 As a reminder to all of our parents and guardians, we did release student progress reports for the 3rd quarter this past week. If this applies to your household, please review your student's results as soon as possible keeping in mind our tutoring opportunities listed below.
In this week's edition we have elaborated on various scholarships with upcoming deadlines not too far off. If you are a senior seeking financial aid for college, please take a close look at this information as we don't want you to lose out on a valuable option just for missing a due date.
If you are opening this over the holiday weekend, enjoy the Presidents' Day holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone back at school Tuesday morning.

Late Arrival Students
Must have school ID cards to enter campus late; security guards will open gates approximately 10 minutes before the tardy bell. Be on time to your class, even if you have "late arrival."
FSA Literacy Night (March 3)
FSA Literacy Night in the Cafeteria on Freshman Campus, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Come experience the curriculum and instruction offered for all grade levels at Colonial HS. Interactive stations will help parents to understand what students are expected to know and to do in math, science, English, social studies and elective courses. For more information, contact your student's counselor.
ANNUAL PARENT SURVEY
Colonial High School will participate in an online survey until March 13 as one method of reaching all stakeholders. Please submit your survey responses this week to ensure that we get your feedback!
This survey will help us better understand our strengths and areas for improvement. It will only take a few minutes and it is completely anonymous.
The survey is available in Arabic, English, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Black History Spirit Week
|
|
The Legacy Club sponsored activities each day of the week. Highlights included the singing of the Negro National Anthem during lunch, dressing in traditional African attire, and a door decorating contest! Thank you to all who participated in celebrating this important time in American history.
|
Victoria Sjostedt, 11th grader at Colonial High School is the winner of the Zora Poster Art Competition!!
Victoria will receive a $250 cash prize, a Sam Flax gift basket and her artwork will be created into a commemorative poster for the attendees of the ZORA! Festival to enjoy. The Eatonville Branch of Orange County Library System will also display the artwork in their branch during Black History Month along with their Zora Neale Hurston displays.

Main Campus: Mr. Venable's Marine Science classes analyzed the impact of an oil spill through simulation.

Meanwhile, in Ms. Clarke's English 2 class, students are developing theme statements and identifying supporting evidence from Shakespeare's tragedy, MacBeth.

On Freshman Campus, our February students of the month were recognized, along with our HERO students of the month.
|
Dr. Maestre and Ms. Abreu (Math Coach) get the griddles ready, while Ms. Armenteros (ESOL Compliance Specialist) flips pancakes for our Freshman Honor Roll Breakfast Celebration!

Main Campus: Students enjoyed a pancake breakfast on both campuses for earning Honor Roll- all As- for the 1st Semester. Parents enjoyed celebrating with their children while feasting on chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes.

Ms. Witham, Mr. Thompson, and Ms. Wright (along with the rest of the administrative and guidance teams) worked to make this student achievement celebration a success!

On Friday, February 14, 2020, Keshara Cowans (OCPS Staff Attorney), Onchanto Am (VP of Quality and Chief Legal Officer for IMPower) , Scott Leitner (VP, Commercial Relationship Manager at Axiom Bank), Jessica Travis (Owner of Jessica Travis, PA), presented Financial Literacy, an interactive presentation that addressed creating and maintaining a budget, banking 101, the importance of maintaining a good credit score, and information about student loans vs. grants and scholarships. The presentation included time for questions and answers and was presented to Ms. Saez and Ms. Smith's Government and AP Economics classes.

Two of our very own Reading teachers have been recognized as making an IMPACT! Ms. Regan (10th grade) and Ms. Montijo (9th grade) attend professional development to get the very latest updates and bring the information back to our Reading department teachers. As you can see below, each teacher utilizes digital tools and graphic organizers to engage and support student learning. Congratulations to Ms. Montijo and Ms.Regan for making an IMPACT!

Valencia College Dual Enrollment (VCDE) is an opportunity for students with 3.0 and higher GPAs to earn FREE COLLEGE CREDIT. The window for VCDE is open January 27th to March 2nd.
Until then, interested students should practice for the PERT - reading, writing, and math tests. A wide variety of practice materials are available online free of charge.

Boys Basketball
Our boys basketball team played a challenging game on Monday against our rival, University HS. Each quarter of the game was a nail-biter as our Grenadiers drove up and down the court. They lost the game in overtime, but learned a valuable lesson about persistence.
|
Water Polo
Meanwhile, in the water, our boys and girls water polo teams each played close games against Wekiva HS this past week.

To be eligible to purchase a ticket to attend Prom, students must have:
1. A GPA equal to/greater than 2.0
2. No Level 4 disciplinary incidents (2019-2020 school year)
3. No more than 5 unexcused absences from school
4. Paid or set up payment for media center obligations (includes chargers, laptops, books)

If you have a D or an F in any class, you should attend tutoring! We just want to remind you that tutoring takes place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Any student with less than a 2.0 GPA is strongly encouraged to attend. Your participation in tutoring will help you bring your grades up.
Tutoring has resumed on Main Campus! See the room numbers below of the teachers who are providing tutoring. Students can grab food from the food line outside of the cafeteria and head to their respective tutoring class.
