Technology is taking the world in new and exciting directions.  Nowhere was this more apparent than at the fourth annual Goleta Chamber of Commerce's TechTopia Summit held at UC Santa Barbara on July 11th, 2019.  Over 100 attendees gathered to enjoy an interactive walking tour that took them from the one-of-a-kind Allosphere Research Facility to the California Nanosystems Institute and then to the UC Santa Barbara Nanofabrication Facility.

At each stop, attendees were greeted by subject matter experts and given a tantalizing glimpse into the innovative work being done.  Also showcased during the event were the partnerships between the local business community and the school.  Discussions included how local entrepreneurs can collaborate with UCSB to take advantage of world-class facilities and gain access to the latest innovations and experts in their fields.

After the tour, everyone gathered for a reception and program at the beautiful Club and Guest House, overlooking the lagoon.  A panel of experienced entrepreneurs shared their wisdom and insights about growing a business in Goleta.  Panelists included Greg Fish, Entrada Ventures; Kathy Odell, Women's Economic Ventures (WEV); and Kyle Lewis, Technology Management Graduate Advisor at UC Santa Barbara.  While growing a business in the Goodland is not without challenges, they all spoke positively about the unique opportunities available to the Goleta business community right in their own backyard.

Goleta Chamber Updated on Cannabis in the County
The Goleta Chamber has been keeping a close eye on the concerns regarding  cannabis in Santa Barbara County  due to the important impacts on our community. On July 1st , the City of Goleta held a special meeting to pass a resolution requesting the County of Santa Barbara take immediate action to address and mitigate the impacts of outdoor cannabis cultivation.  The Chamber testified at the hearing to support the City's efforts.

The Chamber sent a letter and testified at the July 16th County Board of Supervisors   hearing. At this meeting, County Supervisors pushed forward more changes to Santa Barbara County's cannabis ordinances, including earlier requirements for odor control and efforts to speed up the permit-application review process.

The Chamber is requesting the County enact regulations that protect existing agriculture industries, that create a large buffer between the cannabis grows and our neighborhoods, and that the operations must have odor controls or other methods that ensure the odor does not negatively affect our local economy. We will continue to watch this important issue.

The newly-formed Santa Barbara County Chamber Coalition commissioned a report from the California Economic Forecast into the economic and fiscal impacts of restoring SYU's interim and full oil production in Santa Barbara County. The study was presented at the Goleta Chamber's July Issue and Policy Roundtable.

ExxonMobil's facility has been idle since May 2015. Until a pipeline alternative becomes available, ExxonMobil is pursuing a temporary trucking permit to transport crude oil to market - allowing for a phased restart of SYU. The interim trucking proposal would result in the creation of hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in new income and spending.

Restarting SYU would create a meaningful increase in funding to Santa Barbara County public safety, fire protection, local government services and the local K-14 public school system. Restarting ExxonMobil's three platforms, plus replacing the Plains pipelines, would bring in an estimated $8 million a year in additional property tax revenues. Key findings of the report tie the vital funding missing from Santa Barbara County to the shutdown of SYU.

The City of Goleta wants to make sure you are prepared in the event of a power outage. Southern California Edison (SCE) has recently developed a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) plan to shut off power when hot, dry, and windy weather could start a wildfire. A PSPS outage will last as long as dangerous weather conditions exist, plus the amount of time it takes for power company workers to inspect and repair the equipment in the affected area(s). Residents of Goleta (and anyone with SCE) need to prepare for a power outage that could last 3-5 days. For more information, please go to  SCE's PSPS webpage or call their customer service line at 1-800-655-4555.

To help the community prepare, local agencies have put together information on what a PSPS could mean for you (i.e. food spoilage, no internet, businesses closed, etc.) and what you can do now to prepare (i.e. have a battery powered radio, put together an emergency kit, etc.). Please review the information below:
It is also recommended to register for emergency alerts from the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management (SBCOEM) at  www.ReadySBC.org. You can also sign up to receive emergency information from the City of Goleta by going to  https://tinyurl.com/goletaemergency, texting Goleta Emergency to 468311, or calling 805-961-7508.
