Tell Me About…
PTSD
PTSD
June is recognized nationally as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month. PTSD is broadly defined as an ongoing pattern of distress that can develop after experiencing a traumatic event. Some indicators of PTSD include the following symptoms:

  • Emotional “flashbacks” that include physical symptoms, i.e. racing heart or sweating
  • Nightmares or bad dreams
  • Being startled easily
  • Feeling “on edge” most of the time
  • Difficulty with sleeping
  • Angry outbursts
  • Intentional avoidance or thoughts, feelings, events or objects related to the trauma

Yet there is hope. Researchers have found that post-traumatic growth is a positive change experienced as a result of the struggle with a major life crisis or traumatic evening. In fact, development in some areas may surpass what was present before the traumatic event. More information about this may be found at https://www.apa.org/monitor/2016/11/growth-trauma.

At Care and Counseling Center of Georgia, we work with people of all ages and backgrounds to address trauma and facilitate healing and growth. If you or someone you care about is experiencing PTSD-related symptoms, contact us at intake@cccgeorgia.org to schedule an appointment.

Faith Community
Compassion Integrity Training
Last month, CCCG proudly hosted a Compassion Integrity Training for 15 members of our Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program. The training was one session in a ten-part series developed by the Center for Compassion, Integrity and Secular Ethics at Life University.
Leanne Rubenstein - Compassion Integrity Training
Compassionate Integrity Training focuses on and builds toward compassionate integrity: the ability to live one’s life in accordance with one’s values with recognition of common humanity, our basic orientation to kindness, and reciprocity. The training facilitators—CCCG’s own MaryBeth Hayes, Director of Chaplaincy and Clinical Pastoral Education and Leanne Rubenstein, Executive Director of Compassionate Atlanta—led participants through a series of integrative learning experiences.

Staff Spotlight
Joanne Sin
Joanne Sin
Joanne Sin began her new role as Care and Counseling Center of Georgia’s administrative assistant in April. She’s lived in Atlanta most of her life, and she recently graduated with a BA in psychology from Georgia State University.

Her long-term plans include studying marriage and family therapy, likely in a seminary program. She chose to work at CCCG because “I wanted to be in the thick of it, to really understand what goes on in counseling and behind the scenes,” she said.

In addition to learning more about the world of health insurance, Joanne says this new role has taught her about the value of being kind and nonjudgmental every day. “You can’t assume anything about how things are going for anyone,” she said. “You don’t know what people are facing, so it helps to be kind.”
