UBC Recreation Centre - Vote Now
UBC has an important vote with the AMS elections for a new fitness and recreational building for students. Squash
BC wants to encourage all UBC students to vote
YES.
If the vote goes through for a recreation centre it opens up the door to an opportunity for
SquashBC and the Jesters to work with UBC to build squash courts. The Jesters have worked tirelessly for many years to get squash at UBC.
Vote
Here. Please spread the word to any friends or friends of friends who are UBC students.
Remember to tell them Vote YES for a new student fitness and rec building at UBC Now (ends
this Friday March 10th at
5pm)
Athletic Space
It's about time we expanded the fitness and rec space on campus to accommodate more than a small family of ants. The AMS has been back and forth with the university for the past year and have come up with a solution in the best way we could pull together. A new fitness building for students paid half by students and half by UBC.
The Question:
Do you support the AMS establishing a graduated fee ("The Fee") to contribute to the construction of a student fitness and recreation building at UBC Vancouver?
BC Tournaments - Recap
SquashBC is proud of our athletes that competed in the various provincial events that have occured in the past month. Below are writeups from each of these events. We thank the Host Clubs, Tournament Chairs, Officials, Volunteers, and Sponsors for providing quality events. These types of events cannot happen without these partners. Congratulations to all in making these great competitions!
2017 BC Provincial Closed Championship
Tournament Chair, Justin Todd and the Host Club Vancouver Lawn and Tennis Club put on a great tournament February 22 - 26. The new courts at the Lawn saw lots of action as the club was a buzz the entire time.
Tournament Official Christine Yap and her team of referees were kept busy. Display of endurance and raw determination made for incredible matches throughout the tournament. Thank you to the Tournament Chair, host club, volunteers and sponsors for a great competition.

BC Junior Closed Championship
Hollyburn once again played host to the event on March 3-5 and this year welcomed 130 entrants in gold and silver events which is the highest total participation in many years at the BC Junior Closed Champs.
The event kicked off with an unexpected fire alarm only minutes into the first matches. After that it was smooth sailing both on and off court. Sunday highlights came from a handful of excellent close finals in all draws.
Players came from Revelstoke, all over Vancouver Island, and all parts of the lower mainland. Great to see new clubs being represented at the BC Junior event.
Players really appreciated the prizes, headphones and Bluetooth speakers for all event winners, runner ups and consolation winners. Having all matches in one location created a great buzz from start to finish. There were approximately 80-100 on hand to watch the Sunday finals. Thank you to Tournament chair and committee, volunteers, host club, sponsors.

The BC Doubles Championships was held March 1-5 at the new Vancouver Lawn squash facility. For the second week in a row, Justin Todd ran a great tournament. There were some great 5-game matches including Glen Sorensen/John King almost upsetting eventual winners Jamie Bleay/Mark Heaney in the Men's 50+. Ruth Castellino paired with Rachel Au to win the Women's Open against Emma Parke/Karyn Trombley. Ed Berwick and Laura Ramsey were finalists in the Mens 60+ and lost to eventual winners, Brian Covernton/Malcolm Moore who played steady all weekend long without losing a game. In the Men's 40+ Brian MacFarlane/David Goldsmith had a hard fought match with two games ending with a nail-biting 15-14 over finalists Mike Dodds/Mike Carrier.
The dinner Saturday was delicious and the dancing led by Pam Brunswick was rocking fun! Thanks to Justin Todd for organizing a great tournament. Thanks to Greg Desaulniers, the Tournament Official and the many volunteers that helped out. Click
