THIS SUNDAY'S SERVICE
EMILY MCKOWN AND YRUU YOUTH
Sunday, February 23 at 10:15 a.m. in Sanctuary

Listen up UUCUC! The service February 23, 2020 is being carefully crafted by our Young Radical Unitarian Universalists (YRUU). These high schoolers have chosen to speak on the topic of listening. How does our culture listen? How does what we regularly listen to define who we are? How does listening build empathy? Bring your open ears, hearts, and minds to gather the wisdom of YRUU on listening.
HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND

On Sunday, Feb. 23 we will enter the final week of our Generosity campaign. In the words of Rev. Florence Caplow, “ This is a crossroads, a moment to dream big and make a leap to a new way of sharing ministry, where we can shine even brighter for each other, for this community, and beyond… Let’s Leap … TOGETHER!”

UPCOMING SUNDAY SERVICES
REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW
Sunday, March 1 at 10:15 a.m. in Sanctuary

Our Soul Matters theme for March is “Wisdom”. Wisdom is a word we don’t hear so much these days, but great thinkers from Plato onward have recognized wisdom as one of the virtues that lead to a good life. How do we find sources of wisdom, in the world or in our own hearts, especially in these confusing and fast-paced times? We will celebrate the quiet power of wisdom. This is also Pledge Sunday, the end of our four week Generosity Campaign to support our church and programs for the coming year.

From the February 16, 2020 Service

A joy from Anonymous
Joy for the joy that Austin Cody brings to leading the choir.

A joy from Sam Beshers
Our dog, Bingley, spent five minutes rolling in the snow, when the thermometer read 4 degrees Fahrenheit.

A joy from AJ and Steve Herzog
We are so grateful to this community for the warm and enthusiastic reception they gave the St. Olaf Choir and our son, Jonah, when they performed at Krannert this past Tuesday. We saw so many members of this church there. Jonah definitely noticed and so did his choir mates. So much joy! This church played a big role in Jonah's musical development - from children's choir to youth choir and coffee houses. We're very grateful!
SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
UUCUC Shared Offering.  Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive half of our weekly Sunday plate collections, designated checks written to UUCUC with organization's name written in the memo line, cash envelopes designated for "Shared Offering" within the specified month and on-line donations through our  GIVE WEBPAGE .

During the month of February, we will support Salt & Light Ministries. Salt and Light Ministries which "strives to empower individuals towards lasting change by affirming their dignity." The youth of UUCUC voted to nominate salt and light because of their revolutionary model for meeting basic needs of low-income families in C-U, while also providing a dignified work exchange opportunity. GIVING AND GRATITUDE
LEADERSHIP CIRCLE UPDATE!

The response to the Leadership Circle invitation has been extraordinary! As of today, we have  one hundred  members of the Leadership Circle who have either committed to raising their pledge by at least 15-20% and/or have committed to make a one time donation to the Ministerial Set Aside Fund, and the Fund has $60,425 of committed donations! Thank you to all who have been inspired to be part of this initiative. If you would like to join the Leadership Circle, sign-up online by  pledging  and/or  donating  to the Set Aside Fund. Prefer paper? Mail or bring your pledge form and/or check to church.
IMMIGRATION JUSTICE TASK FORCE ALLOCATES FUNDS TO CU-FAIR

Good news! With funding from Social Action, the Immigration Justice Task Force just allocated $1000 to CU-FAIR, one of our immigration partners. Half will be used for CU-FAIR’s legal defense fund. The other $500 is our contribution to the Family Emergency Assistance Fund, which helps immigrant families facing a financial crisis. IJTF is also part of the decision-making process, along with other community partners.
RECENT SHARED OFFERINGS

In January 2020, Champaign County Bailout Coalition was selected to be the shared offering. The UUCUC congregation contributed a total of $2,521.18 that month!

No one should be in jail because they can’t pay their bond. Donations made to the January Shared Offering will allow CCBC to pay the bail amount of $500 or less for people unable to afford it. Approximately 70% of people in our jails at any given time have not been convicted of any crime. Many of those individuals could be released, but they can’t afford to pay the bail amount that the Judge has set. CCBC believes that jail is the worst place that a person can be.
THERESA BENSON AND SCOTT GODLEW WEDDING

On February 8, Theresa Benson and Scott Godlew were married. To celebrate the union, several members/friends made a donation to UUCUC: Thank you for your generosity and congratulations Theresa and Scott!
