Historical Tidbit:

The East Bridgewater Fire of 1893

"The biggest disaster to ever hit East Bridgewater occurred on May 21, 1893, when a fire wiped out the Old Colony Iron Foundry and Machine Shop, leveled the Methodist Church and two large warehouses. The loss was estimated at $100,000.00.

At one time 15 of the buildings were on fire. The cause of the fire was said to be the flying spark from the engine of the locomotive. The air was filled with burning embers, said the report. The hose company from Elmwood responded quickly, as did Brockton and Bridgewater.

It was said that had the fire broken out in the evening rather than in the afternoon, the entire town would have been destroyed."

Four DIY Things You Can do to Lower Your Energy Bill This Summer
Here are four low-cost, but high-impact changes you can make to save money while making your home comfortable.
1.Clean Your Window Sills: A few seasons worth of dirt and soot can build up and prevent your windows from closing all the way, thus creating a draft. Even a little air getting in through the windows can make your AC less efficient and raise your electric bill. This is an easy fix with just the use of a cleaning spray and some paper towels, it may even make a good chore for the kids to do!
2.Install a Door Sweep: Often times air leaks occur under the door leading from the house to the garage because these doors are often not sealed as tightly as doors leading directly outside says Energy Star. Installing a door sweep costs around $10-15 and can be attached using a drill and screws.
3.Caulk Your Windows: Window air leakage can be reduced by applying a continuous bead of caulk around the window trim where it meets the wall, at the mitered joints of the trim, and between the trim and the frame. Make sure the caulk is intended for indoor use and can be painted.Caulk costs around $3-5 and is best to go slow due to the process being messy.
4.Check Your Ducts: Ducts are used to distribute AC and heat throughout houses with forced-air systems "In typical houses, about 20% of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts." This is an easy fix with just a roll of tape.

On June 22nd, the Class of 1954 held its 65th reunion at the Standish Grille in East Bridgewater. There were 50 in our graduating class, but half have passed on. There were nine of us in attendance plus many invited guests. We have had a reunion every five years with the exception of 1969. On Saturday we enjoyed music provided by Carol Owen's daughter, Anne Rich, on her guitar and keyboard. Delicious meals of Chicken Supreme and Baked Haddock were served by Kathy and Stacey. We enjoyed a time of reminiscing and planning for our 70th in 2024!

American Legion Post 91 Celebrates
100 Years of Service
On July 7th 1919, the American Legion Fred Bates Morse Post 91 of East Bridgewater was chartered. The Post was named after the town's first resident lost in action during World War I, Fred Bates Morse.

Since then, the American Legion Post has worked hard to better our community, whether it be awarding scholarships to graduating high school students, supporting boys and girl scout troops, or holding ceremonies for members who have passed on. The American Legion Post has certainly kept themselves busy. The Post looks forward to the next 100 years of great service.
Next business meeting of the American Legion Post 91 will be held Tuesday, Sept 17th,7:30-10:30p at Town Hall, 175 Central Street, East Bridgewater.
