Letter from the Editor
Today's forecast? Cloudy with a chance of showers. Plus it's cold for Southern California. Who would have thunk we'd receive so much rain just in this month alone? Let our yards, hills, and mountainsides rejoice in a deep gulp of h2o and let's all chill out on the roads and drive safely. Also, let's remind ourselves our weather still beats the rest of the country right now...maybe except Hawaii. We have two great events coming up in the next few weeks that we need to get to! Remember to register for our joint venture with the OC-APA for our Color of Law workshop at La Sierra University on February 28th. And our next YPG event of the year, Speed Planning, will be at the Eastvale City Council Chambers (the old Styles for Less suite right next to City Hall) on March 7th. Back to back sessions - both very informative and something you shouldn't miss!

EVENTS
Joint IES-APA and OC-APA Feb Workshop - Feb 28
OVERVIEW
Join local planners and policy makers for a conversation with Richard Rothstein, a leading authority on housing policy, who explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

Discuss with your colleagues how this history played out in our local areas, and consider how we, as professional planners, will address the legacy of this history in light of the housing affordability crisis, gentrification, the 2018 passage of Assembly Bill 686 Housing Discrimination: Affirmatively Further Fair Housing, and the upcoming release of the American Planning Association Policy Guide on Social Equity and Inclusive Growth.

TIPS
  • Please arrive by 11:00AM - the discussion will begin promptly at 11:30AM.
  • Pre-ordered books will be available for pick up at the event.
  • Choose the "+ Book" option with your registration below to pre-order The Color of Law for $20. Your paperback copy will be waiting for you at the event check-in table.
