Transition Process Update

Faith Church is in the midst of an exciting time of self-reflection and possibilities, a time when the congregation can explore its identity and mission apart from any particular clergy person. As your Interim Rector, I am here to provide both spiritual leadership and practical guidance for the church staff and volunteers. I am also supporting the Vestry as they work on the charges given them in this process by the Canons of the church and as outlined by our Bishop. Canon Andrea is the Consultant who will train and support the Vestry and the committees once they are formed.

In the next weeks, the Vestry will discern lay members of the congregation for three roles: a Chaplain, the Profile Committee and the Applicant Review Committee. All who serve in these roles will be appointed. There is not an application process to serve in these roles.
·          The Chaplain will provide spiritual support for the committee members.
·          The Profile Committee (PC) will gather information from the congregation and then will write both a Parish Profile and narrative answers to be included in the online profile of the congregation. These documents will be available to all Rector applicants and will capture the spirit of this congregation as well as including pertinent data. The committee’s work will take place over the next months and into the Fall.
·          The Applicant Review Committee (ARC) will review applications provided to them by the Diocese. Their work will begin after the Parish Profile has been published and after a period when applications will be received, reviewed, and vetted by Canon Andrea and Bishop Megan. This work will take a number of months and will extend into early Summer 2020.

This is a process of discernment and is unlike a search to fill a corporate job position. The process is necessarily one in which confidentiality is very important. The Vestry, the Chaplain and all Committee members will make a commitment to this confidentiality. This is about protecting the privacy of potential applicants, it is not about secrecy. I encourage everyone to resist the temptation to ask for specific information like names once the process is underway.

We each have a role in this time of transition and discernment. Prayer is at the heart of this discernment. And we are all called to that prayer!

God’s Peace,
Pastor Liz

We are in Transition

Visitors are always welcome at Faith Episcopal Church!

To serve you better, we invite you to fill out the chartreuse colored visitor information card, found in the Sunday handout material.

Faith Episcopal is a congregation in transition; as recently, our rector accepted a call to the Diocese of Indianapolis. This is a very exciting time for our Parish, as we are examining where we came from, whom we are and where we are to go.

We completed the first milestone in our transition, to find a new rector, by accepting the Bishop’s appointment of the Rev. Elizabeth (Liz) Armstrong as our Interim Rector. Rev. Armstrong will be presiding over our services on Sundays and providing pastoral care and performing the administrative duties of Rector. Rev. Sonya Reichel will also preside and preach at some of our services. For diversity, we hope to arrange for other priests and deacons to participate and preach at our services.

Rev. Liz and the Vestry will be consulting and working with the Rev. Canon Andrea McMillin, Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of Northern California, in developing the protocols for forming the Profile/Search Committee(s).
-           The Profile: We will survey the congregation to assess who we are as a congregation; our priorities in serving Christ and how we can best fulfill our walk with Christ. The profile developed from the assessment will then be published to the Episcopal Church.
-           The Search: Qualified priests who respond to our profile will submit an application letter for rector with supporting résumé. After the vetting of the applicants by the Diocese and committees, a list of the top candidates will be developed for continued consideration until the Vestry prayerfully discerns to whom a call will be extended.

This transition process is intentionally lengthy so that we can fully and prayerfully process where we have come from, where we are and discern to where we are called, with intention to find the best leadership to guide us along our journey with God.

May God’s Grace be with you,

Brian Kennedy, Sr. Warden

Prayer for Transition

"God of all time and seasons, we give thanks for what you have done in our midst, and we listen together for what you are calling us to be and do. Help us to learn from the past and then release it. Fill us with hope, confidence, and vision for the future you are creating. Give wisdom and courage to our leaders, especially our interim rector Pastor Liz Armstrong, and the one who will become our new rector. We ask all this in the name of Jesus, who by your Spirit and through your Church, walks with us and bids us to lives of love and service. Amen."
