"Welcoming Spirit"
The Unitarian Universalist Association began the Welcoming Congregation program in 1989 to help congregations to create inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ identified individuals. In the past thirty years over 75% of UU congregations have participated in that program including First UU. During this service we will celebrate the gifts we bring as LBGTQ+ individuals into our congregation. We'll also explore ways we can continue to deepen our welcoming, especially in light of a recent report from TRUUsT which reveals UU congregations have more work to do to create the trusted safe spaces for trans UUs as promised by the Welcoming Congregation program.

This service will be led by Rev. Andre Mol, Developmental Assistant Minister for Pastoral Care and Membership, with contributions from members of our LGBTQIA Chalice Circle group. During the service we will also welcome new members who have joined the congregation in the last four months.

Mission and Metrics: How We Count What Counts - Webinar

Showing at FUUSB today,
February 21, 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Barnum Room downstairs off the Community Room. Webinar will be projected. Limited space for +/-20 people.

A webinar for both religious professionals and lay members interested in looking at the impacts of their congregational ministries beyond the numbers.

PRESENTER:
Karen Bellavance-Grace, New England Region UUA

In his book, Doing the Math of Mission, Gil Rendle argues that counting is an important part of faithful congregational accountability. We need to track our resources - financial, physical, and human resources - but this tracking and counting is not enough on its own. What are the transformational impacts of our ministries? How do we know we are making a difference? And how do we measure what can't be measured by nickels and noses?

Join us for this webinar to explore how we can shift our orientation from accumulation (of members and money) to transformation. What new metrics would you pay attention to? What becomes possible when we broaden our focus and look for spiritual dividends? How can practices of spiritual leadership shape the way we hold ourselves accountable to our covenant, our mission, and our vision of beloved community?

UU Email Alert
Christina Fulton, Director of Operations

Email Alert: Rev. Susan's email account has been hacked. Several people have received emails from Rev. Susan asking them to purchase "Google Play" cards (or something similar) and to make a copy of the back of the cards and send them the pin numbers. Please Note: Rev. Susan will never, ever, send you an email asking for money or asking you to purchase something for her. It is best to just delete these emails and not to respond to them at all. If you have responded already, please change the password to your email account asap. as the hackers may have already hacked your email account.

New Lawn Sign!
Mary Gade, Property Team

The Property Team announces that we finally have a design, a permit and a contract for the new sign that the UU congregation approved the funding for at the 2018 Annual Meeting. The sign, to be installed during the summer of 2019, will proudly announce our correct name, "First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington," visible for all to see (and photograph) from Church Street, with space for information about minister, services, programs and other messages.

Getting a zoning permit for the project took a long time. Current zoning regulations for signs in the UU neighborhood are written for commercial uses and do not make allowances for historic buildings and lots. The rules permit only one sign, set very near the front sidewalk, and of a size determined by the width of the building, not of the lot. Our existing two signs are "nonconforming" on all counts.

The Property Team is very grateful for the work of Brian Leet, architect and UU member, who skillfully and patiently created several designs, all reflecting design elements of our existing historic signs, before arriving at one that satisfied both the Property Team and the Burlington Planning and Zoning staff. The final proposal is for a single sign, slightly smaller than the combined area of the two existing signs, and to be placed somewhat closer to the Pearl Street sidewalk. This design, although not meeting all the zoning regulations, was deemed by the Burlington Zoning and Planning staff to be "in substantially greater compliance than existing [signs]." At a public hearing, the Burlington Review Board of Adjustments members agreed, and our permit was released.

Strong Is What We Make Each Other
Erika Reif, Family Ministry Assistant

Calling All Actors, Set-builders, and Stagehands: Here is your opportunity to shine!
Family Ministry is staging yet another wonderful multi-gen performance and we need you!!  Adults, youth, and children, all are welcome!

In this story, Monkey and Hare work themselves into a disagreement by blustering through misunderstanding instead of sharing what's in their hearts. Hare offers Monkey a sassy challenge, and then he gets stumped as to how to win it. In this worship service, we sing, drum, and hear the story about Monkey and Hare's contest to build the best hut. The lesson is that living together in community is the greatest gift we have to give and receive. This service is adapted from the story "Hare's Gifts" by Rev. Ken Collier.

The play will be staged at both services on March 10; dress rehearsal for all actors will be on March 9 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Sets will be designed/painted during the Family Ministry Programming time on Sundays, February 24 and March 3

If you would like to be part of the show, please click here to let us now how!

March Madness Game Night
Erika Reif, Family Ministry Assistant

We had a great time in February, so we're trying it again...

Come join UU families and friends for our Groundhog Day Game Night!

We will have some games at the ready and you are welcome to bring a favorite, as well. And because any gathering is more fun with food, we're having a potluck too, so bring a dish to share (skip the plates and utensils-we've got that covered!)

Come for a little bit or the whole time; bring all your ages (and your inner child, too) and play an old favorite or learn a new game (10-handed solitaire anyone?) We look forward to having you join us!

We'll have childcare available in the nursery for the littlest, with some kids' games available if they choose.

Mark your calendar: Saturday, March 2 from 5-8 p.m. in the Community Room.

8th Grade OWL Facilitators Needed
Erika Reif, Family Ministry Assistant

Our 8th Grade OWL program has been a great success this year, thanks to the dedication of our volunteer facilitators. We need more trained individuals to continue to offer this valuable service to our community!

Here is an opportunity to make a real difference, by helping us provide comprehensive sexuality education, not just to the youth of our congregation, but to some of their classmates as well.

Consider becoming a trained 7-9th Grade OWL Facilitator, by attending a weekend training in Auburndale, Massachusetts on May 3-5. (Please note, OWL Facilitators are required to be 25 years of age or older.) FUUSB will cover the fees, which include room and board, for incoming members of our OWL team.

Spots fill up fast, so contact Andrea at
[email protected] or 862-5630 X 28, as soon as possible for more information about our OWL program. More information on the facilitator training can be found here.

Inclement Weather/Emergency Cancellation Protocol
Christina Fulton, Director of Operations

It is the time of year when weather and health emergncies often occur. We strongly encourage members and friends of FUUSB to think carefully before venturing out in such an emergency. If you are ill, please stay home and take care of yourself. If you believe that the roads are unsafe, please stay home.  Your safety is the most important thing. If Sunday worship services need to be cancelled for any reason, the staff will implement their Procedure for Emergency Cancellation of Services. This procedure, in short, is as follows:
  1. The Senior Minister and/or the Director of Operations will make the final decision to cancel.
  2. Once the decision has been made, the Director of Operations will contact all other staff members to notify them of the decision.
  3. The Director of Operations will insure that the Society voicemail message is changed to reflect the cancellation, the congregation is sent an email informing them of the cancellation, notices will be posted on the Facebook page, Facebook group and website, and a notice will be sent to WCAX.
  4. Every attempt will be made to put a sign on the door of the Meeting House.
In the case of a meeting or event cancellation at a time other than Sunday morning worship:
  1. If you are responsible for cancelling a meeting or event, please notify the office as early as possible. We suggest cancelling no later than 3 p.m. for an evening meeting. Also attempt to contact all people who are scheduled to attend your meeting or event via phone or email.
  2. When notified of a cancellation, the Society will put a sign on the door notifying people of the cancellation, put a notice in the Facebook group and in the News section of our homepage.
  3. If the decision is made to close the Meeting House offices, we will contact all groups with events scheduled for that day. We will also put a notice in the Facebook group and in the News section of our homepage.
