Ning Quan, Ph.D., a neuroscientist at
Florida Atlantic University’s Brain Institute and
Schmidt College of Medicine discovered that hyaluronic acid may be the key in how an immune signal moves from the blood stream to the brain, activating the brain’s resident immune cells, the microglia. Findings from this study have important implications for better treatments for stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, as well as head injuries.

Plato Journal recently published a dossier of selected papers from the 2018 conference edited by Nicholas Baima Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy at FAU's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and Sophia Stone, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy at Lynn University.

The
John Nambu Memorial Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program
Student presentations
were held Friday, July 19. Nine talented students showcased their summer research projects. REU offers full-time research opportunities with stipend support for FAU undergraduates. Established in the memory of the late Dr. John Nambu, Professor in the Biological Sciences Department, the program provides undergraduates an opportunity to perform cutting-edge research in neuroscience and behavior-oriented labs. Congrats to this year's scholarship recipients: Liza Lanzon, Amanda Rauch, Isis Sweeney, Ian Gaudet, Gary Drotleff, Alaina Tillman, Ryan Sobel, Omar Avila and Dayana Torres.

Florida Atlantic University's
Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College welcomed new students. The college held
SOAR (Student Orientation, Academic, and Registration) for nearly 180 incoming owls and their families during two sessions. WHC SOAR is a holistic experience that introduces future owls to the Wilkes Honors College faculty, staff, and current students. FAU President John Kelly, Ph.D., provided words of encouragement to prepare the students for a successful start to their academic career at FAU.

OLLI Blue Danube Student Cruise

Students of
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at FAU Jupiter embarked on an exciting adventure with Jeffery Morton, Ph.D., a professor of political science, this past June. They cruised on a riverboat along the Danube river, from Prague to Budapest, enjoying port tours and destination and foreign policy lectures presented by Dr. Morton. This summer's educational excursion was an opportunity to expand the offerings of the OLLI at FAU Jupiter curriculum, and additional excursions will be added to the program in the future.
