Rector's Ramblings

The last time I lost something on Jekyll Island it was a harrowing experience. I wrote about it in detail, a story that remains one of the most widely read Rector's Ramblings I've ever written. On that occasion, it was Scarlette, my German Shepherd, who got loose and ran away from fireworks. After many hours of searching, I did locate her, injured, but largely ok. It was a happy ending. This time, I wasn't so sure of the happy ending. I suppose it is the whole "2020 thing," I've noted before.  Even I can be a bit fatalistic about "one more thing" this year.

This time it was my wallet. We went over the Jekyll for the afternoon to have lunch, ride bikes, and sit on the beach. At some point, I dropped my wallet. I knew the last place I had used it (to give the girls some spending money), and I knew all the places it wasn't. I called the restaurant near where the car was parked, in case someone had turned it in. Donna called the Island Authority, too. No one had turned it in. There have been times in the past where I have mislaid my wallet at home, but I don't believe I've ever lost it entirely. It was a bit nerve wracking.

Worship

Worship This Week

Please join us on Sunday, at 9:15 am, for online Holy Eucharist, which will be available on the Christ Church Facebook page here, on our YouTube page here, or the Christ Church website here.
Outdoor In-Person Worship

Christ Church is now offering in-person, outdoor worship on Sundays, at 8:00 am. The service is Holy Eucharist, Rite I. Communion will be distributed, bread only.

All worshippers must register in order to attend outdoor services. We are required to keep attendance below 50 persons in accordance with Diocese of Georgia guidelines. To register, call the office (912-638-8683) Tuesday-Thursday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, or on Fridays, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. You must speak with a staff member or volunteer in order to be registered. Registrations will start over each week on Tuesday for the following Sunday; we will not be registering anyone beyond the current, upcoming Sunday. You will need to call the church each week you intend to attend worship.

Please dress casually and comfortably for the weather. Those at high risk for severe symptoms are still encouraged to stay home and worship virtually.

All who attend worship will be screened before participating. We will make sure you don't have any COVID-19 symptoms, haven't been recently exposed, or haven't been recently tested. If you have any common COVID symptoms, we ask that you do not attend in-person worship. Such symptoms may include:

*  Fever or chills
*  Cough
*  Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
*  Fatigue
*  Muscle or body aches
*  Headache
*  New loss of taste or smell
*  Sore throat
*  Congestion or runny nose
*  Nausea or vomiting
*  Diarrhea

* All who attend will be required to wear masks.
* All who attend are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, however, we will have metal folding chairs on hand for those without.
* We will spray for bugs each week, but we encourage you to bring bug spray.
* We will provide hand fans to all who attend (the fans are yours to keep and reuse - we will not collect them).
* Please know that restrooms are only available for emergency use.
Celebrate Communion with Us Via Drive-Through Every Sunday Until 11:15 am
Join us for Drive-Through Communion at Christ Church each Sunday, following the live stream of the Eucharist. There is no need to make a reservation. Cars will enter at the gate next to the mailbox on Frederica Road and drive down the path. Car windows should remain closed until directed to be lowered by the clergy. A member of the clergy will administer the Eucharist, after which parishioners will drive to the back gate, to exit onto Stevens Road.

 Communion will be served until 11:15 am each Sunday.
All Saints Sunday
All Saints Day will be celebrated on Sunday, November 1, 2020 this year. This is a time of reflection and celebration, as we remember those who have died. We will be collecting their names for the All Saints Book of Remembrance.

If you would like to have the name of someone who has died since last year's All Saints Day services, or the name of a loved one who died prior to last year, read during the November 1 service, please email us at [email protected] with the name of the person you wish to honor. Please have the names in by Friday, October 23, 2020.
All Saints/All Souls Prayer Walk

On the evening of Sunday November 1, All Saint's Day, Christ Church is offering an All Saints/All Soul's Prayer Walk through the cemetery after sundown. There will be five stations at which reflections and prayers will be offered, including prayers for our loved ones who have died. The walk will travel one way along the cemetery road, directed by volunteers, stopping briefly at the five stations. Small groups will move together through the stations, masked and distanced. Each station will also have a musical component.

The cemetery and church yard will be decorated with candles on graves. We invite those with loved ones to decorate the grave(s) of their loved ones that afternoon, particularly with candles. Volunteers will go through the cemetery at dusk to light the candles. Whatever is put on the graves on Sunday should be removed on Monday.

To help keep numbers appropriately managed for pandemic related reasons, there will be a registration process to sign up for a time slot. The first time slot will be 6:00 pm, just after sunset. The final time slot will be shortly after 7:00 pm. The walk will take approximately 30 minutes with the stops. Please call the church office at 912-638-8683 to make your reservation.

Mark your calendars now if you'd like to participate by decorating a grave or by taking the walk. There will be a rain date should the weather be inclement.
Bishop's Visit 2020
We were happy to welcome our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Frank Logue to Christ Church this past Sunday, October 11, 2020. Bishop Frank presided and preached at the 9:15 am worship service, then joined the clergy to help administer Holy Eucharist during weekly Drive-Through Communion. (Bishop Frank even guest-starred in this week's "Wait for It" video!) Click here to see photos from the morning.
Blessing of the Animals 2020
The first Christ Church Drive-Through Blessing of the Animals on October 4 was a big hit with our animal friends and their families! If you haven't seen the pictures of our smiling furry friends (and the bees) yet, you can see them here.
Evening Prayer

If you enjoy hearing Evening Prayer read, please look for it at 5:00 pm on the Christ Church Facebook page here. The Rite I bulletin for evening prayer can be found here. The Rite II bulletin for evening prayer can be found here.

Worship Music - A Message from Miss Kathleen
This Sunday you will hear the first offering by our
Joyful Noise Ensemble Project. The Tuesday Handbell Ensemble will off an arrangement of Balm in Gilead arranged by Sandra Eithun for Handbells and Piano for the Offertory Anthem. This group consists of Cathy Foster, Tami Black, Ann Graham, Christine Plank, Brooke Sumerford, and yours truly. We meet for 45 minutes each week in the Choir Room, socially distanced and wearing masks. Another group meets on Thursday and consists of Pam Hamilton, Alice Barlow, Judy Lance, Ann Graham and me. Their debut is coming up!

Special thanks to our 8:00am Soloists! David Lowe offered beautiful traditional music at our first 8:00am service on September 27. This past Sunday our very talented Maggie Jenkins soloed during the Prelude and offered a duet with Section Leader Stacey White for the Offertory. This coming week Eva Purdy will sing a paraphrase of Psalm 145. Miss Purdy's voice, beautiful to begin with, is blossoming!

Our Wait For It Silent Movie has become popular (over 10,000 views so far)! When you find a recording from a performance long ago and your cherished colleagues bring it to life . . .

Here is a link if you missed it or want to watch it again. Your Christ Church Team had a blast putting it together. The main organ piece is a recording from my Junior Recital at Eastman School of Music in 1985 (Tom assisted in figuring that out just how many years ago that was  . . . thanks Tom). The work is the Final to Loius Vierne's 3rd Symphony for Organ. The closing music is from the Gothic Symphony of another French composer Léon Böellmann.

Prayers for an Election
This election season has been among the most contentious in recent memory. But whatever our politics, as Christians we always have something we can do. We can pray. For the 30 days leading up to the election, Forward Movement is calling Episcopalians and all others to join us in a time of prayer. You can access the prayers suggested by our Bishop, the Right Rev. Frank Logue here.

Join Our Online Contemplative Group
Parishioners from Christ Church Frederica have been meeting regularly online with a group of parishioners from Trinity Episcopal Church, in Asheville, North Carolina for an hour of prayer, reflection, and contemplation on Wednesday mornings, from 11:00 am through 12:00 pm.

The group is going strong and would be happy to welcome any new participants. Email Randy Siegel at [email protected] if you'd like to join us!

Mission and OutreachMissionandOutreach

Help Needed for the Humane Society
As part of her English 1102 course at the Coastal College of Georgia, Christ Church parishioner, Waverly Brown, is doing a service project for the local community. She has chosen to do her project with the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia. Waverly will be collecting dry and canned pet foods, treats and toys in donation boxes that she has placed in four locations, including the front porch of the Christ Church Parish House. Please help her out by donating to this outreach project for the Humane Society!
Backpack Buddies Influence Goes Far
This is Ella in her living room in Denver. She has adopted the Backpack Buddy concept, which includes not only food, but personal hygiene items and toiletries.

Packing food bags on the Backpack Buddy assembly line can leave a lasting impression on the volunteers who work there. Our young friend, Ella Walker, who packs with us when she is here on summer vacation in July-August, has taken her Backpack Buddy experience back home to Denver. She packs "care bags" for the homeless in the city, so that when she is with her Mom in the car, and sees a person in need, she gives them a care bag. Ella has been volunteering with Backpack Buddies for the past six years. She is an eighth grader now and is the granddaughter of Smith Bagley. The Bagley family has graciously opened Musgrove to the Tour of Homes each year for decades.

We thank Ella and all the other good folks who work so hard to feed the hungry in our communities!

Buddy Adoption Special

If you've thought about adopting a young buddy, or have had one in the past, this is a great time to begin a new sponsorship for 2020-2021. Because the school year has already started, you can "adopt" a child for the rest of the year for only $75, instead of the usual $100, which will supply the youngster with weekend food bags for the entire school year. You  are welcome to donate by check (just mail it to Christ Church, at 6329 Frederica Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522 - check memo, Backpack Buddies)
 or give online HERE (choose Backpack Program).

Foods We Need This Week

We have a few items that we'd love to add to our assembly line this week. In addition to the always needed juice boxes, we've got a couple of important staples we could definitely use:

*  JUICE BOXES!
*  Fruit Cups and Applesauce Cups
*  Packs of Oatmeal

(At this time, we do NOT need any plastic bags, so if you have an abundance of them on hand, please take them to Harris Teeter to be recycled. Thank you!)

Also, our friends at the St. Athanasius Feed My Sheep Food Pantry, in Brunswick, could use these important items to help restock their shelves:

*  Canned Green Beans
*  Full Size Boxes of Cereal (Frosted Flakes especially)
*  Canned Fruit

(If you have been to the dentist lately and have an extra toothbrush or two, they would be most welcome.)

We are always grateful for your help with the Backpack Buddies mission! If you have any items you'd like to donate this week, they may be dropped off on the front porch at the Christ Church Parish House. If you have any questions about the Backpack Buddies program, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].
Small Bud Vases Needed for the Flower Ministry
Our Pastoral Care team is once again in need of small bud vases for the shut-in flower ministry. If you have any small vases that you would be willing to donate or purchase for this mission, we would be glad to receive them. Vases may be dropped off on the front porch of the Parish House at your convenience. Please label them for "Pastoral Care' If you have any questions, please contact Mtr. Ashton at [email protected].
Stay Informed

Honey Creek Is Open!

Honey Creek has been closed since the pandemic, but has now opened its doors for individual and small group retreats. "Our lodge and cabins are perfect for individuals and families to come spend a few days away. Brunswick is right down the road, and folks can pick up the food of their choice. And with Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island so close, they can spread out their time between Honey Creek and the Islands," say Executive Director Dade Brantley.

The Lodge rooms and cottages are the perfect getaway in more ways than one, and meet the guidelines to remain socially distant. Each lodge room has a private bathroom, and the cottages include working kitchens. For more information and to book your stay at Honey Creek, contact the office at (912)265-9218 or email Georganne Younger at [email protected].
Diocesan Convention - November 6-7, 2020
This year, our Diocese has decided to hold our annual convention completely virtual. In order to make this possible, we needed to find a virtual venue that will provide a safe, clear and simple way to interact and allow the body to conduct all the business that needs to be done.

Our selection, Hopin, allows us to create a custom, virtual stage to allow attendees to watch speeches and attend events. This will include pre-recorded material, speeches, live sessions and break-out meetings. In addition, there are features that allow for more social interactions such as booths and expos for groups within the convention.

We chose Hopin because it is easy to navigate: allowing users to see a full calendar and join sessions with the click of a button. If you have used Zoom, Teams or any other teleconference software, many of Hopin's features should be familiar to you. There will be more updates about Hopin and other details about our virtual venue in the weeks to come.
Giving Made Easy
