Great Summer for Cattle

The calves are looking good.

We have a couple of pure white calves - a shorthorn recessive gene showing up.

Being lazy round the watering hole. It's a good day.

This shorthorn cross calf has some beautiful markings.
Love This Windchime!
Garden Update
The troughs at the front of the greenhouse are doing especially well.  Got kind of crazy and planted all sorts of things in them - they seem to be doing fine.

The green beans are starting to produce. This is my best stand of beans ever, and I am excited.
Been picking quite a few sweet snap and snow peas. They are like candy.

Have a nice bed of lettuce.

I just LOVE this old water trough. The corn, melons, sweet potatoes and pumpkins are thriving and promise to give us a nice crop very soon.

Put my last covering of dirt on the potatoes, so now we just water and wait till they are ready to harvest.

Asparagus is going to seed. Every year gets better and better as they spread out.

Onions are so easy, and we will get a wonderful return this year. Just finished the onions from last year, so these are coming just in time.

These are my mystery plants. The package said sweet peppers, but the fruits look more like tomatilloes. The leaves are different, though, so not sure yet what I will get.
Abundant Fruit
I love living in this place! It's a great year for fruit, and an even better year for great friends willing to share. My friend Ann let me pick cherries, apricots and raspberries, and my friend Becky shared her cherries and apricots with me. What a blessing.

The apricots and cherries are abundant!

Tart cherry pie. It was SO good!
Strawberry rhubarb pie.

I made cherry, raspberry, and apricot jam, cherry juice, and canned cherries. Also canned some apricot nectar - not my best effort, so I'm not showing it - but it tastes very good.
Having Fun at the Ranch
Our granddaughters, Bella (left) and Charlee (right) visited for a couple of weeks. What a great time we had swimming at the lake, riding horses, playing with the kittens, helping Grandpa with the irrigation, and helping Grandma pick fruit. He is coloring with them here. They love coming to the ranch.

I just cooked one of the most tender and delicious roasts I have ever cooked - a Sirloin Butt Roast. This is the same meat as sirloin steak, only cut into a roast.

First I seasoned the roast with my Rich & Savory Spice mix, then placed it on a rack in a cake pan. I cooked it at 475 degrees for 20 minutes, turned the oven off, and left it to continue cooking for an hour or so (Don't open the oven!). Once the mashed potatoes and veggies were done, I made some gravy with the drippings and sliced the meat into about 3/8 inch thick slices.

It was a moist medium rare, with incredible flavor. Try it yourself.

Sirloin Butt Roast - $7.99
regularly $8.99

Top Round Steak - $5.99
regularly $7.99

In Closing . . .
These are definitely the hot, dog days of summer. Looking forward to the cooling rains of the monsoon season which generally starts the first part of August. The mosquitoes are pretty vicious this summer, and more abundant than the fruit! They must have some benefit, but I really can't imagine what it is.

Overall we are enjoying a nice summer, and hope that you are too. Thanks for being our friends and taking such an interest in our ranch life. Two city kids living their dream. May all your dreams come true, too.
