Radio & TV Details: MAB Coverage of Michigan State of State February 5
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has announced that her first State of the State Address will be Tuesday, February 5 at 7 p.m. from the House Chamber of the Michigan Capitol. The MAB will offer a pool feed of the address, with feeds for both TV and radio.   Read More

Pirate Act Reintroduced
According to a report in Radio Ink, Congressmen Paul Tonko (D-NY) and Guss Bilirakis (R-FL) reintroduced the Pirate Act legislation this Congress. The  bill increases penalties for anyone caught engaging in unlawful radio broadcasting.  Read More

Benson to Ask for AG Opinion on Petition Signature Changes
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson will ask Attorney General Dana Nessel to issue an opinion on the constitutionality of a new law that changed the rules on how organizations must gather petition signatures for proposed constitutional amendments and initiatives.   Read More

Lawmaker Introduced Lottery Winner Anonymity Bill
Legislation that would allow Michigan winners of multi-state lottery games to remain anonymous was introduced last week. Read More

Michigan Broadcaster Tony Flynn Passes
The MAB has learned that broadcast legend, Anthony F. "Tony" Flynn, 92, of Hillsdale passed away on January 21. Flynn is best known for owning and operating WCSR-AM/FM in Hillsdale.

WDIV-TV, the Graham Media Group owned NBC affiliate in Detroit, has promoted Ro Coppola to the role of Director of Digital and Enterprise Content. Also promoted is Jennifer Wallace to the role of Assistant News Director.  Read More

Lansing's Deb Hart Leaves Radio for New Challenges
After 36 years in radio, longtime Lansing radio personality Deb Hart has decided to leave the business to pursue her love of teaching yoga full-time, along with writing books, fiction, non-fiction and even poetry.   Read More

Cumulus Launches "The Q 94.5" in Grand Rapids
Cumulus Media launched a new Triple A music station "The Q 94.5" to West Michigan radio listeners on January 19, as part of a shift in frequencies that began earlier in the month, when WBBL-FM began simulcasting "Thunder 94.5" and the former all-sports format of WBBL moved to the AM dial. Lora Painter Joins WWMT
WILX-TV (Lansing) morning anchor Lora Painter has announced that she is joining WWMT-TV (Kalamazoo), where she will anchor evenings. Painter's last day at WILX was January 11. Painter has a Master's degree from New York University in Broadcast News & Documentary.  Read More

WKAR & WGVU Win 2018 NETA Awards
Public media's achievements in instructional media, community engagement, promotion and general audience content were honored this past Monday night, January 21 in Salt Lake City at the National Educational Telecommunications Assocation (NETA) Awards presentation.  Two Michigan public television stations were recipients of awards. Grant A. Santimore: 1944-2019
The MAB is sad to report the passing of former Michigan Broadcaster Grant A. Santimore, who passed away January 13 at the age of 74. Santimore's career in broadcasting began in the early 70's as Sales Manager, then General Manger of WFMK-FM (Lansing), when it was owned by Bob Liggett. Read More

Pat Moody Steps Down From WSJM Morning Show
After 46 years on the air at News/Talk 94.9 WSJM-FM (St. Joseph), Pat Moody is stepping away from the morning microphone on March 1.  While he will no longer host the morning show, Moody will still be heard on WSJM. His popular
MoodyOnTheMarket.com will continue. Created by Pat in 2013, the business news web site has 5.923 million page views and counting. 
Matt Shepard New Tigers Play-By-Play Voice
Longtime Detroit radio host Matt Shepard is the new voice of the Detroit Tigers. Shepard, who has filled in in past years on broadcasts for the Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons, will take over for Mario Impemba starting this season on Fox Sports Detroit. Read More

WXYZ/WMYD Raises $18K For Metro Detroit Kids
Scripps Media (Detroit) celebrated National Reading Day on January 23 by presenting a check to the United Way of Southeastern Michigan for $18,768 to provide age-appropriate books for children.  The money provided more than 7,500 books that will be used at United Way's family facilities. Read More

Make sure to check out the website to view or listen to the first place clips, they're all fantastic and prove that the future of Michigan broadcasting is very bright!

The 2019 program marked a record year for student award entries. Overall, the MABF received 802 entries from 42 different high schools and colleges throughout Michigan (another record!), and 12 of those schools were new from last year! 

THANK YOU so much to our wonderful student award judges who worked hard to view and listen to all of the entries on a tight timeline, we appreciate their hard work and support.
