett (Archie Cox, trainer) and her Cantoblaco for their win in the USHJA Hunterdon Equitation Cup Classic! The scores between the final four riders were quite close, but Violet edged out the competition with her consistency and a smoothly executed final round on Stella Buckingham’s mount Calvatos Z (Lindenwood Farm, owner). Stella (Katie Gardner, trainer) came in second with Emily Williams (Archie Cox, trainer) and her Beach Boy earning third, and Breanna Bunevacz (Tasha Visokay, trainer) and her Vondel DH Z coming in fourth. The USEF Junior Hunter National Championship gave Junior Hunter riders and their horses a chance to shine in the ring against high caliber competition. There were many pairs that proved themselves as champions. Congratulations to all of the winners!

Congratulations to our HQC Stable Challenge Winner
Congratulations to Sandrine Seifert and Hansen Dam Riding School, winners of the 2019 Horsemanship Quiz Stable Challenge in Zone 10.

The Stable Challenge is designed to engage a trainer's entire barn as a team. At least three students per trainer had to complete the USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge Practice Quiz between June 15 and July 15.

Each of the high scoring trainers will be receiving a USHJA backpack with a brush, hoofpick, and TCP manual; a helmet from Charles Owen; a one-year membership to Equestriancoach.com; a $200 Parlanti gift certificate; a grooming bucket with supplies from Shapley's; a $100 FITS Breeches gift card and a $100 gift card from State Line Tack.

Though the Stable Challenge is over, you still have time to sign up for this year’s HQC! Last year it was Zone 10 rider Toni Anderson who earned the HQC Gold Medal. Will it be another Zone 10 rider this year? Good luck and stay tuned to find out!

The SNHSA show season kicked off on May 18 at Brownlee Equestrian with over 50 horses attending, and has continued strong with close to 100 horses competing at the 8th annual Meadow View Farms Charity Horse Show benefitting the Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) on June 28 - 30, 2019. The show was started by the Mullins Family after one of their young riders was diagnosed with cancer, as their way to give back to the community that they have been a part of for over 40 years.

The inaugural show, in 2012, put together with the help of some of their clients, was a one day show that raised $10,000. Now, 8 years later, they have the support of the larger community; now a three-day format, the show has raised over $300,000 for the local charity. With classes from Walk Trot to 1.20m Jumpers, and a Jumper Team Relay, Jumper Derby, and Hunter Derby, there is something for everyone, exhibitors and spectators alike.

Getting to Know EAP Clinician Cynthia Hankins

Cynthia Hankins, one of this summer’s clinicians at the Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund/USHJA Emerging Athletes Program Regional Training Sessions, is widely recognized for winning the AHSA Medal finals in 1977 and for her national and international success with jumpers. Did you know that Cynthia’s winning record in the show ring started at a much earlier age? Cynthia took top prize in Leadline at Devon two times, at ages three and four. Her first Medal class win came at age 12 on a 13.2 1/2 hand pony, and she qualified for the Medal and ASPCA Maclay finals that year, finishing fifth in the Maclay. Cynthia’s story was featured in ”Equitation: A Foundation for Life” at the USHJA Wheeler Museum.
