My childhood friend, Elizabeth, and her family visited last weekend. You may have seen them in church and wondered if I had a sister. My son will often pick her out as “mommy” when we look through old pictures! Unfortunately it rained all weekend and we spent most of our time watching kids race through the house and picking up after them. That gave us lots of time to talk and that is good for the soul. It is a lovely thing to meander from topic to topic covering siblings, parents, old adventures and lots of “remember whens...”. We laughed and hugged and talked about everything from the inane to the tender.
I read recently that friends are good for you.
Friends: Increase your sense of belonging and purpose, boost your happiness and reduce your stress, improve your self-confidence and self-worth, help you cope with traumas, such as divorce, serious illness, job loss or the death of a loved one, encourage you to change or avoid unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as excessive drinking or lack of exercise.
I was glad that your Vestry recognized a need around friendship. At their retreat, they decided to make “Relationship building” a priority for this calendar year. We will gather together simply to know one another better and have fun—look for events coming soon. It’s a wonderful thing to have such a diverse parish and getting together more can only be good for us. Don’t be shy. Please join in and share yourself—we can all use more friends.

A special thanks to our Sunday evening Aldi-loading-dock-food-movers! Many hands made for quick work and helped set the stage for our Family to Family meal packaging and giveaway events.

Tonight, Wednesday, February 20th
we will hold a Family to Family Grocery Ministry bag packing party,
with special guest, Bishop José McLoughlin.
There will be a Potluck dinner at 6pm and we will package grocery bags from 6:45pm-7:45pm.
*THIS EVENT WILL OCCUR AS SCHEDULED, EVEN IF WILKES COUNTY SCHOOLS CLOSE TODAY*
On
Saturday, February 23rd
, we will host a Grocery Giveaway from 10:00am-12:00noon. Volunteers are needed to greet our neighbors, distribute bags, and make and serve coffee and baked goods. Please contact Rachel in the office (or email stpaulscyfm@gmail.com) if you are able to bring baked goods on Saturday.
*Volunteers should arrive between 9:30-9:45am on Saturday.*
If you have a rolling cart or wagon, please bring it on Satruday for use in helping to load grocery bags into vehicles!

Vestry Meeting Summary 2.20.19
The Vestry (leadership team) met Sunday and began by discussing how heathy churches interact. We discussed direct communication, not triangulating and making sure that we are treating people with respect. We discussed gossip and how that hurts a parish and that gossip often comes at times of transition; we mentioned that gossip is often based on misinformation or a lack of information and encouraged ourselves to be aware of healthy ways to stop gossip.
The Vestry is charged with 3 main areas of concern: caring for the finances and as we always do, we received a financial report from our Treasurer; buildings and grounds and we received an update on the kitchen redo from our Jr. Warden and discussed opening our buildings for non-member weddings; and with care of the clergy. The Vestry discussed their stated priorities for the year: an articulated mission, creating a culture of adult learning, and building relationships. A question was asked about the process for moving the Priest-in-Charge to Rector. We do not have that information at this time, but have asked the Diocese to send it.

Genesis 45:3-11, 15
Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?" But his brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they at his presence.
Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Come closer to me." And they came closer. He said, "I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years; and there are five more years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, 'Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. You shall settle in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children's children, as well as your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. I will provide for you there--since there are five more years of famine to come--so that you and your household, and all that you have, will not come to poverty.'"

Jesus said, "I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
