It's a large cast of 13 actors: five women, four men, and four that can be cast as either. The characters range in age from 20s to 70s. This is a play about a soap opera, a classic play within a play, Katie Dempsey will direct.

First Presbyterian Church Youth String Orchestra
|
|
This week, a Vero Beach audience will get to see and hear the orchestra that brought home a very large trophy from the Music in the Parks competition at Universal Studios in May. The First Presbyterian Youth String Orchestra was awarded First Place with Superior Distinction in their second appearance at the competition, but they aren’t resting on their laurels. The final act is a fundraising concert at First Pres July 25 at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
Jacob Craig, director of music and arts at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach and a bit of a new-world Pied Piper in these parts, had an epiphany one spring day in 2016. He knew he missed teaching high school students at Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn., where he was director of choral activities from 2009-2012. What better way could he find to go back to those roots than to form a string orchestra as a way to spend more time with young musicians?

“There is an amazing transition that takes place for students as they enter into the adult arena, and as research shows that for a student to confidently become an adult, they need to have a minimum of 4-5 adults that they know care about them, and I intend to be one of those adults,” Craig said. “These are extraordinary people, and it is my honor and privilege to spend time with them … .”
By October 2016, with the help of Matt Stott at Vero Beach High School, he had recruited enough students to form this award-winning orchestra. It has grown to 28 students, from 7th grade to incoming college sophomores, Craig said. “The students that responded became the initial group, and they have helped immensely with further identification of students that would be a good fit. I still go into the high school every year for a recruitment pitch, though the word-of-mouth by the students is immensely more effective,” Craig explained.

The orchestra plays during Sunday morning services at First Presbyterian Church every week but that’s only one element of the students’ experience. Entering a competition is “part of fulfilling our mission of pushing the students to be their best in all areas, and competition is a fantastic adjudication of current skill levels.” For students who might think it’s too late to sign up, Craig said, “We accept new students every moment of every year as they show interest.”
The concert Thursday is free, with a freewill offering accepted during the performance to help fund future trips for the orchestra, including an annual competition as well as a performance trip. “This year our performance trip is in the form of a mission trip to the Potchefstroom Children’s Home in South Africa. We will be there in November over Thanksgiving, and will be performing and working at the Children’s Home, as well as collaborating with the university orchestra and churches in the area.”
The FPC Orchestra performs in the 11:00am service each Sunday (10:00am during the summer) at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Boulevard, Vero Beach. During special performances, the String Orchestra is joined by professional wind and percussion musicians from around the Treasure Coast

Searching out invertebrates commonly found around the ELC, young explorers will gather information about these critters' adaptations. Using this info, students will then design a campaign poster and slogan in an attempt to get their invertebrate elected to be President of the ELC.

Cathy Dog-ears Book Pages But We Don't Mind
|
|
Are you extremely patient, calm, and meticulous? I’d like to think I am all of those things and could try my hand at a new-to-me art form, but, sadly, I am going to have to leave book folding to Port St. Lucie artist Cathy Estremera. She very kindly took the time to satisfy my curiosity by telling me how to do it, but sorry, Cathy. It didn’t sink in.
Estremera has been a creator of art all her life, and like many, didn’t let herself acknowledge that she was an Artist until fairly recently. She has considered herself a fibre artist for almost 20 years, and once she accepted that she really is an Artist with a capital A, she began showing the book folding art you see in these photos.

The artist said she began folding paper as a young girl. That evolved into much more advanced forms as an adult. “Among the paper arts I do are Origami, Golden Venture Origami (3-D Origami), Kusudama Origami, Teabag Folding, and Iris Folding.” Her book folding education came over the Internet. “I reached out to a Scandinavian book artist and an English book artist that were pushing book art from the Traditional Folding style to the Cut and Fold style and they both agreed to teach me via the computer. During that time period they combined Traditional and Cut & Fold styles to create the Hybrid (aka Combi) style.“ Still not getting it, Cathy.

I wondered if Florida’s weather had an effect on her art. “Yes and no,” she said. “I am working with books and paper so humidity and our bright sun can destroy or prematurely age them. However, if they are displayed in a climate controlled environment (i.e. most homes), not in direct sunlight or in the kitchen or bathroom the book art will be fine.” For those thinking about trying it, Estremera has a tip: “Be patient and precise. This is an art form that a being millimeter off will effect and possibly ruin your book.”

For Estremera, her fiber art is never far away, though. “As a fiber artist I am drawn to the older techniques of working with yarn, cords, floss and fabric. I often dye my own yarn, weave (my looms include tapestry looms, rigid heddle looms, 4 shaft table loom, Inkle loom, Accordion loom, 2 string rag rug loom), create Viking Whipcord, and ply-split braiding."
She enjoys sketching and has dabbled in mural art. Still to be seen are the original India ink sketches she draws before making the first fold in a page. Estremera’s studio is in her home but a selection of her book art is at the Art Connection of Fort Pierce in the historic Arcade Building on the corner of US 1 and Orange Avenue. Music & Paint leads off the Space Coast Symphony's concert at 6 p.m. July 27 at Scott Center for Performing Arts in Melbourne. Composer/pianist Austin Wintory and artist Angela Bermudez improvise a duet of wordless storytelling. You have to see this!
Then Maestro Aaron Collins and the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra take One Giant Leap in A Tribute to Apollo, a celebration of the anniversary of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

Ballet Vero Beach with Dimensions
|
|
I’m always intrigued when I meet someone who has taken an idea and turned it into a roaring success in the arts, hardly ever an overnight success. I’m talking about seeing the big picture and figuring out how to fill the frame and, more important, how to fill hundreds of seats again and again. Aaron Collins comes to mind, with the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra. Adam Schnell and Camilo Rodriguez, who created Ballet Vero Beach, followed that same bumpy path a few years later. The ballet company has been phenomenally accepted by the community, and has started a new, must-see, holiday tradition with its Nutcracker on the Indian River.
A Ballet Vero Beach love for collaboration often takes Schnell and his dancers to Nebraska and brings dancers back to Vero Beach through season. At one summer intensive program at Motion 41 in Omaha, Schnell connected with instructor Jennifer Kronenberg, retired from Miami City Ballet. Those Midwest conversations led to this year’s Riverside Dance Festival, another collaboration, this one between RiversideTheatre and Ballet Vero Beach.

The annual event is an opportunity for serious students of dance to study with professionals, participate in master classes and open rehearsals, “and work towards the creation of their own work to be performed alongside Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami in a mixed repertory concert to culminate the festival.” The big performances are next weekend, Aug. 2 and 3. Joining the DDTM ensemble will be Ballet Vero Beach’s Anders Southerland, and co-founder Camilo Rodriguez, who will perform in Gerald Arpino’s Light Rain. Kronenberg said, “Gerald Arpino is one of America’s most important choreographers of the 20th century, and Light Rain is really one of his, and subsequently The Joffrey Ballet’s, signature works.”

Kronenberg is delighted that the talked-about collaboration has materialized. Between them, Dance Dimensions’ Kronenberg and her husband, Carlos Miguel Guerra, had almost forty years with the Miami City Ballet, thirty of them as principal dancers before they retired. So what do two ballet dancers do when they leave their life’s work? They were faced with some difficult decisions.

They had offers to work out of state, but they knew Miami was home. “We had developed a strong connection to the community, have our family here, and had built a home for ourselves and our young daughter,” Kronenberg said. “We didn’t foresee much in the way of professional opportunity outside of MCB. We could have accepted teaching positions at any number of schools, or even started our own (which we had strongly considered), but at the end of the day we knew we wanted to be working with professionals and eventually directing a company.”
In the tradition of the old Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland — We’ll put on a show! — movies, they gathered some local, out-of-work dancers. Then an open date at Miami-Dade County Auditorium magically appeared, and they were off and running. Their former director at MCB, Edward Villella, advised them, “but it was Septime Webre who really gave us the final kick in the pants, so to speak. He stressed to us that if we wanted to do this, the time was now. Just go for it, no apologies, no fear, no excuses.” Webre had been artistic director for The Washington Ballet for 17 years and now directs the Hong Kong Ballet.

Advice is good but tangible help is even better, and Webre came through in spades. “He very generously offered us his ballet Juanita & Alicia, which he created (for) The Washington Ballet and had never been performed in Florida. It was a natural fit for Miami, steeped in Cuban nostalgia,” Kronenberg said. The opening was a huge success, leaving the public and the dancers asking for more. The couple realized that they suddenly had a huge responsibility on their shoulders to keep the momentum going. “Since that show in November 2016, the bus has taken off at about 100 MPH. We are very fortunate to have a supportive board, an amazingly invested and talented artistic and production team, as well as incredible group of advisors available to us when we need guidance. Our rapid success has really been the result of a truly collective team effort.” And great collaborations.

The 2019 Art Excursion went to Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a total-immersion arts tour. Operas, galleries, art strolls, even glassblowing. And a good time was had by all, according to reports.

Record Your Voice on Edison's Invention!
|
|
Curious about how Edison recorded sound? For one hour on July 26 and Aug. 2, the Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers will give visitors a rare opportunity to record their voice using the technology created by Thomas Edison and his staff in the 19th century, and then hear it played back.
International phonograph expert John Kurdyla will demonstrate the process between 11 a.m. and noon both days. According to an Edison Ford spokesperson, Kurdyla has one of the largest private collections of phonographs and Edison memorabilia and is an expert on Edison recorded sound. His book, When Music Was Magic, is available in the museum store.

Aerial Antics Youth Circus
|
|
The Vero Beach Centennial celebration will take on an elegantly athletic look Aug. 1-3 when the Aerial Antics Youth Circus takes the stage for its 45th year. It’s a production of the Vero Beach Recreation Department, showcasing gymnasts and performing arts students, along with summer campers from Leisure Square.
Spokesperson Patty Howard said the choreographed routines will highlight “the most popular crazes from the past through present including the Charleston, ’80s and ’90s hip hop, modern lyrical, the Twist, Grease Lightning and many more.” Getting in the spirit of the Vero Beach Centennial, there will be some surprises in the form of a few Vero-specific routines, Howard said.

Head coaches for the camp are Patty Howard, Angie Holshouser, Liz Matthews, and Julie Norman. Deja Miller, gymnastics coordinator for the event is also a performer. She said between 300 and 400 performers from three to 24 years old, will participate, either as performers or volunteers for the event. There’s no audition for the show; all campers are included. Miller said, “Our main goal is for the youth to have fun within the program!” They decide if they want to participate, and a majority of the campers do. “I actually know a few families who fell in love with the program and they changed their vacation dates so their child would be able to attend!”

The performers learn two dances, a gymnastics routine, and an aerial routine for the shows. The show has continued for some of the performers. Miller said some have gone on to be part of Cirque de Soleil and other shows.
The classes leading up to Aerial Antics Aerial Circus run for six weeks. Miller said, “I always see a few kids who are either shy or don't really see themselves as a gymnast. By the 3rd-4th week I see a confidence in them just from our staff supporting them and giving them that boost of they can do whatever they put their mind to!” She added, “they don't just take a gymnastics skill home that they learned, but a life skill of they can do anything!”

Edison and Ford Winter Estates (EFWE) was selected as one of 20 gardens to be represented in the United States Botanic Gardens' "Gardens Across America" exhibit in Washington, D.C. The display includes a model of the Edison Botanic Research Laboratory and rubber research gardens and will be on display near the U.S. Capitol Building until October 1. The Gardens Across America exhibit in D.C. is free for all visitors, as is admission to the U.S. Botanic Garden. Comprised of Peruvian and American musicians, Totem Cave explores the depths of improvisation, while navigating different musical styles with a distinctive sound. Its musical fabric weaves elements of Afro-Peruvian and Brazilian music with jazz and funk. This concert is indoors in the Great Hall. Seating is first-come, first-served.
