Happy new year and welcome to 2018! I always think "Visit the library more" makes a great new year's resolution, don't you? I recently discovered that my family has borrowed over 4,000 items from our libraries since 1999. Can you imagine how much we would have spent if we had to buy or rent all those items? Just think of all the money you can save by using your library!
We're back to our usual schedule here, with regular events like our monthly movie night, coloring, book club, and more. Read on for our schedule and as always, when you think of things you'd like to learn about at your library be sure to let us know! We're always on the looking for new ideas.

Surviving Winter
Ever wonder how animals can make it through the extreme cold temperatures we've been having? Join naturalist Licia Johnson from the Discovery Center as she presents "Surviving Winter: animal survival strategies,"
tomorrow, Wednesday, January 3 at 12:00pm at the Mercer Library. This program is part of the Discovery Center's Brown Bag lecture series, and is free and open to all.

Mercer Memories Lab
The Mercer Library is setting up the "Mercer Memories Lab" to allow you to capture family photos, videos, sound recordings, and other treasures and transfer them to digital copies to preserve for the future.
Our new lab will feature a computer with Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements for basic photo and video editing, a scanner for photos and slides, VHS to DVD converter, video transfer equipment, LP and cassette to CD converter, and more. We will also provide instruction and training documents to teach the community how to use this equipment, and hope to be able to use this to gather more local history materials from our residents and long-time visitors, too.
The total cost of the project will be approximately $2800, and we hope to have the new lab operating with initial equipment by the end of January. January Events
Our Book Club meets on January 9 at 1:00pm for a "Pick an Era" cookbook discussion. Select an era from the past and find a cookbook with recipes from that era that you can discuss. If you like, prepare a recipe from the book to share with the group. All are welcome, and cooking is optional! If you need help finding a cookbook, stop by the library.
Join us for our monthly Movie Night on January 10 at 6:30pm, when we'll be showing the 2017 critically-acclaimed movie "Dunkirk," 106 minutes, rated PG-13 for "Intense war experience and some language." The movie is free and we'll provide the popcorn, too! [Please note: this is a schedule change from information that was in the latest FYI Northwoods newspaper.]
Tech Tuesday is your chance to get one-on-one technology help with library director Teresa Schmidt. Drop in with your gadgets and your questions on Tuesdays, January 9, 16 and 30 at 2-4pm. This service is available first-come, first-served, but if you can't make it on Tuesdays give us a call to set up an appointment for another time.
Fe University has a great schedule of courses planned for their Winter 2017/2018 semester. Courses that will be held in Mercer include a class on the history of early Christianity in the British Isles, Tracking the American Marten, and Russian history. For information, visit www.feuniversity.org.
700 Series: Local antiques dealer Frank Kopecky has shared a beautiful collection of folk art with the library this month. Stop by to take a look at the wide variety of art and furniture he has on display.
Coffee & Coloring is back to its normal schedule on the 2nd and last Fridays of the month. This is a relaxing program for adults: bring your own paper craft project or we'll provide colored pencils and coloring sheets for you.

New DVD Policy
We've recently updated our DVD lending policies here at the library. Most movies loan for one week, but you can now borrow movie and TV series sets for two weeks.
You can be sure to see all the latest films by getting on the wait list before they are released. Give us a call or stop by to learn more - we want to make sure you can get the titles you want!

Don't forget the more "traditional" parts of our library service, too:
- Check out up to 25 items including up to 5 DVDs at a time on your library card. Our collections include books, movies, books on CD, puzzles, board games, children's activity kits, a telescope, and more.
- We offer copying and fax services for a nominal fee.
- Use our Merlin library catalog to reserve and request items from our Merlin libraries.
- Check out Wisconsin's Digital Library and the "Libby" app for your smartphone or tablet to download books and audio books.
- Log in to Badgerlink.net with your library card for access to auto repair manuals, consumer reports, digitized newspapers, databases, genealogy resources, and more.
- Don't hesitate to ask for help with finding the materials you need - we're glad to show off all the many resources available through your library!
