Fauci “Visits” Georgetown

Students from the School of Medicine hosted Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, on May 4. Joining the students via Zoom, Fauci gave an update on COVID-19 and the “Opening Up America Again” guidelines before answering questions about students returning to clinic rotations, NIH research priorities and more. Glasscock Inducted as National Chair of AAMC Group on Business Affairs

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Business Affairs (GBA) inducted Mary Glasscock, MBA, GUMC senior associate vice president for business affairs and administration, as its 2020-2021 nat ional chair on May 8. The GBA advances administrative and fiscal management in academic medical institutions to support medical education, research and health care.

Alexandra L. Phelan, SJD, LLM, LLB, an assistant professor at Georgetown University Medical Center and a faculty member of its Center for Global Health Science and Security, writes that immunity passports “create an artificial restriction on who can and cannot participate in social and economic activities,” warning that this creates “a perverse incentive for individuals to seek out infection.”

 Georgetown University Medical Center, in collaboration with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, is conducting a study to test for antibodies in two groups of people with increased vulnerability to COVID-19: hospital workers and those with cancer.

Global health scholars have issued a clarion call about the needless loss of life expected because of a foreseeable prospect of “slow and inadequate access to supplies” to control COVID-19 in sub-Saharan Africa. They say what is unfolding now is similar to when lifesaving diagnostics and treatments came to the region long after they were available elsewhere.
