Happy 215th Birthday to Ohio University!

It was 215 years ago today that the Ohio General Assembly approved charter plans to create Ohio University – the oldest institution of higher education in the Northwest Territory. We hope you will take a few moments today to reflect on the history of Ohio University and how you are a part of it.
Congratulations to Dr. Catherine Cutcher for receiving the Outstanding Learning Community Instructor Award
Congratulations to Dr. Catherine Cutcher for winning the Outstanding Learning Community Instructor Award presented by University College and the Learning Community Programs.
 
Dr. Cutcher, who also serves as the assistant director for undergraduate programs in the Center for International Studies, received this award for her amazing work in teaching the Global Studies Learning Community for first-year students. She has served as a Learning Community Instructor for several years now and is very committed to assisting her students. Here are a few comments from the students who nominated her for the award this year.

Nina Adanin is a doctoral student for Instructional Technology at Patton College of Education, Ohio University. She has conquered the world’s most challenging peaks: Mont Blanc, Grand Paradiso, the Grossglockner, Manaslu, Denali, Nanga Parbat, Aconcagua, Mt. Everest, and more. From Alaska to the Himalayas, she has not only climbed, but she has saved lives in the process. Nina was awarded a medal of honor in Alaska for rescuing a mountaineer. She has ridden a motorcycle across Thailand and traversed the Atlantic in a sailboat. Nina is interested in “Distance Learning in Extreme Environment”. Currently, she is working on the project of integration technology for collecting data regarding climate change in the polar regions.

An exhibition featuring the work of a group of Syrian artists who lived through part of the Syrian crisis and currently reside outside of Syria in different countries. This exhibition is created and curated by Basil Masri Zada as part of his doctoral dissertation project in the School or Interdisciplinary Arts. This exhibit is sponsored by the  Kennedy Museum of Art  in partnership with  Middle East and North Africa Studies Certificate War & Peace Theme , and  College for Fine Arts .

Dr. Özgür Özdamar is Associate Professor of Political Science at Bilkent University and currently a visiting fellow at Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on foreign policy analysis, forecasting, international relations theories and security studies. He currently serves as vice president and program chair at the International Studies Association-ENMISA section, as editor of All Azimuth: Journal of Foreign Policy and Peace and director of research at Center for Foreign Policy and Peace Studies. 2019 Ohio University Student Research and Creative Activity Expo 
Registration for the 2019 Ohio University Student Research and Creative Activity Expo is now open. Students must enroll online at  www.ohio.edu/studentexpo  to participate.
Registration closes Thursday, Feb. 28 . Note: Registration will be capped at 850 presenters.

Who can participate?
Participation is open to all undergraduate, graduate and medical students, as well as postdoctoral fellows, on the Athens and regional campuses.

What can be presented?
Posters, exhibits, performances, film screenings and other presentation formats are welcome.

Are students eligible for awards?
Awards will be given for the best presentations in each category: $150 (1st prize) and $75 (2nd prize). Categories are limited to no more than 12 presentations and assigned by discipline. For sessions with undergraduate and post-degree students, judges may elect to give two, first-place prizes (one each for an undergraduate and a post-degree student). In this case, a second-place prize will not be awarded. In addition, several sponsors will offer special award categories.

OHIO Emergency Micro-grants for Students
Fund Purpose: These emergency micro-grants are designed to help OHIO students facing financial difficulty due to emergency situations or one-time hardships. The funds are awarded to help alleviate short-term financial need and are managed by the Dean of Students Office in collaboration with Student Financial Aid and Scholarships.
This fund is sustained through generous gifts of donors, so the grants awarded do not need to be repaid.

Micro-Grant Guidelines:
• Grants do not typically exceed $1000, and are specific to the identified need.
• Generally, grants can only be awarded once per academic year.
Eligibility:
• Student must be a currently enrolled degree seeking Ohio University (Athens Campus) student in the semester in which the funds are being requested with at least half-time to full time credit hours
• Must have a proven record of academic progress verified by earned credits, GPA, and in good academic standing.
• Student has a FASFA on file with Financial Aid or willing to complete one (if able).
• Student has exhausted all possible other financial resources, including student loans, Medicaid, personal financial accounts, etc.
• Student must be able to provide sufficient documentation of financial need (e.g. Billing statements, receipts, repair estimates, etc.)

Ohio University International Opportunity: Counseling and Education Cultural View of Botswana; July 6-29, 2019
The goal of this program is to broaden participants' awareness of social diversity, counseling, education, and cultural issues in a non-American setting and to share a travel abroad adventure with friendly colleagues in a semi-structured environment. This is a chance for current and future counselors and education professionals to learn about counseling, education, and human services work in Botswana, while enjoying day trips to cultural and historic sites.

Air travel to and from Botswana is not included in the program fee; however, lodging and classroom accommodations at the University of Botswana are included in program fees. For further information on sign up, the costs, and the amenities that go with the trip (e.g., tours, some meals, arts events), contact the Office of Global Opportunities at Ohio University.

Participants will reflect on cultural parallels and differences in America and Botswana and examine counseling and education approaches. All excursions are educational in nature and include the Botswana National Museum, local craft area, Gaborone Game Reserve, Main Mall, Livingstone, Thamaga pottery,Bahurutshe and Manyana rock paintings, Otse Gauge and manyelanong. Participants will also complete NBCC International (NBCC-I) Mental Health Facilitator (MHF) program. Please share this opportunity with students of counseling or other majors as the course will meet the requirements for many cross-cultural courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, part of which will consist of an online dimension that will occur in Botswana and through the summer.

NYU Policy Case Study Competition 2019
Students from colleges and universities around the world are invited to think critically and innovate by researching, designing and presenting policy proposals on today’s most pressing issues.
Hosted annually by the New York University Politics Society since 2014, the Policy Case Competition is a conference where students of all experience levels are given the opportunity to propose policy solutions in response to the largest and most critical current issues. In the past, teams have won a cash prize and a paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The Zero Hunger Internship is a paid opportunity for current college students and recent grads to learn how to reach zero hunger through policy and advocacy in Washington, D.C. For 10 weeks over the summer, you’ll be placed with Washington-based organizations that work to end domestic or global hunger. You’ll learn about policy, program implementation, development and fundraising, and nonprofit management in the anti-hunger field as you gain real work experience.

DANTA Tropical Biology and Conservation Field Courses in Costa Rica 2019
DANTA courses are intended for undergraduates or early graduate level students who have a keen interest in tropical ecosystems and conservation, but have little or no experience of working in a tropical environment. Participants may enroll on either a credit or non-credit basis.

DANTA operates on a cooperative and collaborative teaching model with multiple international instructors on each course. Co-instruction allows for more individualized instruction, and the sharing and appreciation of different ideas. Visiting scholars are often incorporated into the curriculum to broaden student experience.

New program offers faculty/staff opportunities to travel abroad
An innovative new program is providing funding for Ohio University faculty and staff to travel internationally and take part in global engagement programs.

The Office of Global Opportunities has created the OHIO Global Connections Professional Development Initiative. Participants in the first cohort will travel to Vietnam and Thailand for two weeks in May 2019.

Call for Applications for college American students wishing to experience Thailand this summer
Thailand’s Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC) in collaboration with the  U.S. Generation Study Abroad (GSA) program of the Institute of International Education (IIE) is offering a 30-day summer course from June 21 – July 20, 2019 in Thailand. The course, “Thai Community in Globalized Context,” is open for undergraduate and graduate American students to experience Thai cultural diversity and sustainable development.

This course is designed as one month field trip learning. It examines how the concept of Sufficiency Economy Philosophy has been implemented as means to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the multi-cultural contexts of Thailand. Along the field trip to the northern, southern and eastern part of Thailand, community social issues and the resilience of people in response to global change will be discussed. Participants in this course are introduced to a design thinking model in analyzing the socio-economic issues found in the communities. In addition, the participants are required to work in a multi-cultural team for this analytical project, by which communication, leadership and collaboration skills as well as open minded, respectful and cultural awareness attitudes have been employed. 
 
Apply online now until March 15. Scholarship will be awarded in the form of partial course expense waiver in the amount USD 1,000 from a total course expense of USD 2,800 for some selected applicants who have been admitted to the program based on eligibility, diversity of participating universities and field of study as well as statement of purpose. Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowships
The  Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship Program  provides opportunities to doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. The program is designed to deepen research knowledge and increase the study of modern foreign languages, cultural engagement, and area studies not generally included in U.S. curricula. 

Program Features
The institutional project period is 18 months. Students may request funding for a period of no less than six months and no more than 12 months. Funds support travel expenses to and from the residence of the fellow and the country or countries of research; maintenance and dependent allowances based on the location of research for the fellow and his or her dependent(s); an allowance for research related expenses overseas; and health and accident insurance premiums. Projects may focus on one or more of the following geographic areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the United States and its territories).
 
Eligible Applicants
Institutions of higher education (IHEs) in the United States are eligible to apply for grants under this program. As part of the application process, students submit individual applications to the IHE. The IHE then submits all eligible individual student applications with its grant application to the U.S. Department of Education. A student is eligible to receive a DDRA fellowship from their IHE if he or she
  • is a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States;
  • is a graduate student in good standing at an IHE;
  • is admitted to candidacy in a doctoral degree program in modern foreign languages and area studies at that institution when the fellowship period begins;
  • is planning a teaching career in the United States upon completion of his or her doctoral program; or
  • possesses sufficient foreign language skills to carry out the dissertation research project.
