CREATIVE PLAY THERAPY INTERVENTIONS FOR

BEREAVEMENT AND DIVORCE

Presenter: Liana Lowenstein, MSW, RSW, CPT-S
6 CE Hours/Clock Hours/ Contact Hours

Description:

When children enter therapy because they have experienced a significant loss, they are at a very vulnerable time in their lives. They are often anxious about the therapeutic process and reluctant to talk directly about painful feelings. Activities that are creative and play-based can engage children and help them to express their thoughts and feelings.  This workshop will present a brief theoretical overview followed by a variety of playful interventions to treat children and teens coping with bereavement and divorce. A range of innovative activities will be outlined, including therapeutic games, art, and stories.

This workshop is designed for:

Social workers (LCSW, LMSW, LISW, BSW, AAW), psychologists (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) school counselors, school psychologist, professional counselors (LMHC, LCMHC, CMHC, LPC, LCPC), marriage and family therapists (LMFT, LIMFT) art therapists, play therapists, occupational therapists, graduate students, and others in the mental health-related field.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to…

1)    Define grief, traumatic grief, and disenfranchised grief.

2)   Identify the impact of loss at diffrent developmental stages.

3)    Articulate the contiuum of parent-child relationships after separation and divorce.

4)    Identify the key areas to assess when working with a bereaved child in play therapy.

5)   Describe strategies to maintain neutrality when working with high-conflict divorce cases.
