New on the CNS Blog: Going Deep on Sleep with Matthew Walker
Did you get enough sleep last night? Probably not, says Matthew Walker, cognitive neuroscientist and neurophysiologist at the University of California, Berkeley. Statistics show, he says, that two-thirds of adults fail to obtain the recommended 8 hours of nightly sleep.
If that doesn't seem like a big deal, Walker has some robust research to counter that assessment, about the widespread cognitive and health effects of cutting short a night's sleep. He will be sharing this growing body of research as the keynote speaker at CNS 2019 this March in San Francisco. In his lecture, which will be free and open to the public, the one message he hopes attendees will come away with is simple: "Sleep is the single most effective thing that you can do to reset your brain and body health," Walker says. CUNY 2019 Human Sentence Processing Conference, Call for Abstracts

Abstract submission is now open! The deadline for receipt of abstracts is December 10, 2018 by midnight in the authors' timezone.
The 32nd Annual CUNY Conference on Human Sentence Processing will be hosted by The University of Colorado, Boulder at the Hilton Embassy Suites Hotel in Boulder, March 29-31, 2019. The conference focuses on the comprehension, production, and acquisition of language at the sentence level, traditionally drawing researchers from psychology, linguistics, cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, education, and philosophy.
The special session of the 2019 conference is "Variation in the Mechanisms of Human Language Processing". The special session will address fundamental questions about how human language and language processing are shaped by variations in the cognitive capacities of humans. The session will encompass issues related to the impact of developmental language impairments, differences in perceptual experiences (blindness and deafness), cognitive changes associated with aging, and individual differences in cognitive abilities within the typically developing population. The special session aims to produce theoretical and methodological cross-pollination between research focused on variation in language processing and a more standard paradigm within psycholinguistic research that has focused on the average language processing abilities of neurocognitively typical, young adults.

The Social, Life, & Engineering Sciences Imaging center (SLEIC; http://www.imaging.psu.edu ), under the direction of Dr. Michele Diaz (http://sites.psu.edu/mdiazlab/) invites applications for an Assistant Director of Human Imaging position. The individual in this position will assist in the administrative, logistic, and research activities at our research-dedicated facilities: the Human Electrophysiology Facility (HEF) and the 3T Siemens Prisma MRI Facility at the University Park campus. The imaging center contributes to Penn State's thriving research environment by providing state-of-the art brain imaging and data analysis facilities. The Assistant Director's responsibilities will include: oversight of daily operations of the center, working with technical staff, overseeing quality assurance procedures, coordinating administrative activities such as billing and regulatory compliance, developing and conducting training workshops, working with the director on language and aging research, and providing the highest levels of customer service. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a related discipline with a background in EEG and/or functional MRI, as well as research experience in language science or aging. Knowledge of related programming and analysis software is highly desirable (e.g., EEG lab, linux/unix systems, R, FSL, etc.). Excellent interpersonal skills and problem solving abilities are a must. We investigate how the electrophysiological profile of the human brain constrains our ability to understand language-and how this may have shaped human language as such, cross-linguistically. We will directly link behavioral psycholinguistics, experimental neurolinguistics (i.e., mainly M/EEG), corpus linguistics (i.e., cross-linguistic treebanks), and computational linguistics (i.e., information-theoretic modeling).
The successful candidate will investigate the relationship between spectral and temporal properties of the human electroencephalogram and statistical properties of human languages. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in computational linguistics, data science, cognitive science, or an adjacent field. We expect profound experience with annotated linguistic corpora, in-depth knowledge of information theory, and advanced skills in artificial intelligence (e.g. machine learning).

The Cognitive Control lab at Indiana University Bloomington (led by Prof. Joshua Brown) is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to work on novel neurostimulation methods combined with fMRI to study addiction and cognitive control.
The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research program studying addiction with fMRI computational modeling, and neurostimulation, including new temporal interference neurostimulation technology. The Hwang lab for Neurocognitive Dynamics in the Psychological and Brain Sciences Department at the University of Iowa has a fully funded postdoc position available. Our lab focuses on brain network mechanisms, cognitive control, and their developmental processes with a strong emphasis on the human thalamocortical system and neural oscillations. The research focuses on fMRI studies of concept representations, with one focus on representations of scientific concepts, and another on differences between neurotypical and psychiatric populations.

The Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language (San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain) offers three postdoctoral positions in three main broad areas or research:
(1)-Language, reading and developmental disorders: How language acquisition, comprehension, production, and reading take place in the human brain. Special attention will be paid to language disorders and the development of computerized tools for their early diagnosis and treatment.
(2)-Multilingualism and second language learning: The cognitive and brain mechanisms of language acquisition and processing in a second language. Special attention will be paid to multilingualism within the school system and to the development of new educational technologies for second language learning.
(3)- Neurodegeneration, brain damage and healthy aging: Language and Cognition: Early cognitive and brain markers related to language for neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer, Parkinson); neural plasticity and language functions through brain stimulation in the awake patient during surgical brain operations; developing of computerized diagnostic and training tools for aphasic patients and neurodegenerative diseases.
The BCBL (center of excellence Severo Ochoa) promotes a rich research environment without substantial teaching obligations. It provides access to the most advanced behavioral and neuroimaging techniques, including 3 Tesla MRI, a whole-head MEG system, four ERP labs, a NIRS lab, a baby lab including an eyetracker, two eyetracking labs, and several well-equipped behavioral labs. There are excellent technical support staff and research personnel (PhD and postdoctoral students). The positions have a term of appointment of 2 years with a possible renewal.
We are looking for cognitive neuroscientists or experimental psychologists with a background in psycholinguistics and/or neighboring cognitive neuroscience areas, computational modelers, and physicists and/or engineers with fMRI/MEG expertise.
Candidates should have a strong publication track record.

Three-year NIH-funded fellowships are available at the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute (MRRI), in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), for postdoctoral research training in cognitive and motor neuroscience and neurorehabilitation. U.S. Citizenship or permanent resident status is required for NIH-supported fellowships. MRRI may sponsor one additional fellowship open to applicants who do not meet the NIH citizenship/residency requirements.
Available mentors conduct patient-oriented research using approaches that employ behavioral, computational, imaging, electrophysiological, and electrical and pharmacologic neuromodulation methods. We welcome applications from individuals with a doctorate in psychology, cognitive science, communication science, kinesiology, movement science, and/or human neuroscience. We seek researchers who wish to apply basic science principles to the study and treatment of behavioral and brain deficits in adult neurological patients, and/or who wish to use research with patients and neurotypical adults to understand brain-behavior relationships. The laboratory manager will schedule and oversee a large-scale cross-linguistic EEG experiment. Applicants should hold a university degree in business administration, but a humanities degree or vocational qualifications would be considered equivalent. Excellent communication skills in at least three languages are desired; fluency in both German and English is essential.
