August 2019
LWR CERT News & Updates
That was certainly a wet July!
Hurricane Season is in full swing with another tropical disturbance approaching our state. Today's a great day to refresh and replenish your hurricane supplies.

News You Can Use and Other Interesting Tidbits
This is a test: The Federal Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with the FCC, will be conducting a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System on Aug. 7 at 2:20 PM. If conditions on the day of the test require the rescheduling of the test, a secondary test date is scheduled for Aug. 21.

Hurricane Preparedness: The last Hurricane Preparedness session of 2019 is set for Saturday, Sept. 14 from 9 - 10:30 AM at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall. This session serves as a prerequisite for the CERT Basic training course for new members. Current members are encouraged to attend as a refresher. Registration will close when we reach capacity. Click here for Sept. 14th details and registration . Invite your neighbors. Attending a Hurricane Preparedness session is the first step toward membership in LWR CERT.

Following County Curfews: CERT members will not be restricted from performing their disaster duties during a curfew as long as they have their County CERT ID badges, wear their CERT vests, are operating during daylight hours in our neighborhoods, and are conducting themselves in accordance with their training and policies.

Special Needs Registry: As a reminder, Manatee County offers a Special Needs Registry designed to assist residents who will require transportation or sheltering assistance if you need to evacuate because of a storm. Annual registration is required. Click here to register online.
2019 Activation Process - What you need to know
During Hurricane Irma, such a large number of our members either evacuated or went to shelters that it would have been impossible for the majority of our teams to activate if we had needed to do so.

As a result, LWR CERT has a new Activation Process. This new activation process identifies, shortly before the hurricane is expected to make landfall, what members will be available to activate after the storm.

Based upon that info, our Deployment Manager Phil Johnson will build teams and assign Incident Commanders to those teams. Some teams may have enough members to operate as usual, and many may not.

The means of obtaining this info from our members will be by text messages, and members need to opt-in to that system.
Summerfield CERT Teams Celebrate Summer

Team 10 Team Captains Teresa Reeck and Betty Drzal arranged a get-together of the Summerfield CERT teams on July 18 at MacAllisters Grill & Tavern on LWR Main Street. In addition to members of Team 10, members of Teams 8 and 9 were also invited along with non-member spouses. Before the event concluded, 26 had joined in. After a brief business meeting, the group enjoyed dinner and socializing with fellow CERT members.

Attending the event were Betty and Paul Drzal, Celia and Jeff Williams, Valerie Stafford-Mallis and her husband Sam , Patt and Mike Staley, Kim Wright, Tom Pratt and his wife Roxanne, prospective member Cliff Kaplan, Marty Stengle and his wife Marlene, Tim Sherer, Janis Ballard, Kris Hoekman and husband Joe , Paul Jackowski, Bert and Jane Zinkand, Teresa Reeck and husband Art , Lauri Mendoza, and Marilyn and Vic Kline. Member News and Members In The News
New Team Captain: Thank you to Bert Zinkland for agreeing to serve as Team Captain for Team #7. We appreciate you stepping up to lead your neighbors on this team of 9 members in Summerfield.

Around the Ranch - A Hurricane Preparedness presentation by Kay and Mark Marcus at the Lady of Angels Church in May was highlighted in the July 17 edition of Around the Ranch. LWR CERT member Matt Cangemi arranged the speaking opportunity. The June 17th edition also included a list of hurricane preparation tips which were attributed to LWR CERT.
Did you know...

During severe thunderstorms and threatening weather, Lakewood Ranch CERT personnel routinely monitor weather conditions through the National Weather Service and other sources. We are also kept informed by Manatee County Emergency Management concerning possible severe weather threats, and we are alerted if the County Emergency Operations Center is activated.
There's an App for That
Critical first aid information for your pet can be at your fingertips with the Pet First Aid app from the American Red Cross.

According to one reviewer, "This is a great guide for cat and dog basic first aid! While not a replacement for proper veterinary care, this app is very well done and easy to follow, full of useful info for dealing with a large variety of problems pet owners might face -- with not just facts, but also videos to guide you in performing emergency first aid properly."

The app has a place to store the phone number of your Emergency Vet, a way to find pet friendly hotels, and quizzes to test your pet first aid knowledge.

Available on both Android and Apple.
