MUÑECA (Eddie Palmieri - 50 aniversario 2011)
MUÑECA (Eddie Palmieri - 50 aniversario 2011)

In celebration of the re-opening of El Teatro, join El Museo del Barrio for a special concert by salsa legend and El Barrio native Eddie Palmieri.  Known as one of the finest pianists of the past 60 years,

Eddie Palmieri is a bandleader, arranger and composer of salsa and Latin jazz. His playing skillfully fuses the rhythm of his Puerto Rican heritage with the complexity of his jazz influences: Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner as well as his older brother, Charlie Palmieri. Palmieri's parents emigrated from Ponce, Puerto Rico to New York City in 1926. Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in the Bronx, Palmieri learned to play the piano at an early age, and at 13, he joined his uncle's orchestra, playing timbales. Palmieri's professional career as a pianist took off with various bands in the early 1950s including Eddie Forrester, Johnny Segui's, and the popular Tito Rodriguez Orchestra.

In 1961, Palmieri formed his own band, La Perfecta, which featured an unconventional front line of trombones rather than the trumpets customary in Latin orchestras. This created an innovative sound that mixed American jazz into Afro-Caribbean rhythms, surprising critics and fans alike. Palmieri disbanded La Perfecta in 1968 to pursue different musical endeavors, though he would return to the band's music in the 2000s.

In 2008 Renzo Devia and Alicia Anabel Santos embarked on a journey no other team  has done before. They sought out to find their African roots by traveling to almost  every single country in Latin America.

The intention was to document the African
influence in Latino culture seeking out the often unspoken truths, stories and
hidden facts about this history. What they discovered was a history that never been
taught. It became a spiritual and educational adventure that would change their
lives forever.

Renzo took his 20+ years of experience producing television combined with Alicia's passion for writing and they created a film series that will educate mind and soul.

Colombian American Football Team

Almost ten years ago, a bunch of guys started throwing an American Football around in the Cities of Medellin and Bogota in the South American country of Colombia. Today there are over 400 players, 8 men's tackle teams, over 12 women's flag football teams and kids playing the game of American Football.

American Football has grown so much that in 2018 the national team has been created to compete against the world.

Head Coach Renzo Devia with the help of the Colombian Federation of American Football (FECOFA) has created a national team of American Football to elevate the quality of this sport in all of Colombia.  The national team has inspired players to work harder and get better in the sport.  American Football in Colombia is still an invisible sport; there is no support from private entities or government departments. There are no fields available to practice this sport and the players have to pay to get equipment from the U.S.A.  The average salary of a Colombian is over $300 U.S and still, players find a way to get equipment and play this expensive sport.

In 2018 Head Coach Renzo Devia and FECOFA formed the national team of American Football but they ran out of funds. The national team needs money to move players from city to city, hotels and to pay fees for fields. There are many other expenses like hydration and practice jerseys and other day-to-day equipment that needs to be sent from the U.S like footballs.

Not many people know that American Football is played all over Latin America and the entire world. Be part of this sport growing worldwide. Help us raise money to compete and bring joy to hundreds of men, women, and children in Colombia.

Hollywood woke up very early this morning to watch the announcement of the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards. As expected Alfonso Cuarón 's Roma  earned its fair share of nominations, leading the way with 10. In doing so, it also broke a number of records. Not only did the Participant Media-Netflix film become the streaming platform's first Best Picture citation, but it also made its producer, Venezuelan Gabriela Rodríguez , the first-ever Latina to earn such a distinction. She shares the nomination with Cuarón, who is up for four awards himself (or five, if you count the Best Foreign Language Film category - it's given to the country of origin though his name would go on the statue if Roma  won). Moreover,  both actresses who anchor the film  found themselves honored in their respective categories, making Yalitza Aparicio   the first actress of Mixtec and Triqui descent  to be up for such an award.

While Marvel awards contender " Black Panther" -at $1.3 billion worldwide, the highest grossing movie of 2018 - does not need the Oscars to validate its place in history, the Oscars may need "Black Panther." With viewership sinking to record lows this year, the annual industry fête could certainly use a ratings jolt in 2019. And diversity among its nominees could provide it, starting with the year's most popular film.  In short, inclusion sells. A 2015 Nielsen report found a direct correlation between Oscar nominee diversity in major categories and viewership. The more diverse the nominees, the larger the audience, and vice-versa. Given that ABC's Oscar telecast generates a significant share of the Academy's annual earnings, it's imperative that the awards show maintain high ratings.

They want in on this budding industry.  New York City bodega owners rallied in The Bronx on Sunday morning to urge state politicians to allow them to sell marijuana in the city's 15,000 stores when the green is ultimately legalized.  "Rather than drug peddling outside of these bodegas, we want to bring them inside," said United Bodegas of America spokesman Fernando Mateo, who was joined by four other board members during the 11 a.m. press conference at Anthony's Mini Market in Melrose. "Allow us to become a wholesaler," he continued, "in other words, let us cut out the middle man."

I f you had told Roger McNamee even three years ago that he would soon be devoting himself to stopping Facebook from destroying our democracy, he would have howled with laughter. He had mentored many tech leaders in his illustrious career as an investor, but few things had made him prouder, or been better for his fund's bottom line, than his early service to Mark Zuckerberg. Still a large shareholder in Facebook, he had every good reason to stay on the bright side. Until he simply couldn't.   ZUCKED is McNamee's intimate reckoning with the catastrophic failure of the head of one of the world's most powerful companies to face up to the damage he is doing. It's a story that begins with a series of rude awakenings. First there is the author's dawning realization that the platform is being manipulated by some very bad actors. Then there is the even more unsettling realization that Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg are unable or unwilling to share his concerns, polite as they may be to his face.

Delicias Caleñas brings Colombian food to the Ditmars area; they previously established two locations in Jackson Heights/Corona.
