What's New in July 2019!
In the July 2019 edition of Sidelines you will find the following content:
From the President: Shawn Kerger, DO, FAOASM
This month, I’d like to share the continued efforts of the AOASM as we head into the AOA House of Delegates and Board of Trustees meeting later this month. I will report on any significant outcomes from that meeting in next month’s Sidelines newsletter.

For those of us who are boarded through NMM for their CAQ in sports medicine, there has been some concern about this pathway being eliminated through the merger and what this might mean for certification. We’ve had it confirmed by the AOA that those who have already traveled this pathway to sports medicine will be allowed to re-certify for sports medicine through NMM. The pathway does not exist in the future in the ACGME system, and for the past decade there have been so few applicants via this pathway that the AOBNMM has decided not to continue the application process for this to continue to exist. For those who wish to be NMM-certified and have a CAQ in sports medicine, I encourage you to look at the combined residency option for a primary board plus NMM, then apply for a sports medicine fellowship. These pathways will continue to provide an option for your future practice.

Due to the strong support for our most recent collaboration with the Association of Ringside Physicians (ARP) at our Annual Conference in Austin this year, I have created a formal liaison position for the AOASM with the ARP. I am happy to report that John Neidecker, DO, FAOASM, has willingly accepted this post and is already helping out the AOASM with ideas and contacts for future conferences. We look forward to our next formal collaboration in a few years with the ARP!

Check your email for a very important announcement regarding the open election of new members to our Board of Directors (email was distributed to membership on July 24). This is a critical task we ask of our AOASM members annually, and I consider it akin to our citizen duty to vote in our local, state, and national government elections. The members of our Board of Directors help guide and direct your organization, and, as such, deserve your serious consideration. I know that all the candidates are excellent physicians with strong, dutiful passion to move us forward – so we need your help to decide!

Finally, in honor of the 50 th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, I offer this quote from Michael Collins (astronaut and commander of Apollo 11):  “I really believe that if the political leaders of the world could see their planet from a distance of, let’s say 100,000 miles, their outlook would be fundamentally changed. The all-important border would be invisible, that noisy argument suddenly silenced.”

As we head into 2020 and the AOA/ACGME merger with all its certain problems and challenges to follow, I hope that we all keep in mind the scope of what we’re doing and how small most of our conflicts are compared with the problems our fellow humans face on a nearly daily basis. We have so much to be grateful for, and it only takes a moment to think of the many brothers and sisters of ours who are less fortunate to appreciate our place in all this.

Athletes and the Arts :
Dance Medicine First-Ever Certification

Written By Becca Rodriguez Regner, DO, FACOFP

The Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) in conjunction with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is now offering a certificate of completion in performing arts medicine for physicians (MD and DO), allied healthcare professionals (athletic trainers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, psychologists, chiropractors, nurses, licensed massage therapists, manual osteopathic practitioners [including non-US trained osteopaths], acupuncturists, and others as approved), and arts educators. This certification is new as of 2019.

Per PAMA website description: “To receive the specialized certificate, healthcare professionals need to complete an online lecture series of 12, 30 minute course content lectures prior to the PAMA symposium ( unknown future sites-TBA). Physicians expect that there will be a 6-hour hands on teaching course at a convention followed by a 1-hour test of understanding. Physicians need to pass the test in order to receive the certificate of completion (online lectures are included on the test).
What can you expect to learn? The online lectures discuss the epidemiology and etiology of health issues occurring in performing artists. PAMA and ACSM state that this “hands-on training course on Dance, Instrumental, Vocal, & Actors (DIVA) pre-participation physical exam assessment of the performing artists is where clinicians are taught specific exam techniques used in performing arts medicine. Health professionals will be able to discuss occupation-specific questions that should be asked during the initial interview with performing artists to identify key injury causes; identify basic physical elements of performance on common instruments; apply key special assessment procedures that are useful when evaluating performing artists; establish goal-oriented and evidence-based treatment approaches; assess basic requirements of the occupational environment of the performing artist; implement functional return to performance protocols; and describe preventative approaches to medial problems of musicians and dancers.”

Topics for Dance Medicine Courses:

  •    General Health and Wellness for Performing Artists
  •    Neuro-musculoskeletal Injuries in Musicians
  •    Common Musculoskeletal Injuries in Dancers
  •    Biomechanics applied to Music and Dance technique
  •    General Fitness, Conditioning and Rehabilitation
  •    Medical Conditions in Performing Arts Medicine
  •    Environmental Concerns in Performing Arts Medicine
  •    Hearing Health
  •    Vocal Healthcare
  •    Performance Anxiety and Psychological Conditions
  •    Special Conditions found in Musicians, Focal Dystonia
  •    Dancer.Instrumentalist.Vocalist.Actor (D.I.V.A.) pre-participation assessment and physical evaluation
  •    Applied performance anatomy and physiology

At the completion of the pre-conference course (again, given before a conference of PAMA or ACSM), all participants will have the choice of taking an exam tailored to their area of specialization (medicine, allied health, voice, dance, instrumental music). If a passing grade is attained, physicians will be given a certificate of completion. Do physicians get credit? Yes! The Postgraduate Institute for Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. For more information, please look at the PAMA website, artsmed.org .

SAOASM Student Spotlight
Dianna H. Nguyen, UNTHSC-TCOM, DO/PhD Candidate, Class of 2023
What made you interested in sports medicine and how has SAOASM impacted you as a medical student?

Although I did not have much formal athletic experience growing up, I was always inspired by the hard work athletes put in and their determination to fight through and recover from sports injuries to continue pursuing what they love. Their dedication and commitment sparked my interest in sports medicine, as I hope to help athletes recover from their injuries and get them back to their sport and doing what they love in the future.

I was at first hesitant to join SAOASM because I am no expert in sports, but as my fascination for sports medicine grew, I decided to overcome my hesitation and join the TCOM Chapter and it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made! The club was welcoming and provided me with so many opportunities to gain more exposure in sports medicine, from lunch seminars and journal clubs to volunteering in the community through sports injury clinics and providing medical coverage at sports events. As former president of AOCPMR-TCOM Chapter, I had the opportunity to collaborate with SAOASM-TCOM Chapter in several volunteer events with RISE Adaptive Sports and other adaptive sports organizations/events (e.g., Kid-Netic Games, Southwest Wheelchair Athletic Association, Wheelchair Motocross World Championship, Wheelchair Rugby Tournament, Lone Star Para Invitational Track/Field Meet, Wheelchair Softball World Series, etc.), helping to provide opportunities for kids and adults with disabilities in the community to participate in sports.

SAOASM not only exposed me to different opportunities in sports medicine, it has provided me a sports med family and a network of mentors and colleagues always willing to provide guidance and support. I couldn’t have done it without the wonderful TCOM SAOASM officers, advice from previous regional representatives, faculty at UNTHSC-TCOM, and support from SAOASM E-board. Aside from this, SAOASM gave me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and speak at a national conference by allowing me to give an IGNITE Lecture on Volunteering with Adaptive Sports. Thank you, SAOASM!!!

Dianna has been an active member of SAOASM at TCOM and even served as the SAOASM Midwest Regional Representative (2018-19) where she worked with presidents at various chapters in her region to plan the Midwest Regional Conference! She attended the 2019 AOASM Clinical Conference where UNTHSC-TCOM received the Altruistic Chapter of the Year award. At the conference, Dianna also presented a terrific IGNITE Lecture on her experiences volunteering with adaptive sports!

This year, Dianna hopes to continue her involvement with SAOASM on the local and national levels and continue to raise awareness for adaptive sports while she continues pursuing her PhD research!

Congratulations and thank you, Dianna, for your hard work and dedication to SAOASM!
