Nevada Childhood
Lead Poisoning Prevention Program
The Nevada Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (NvCLPPP) aims to eliminate one of the most preventable environmental outcomes in children – lead poisoning.
Many people think that lead exposure is not a problem in Western states like Nevada because much of our housing is newer. However, older homes exist in our state, and lead exposure may come from many other sources, such as imported spices, toys, jewelry, cultural items, and parents whose occupations or hobbies may bring lead into the home.
Lead exposure can result in lower IQ and impulse control, slowed growth and development, and hearing and speech problems. Often times a child may have no symptoms. Therefore, it’s important that children get tested at 12 and 24 months, or at least once before they turn six. We want all children to have the opportunity to start school ready to learn and to succeed.

Flu Shot Facts & What It Means If You're Pregnant
In 2017-2018 an estimated 900,000 people were hospitalized and almost 80,000 deaths occurred in the U.S. from the flu and flu-related conditions.
Getting the flu can cause serious problems when you are pregnant. Even if you are generally healthy, changes in immune, heart, and lung functions during pregnancy make you more likely to get severely ill from flu. Pregnant women who get flu are at high risk of developing serious illness, including being hospitalized.

Lactation Counselor Training Course & CLC Certification Exam
July 29th-August 2nd 2019 I 8:15am-4:30pm
Las Vegas
The Lactation Counselor Training Course is a comprehensive, evidence based, breastfeeding management course with a strong focus on clinical counseling and assessment skills. Participants build on theoretical foundations to gain practical skills and verify competency as well as optimizing their ability to solve basic and complex clinical breastfeeding issues. This college level course prepares participants for professional work in the hospital, in public health, and community settings.

The Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) is the premier national certification in Lactation Management for the United States. CLC certification holders have demonstrated competence in the clinical lactation skills and knowledge that are essential to help breastfeeding families. CLCs can provide assessment, counseling, and interventions for optimal and sub-optimal breastfeeding. The CDC refers to CLCs as lactation professionals who are members of the health care team (2014 Breastfeeding Report Card). Research has shown that the education required of CLCs prior to certification is associated with improved breastfeeding exclusivity and duration. The Certified Lactation Counselor
Certification is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) based on the ISO/ IEC 17024 standard.

Around 3,500 babies die from sleep-related deaths every year. We can change those numbers by having better conversations with caregivers about what safe sleep recommendations look like and why following them can save a baby's life.

To help support and spark those conversations, take this video quiz that reviews recommended safe sleep practices. The quiz is not a test; instead, it is an interactive teaching tool to help health professionals engage families in conversations about what safe sleep looks like and why it is important.

Go Before You Show
The Nevada Statewide Maternal and Child Health Coalition, in coordination with Washoe County Health District, is launching the Go Before You Show® campaign statewide. The mission of Go Before You Show® is simple -- to affect social awareness and create long term change by promoting the importance of women seeing a doctor early in their pregnancy to help improve their health and the health of their baby. Women are encouraged to see a doctor early if they think they might be pregnant or before their twelfth week of pregnancy.

The coalition has flyers to distribute to the community, if your organization wants flyers contact Tasha Choi by email   Jacqueline.Kennedy@DignityHealth.org   or call 702-616-4970.

To achieve this goal, they have partnered with many of the treatment centers in the state that treat pregnant women struggling with addiction. Overall, for State Fiscal Year 2013, SAPTA funded 22 treatment organizations, providing services in 68 locations throughout Nevada. Together, these providers had 11,907 treatment admissions. Sober Moms, Healthy Babies provide many resources if you are looking for help or if you are wanting to help someone else.
