Writing and mental health have long been associated in the popular imagination, with images of eccentric geniuses, alcoholics, and poets in the attic. Mental health is also often portrayed in literature, especially in memoirs and essays, not to mention numerous self-help books. But are those popular associations and depictions accurate? When it comes to writing about addiction, depression, anxiety, attention, and happiness (and everything in between), how can writers avoid stereotypes and get to the truth of the matter?

How to Write (or Write About) When Everything Goes Wrong

Allie Pleiter kept her writing career up and running during the serious illness of her son as well as several other life challenges. In this class, Pleiter shares practical strategies for not only protecting your creativity and productivity when calamity threatens to strangle your muse, but deciding whether to speak or write about your experience. The class will cover strategies for working toward calm and gratitude, communication with the various groups in your life, figuring out the difference between writing as a coping mechanism and writing for an audience, and wrapping your head around revision of emotional first drafts.
Registration closes Tuesday, February 19, at 5 p.m. CST. Everyone who registers will have access to the class recording for one week.

Strengthening Characters by Revealing Their Hidden Truths

In the first draft of a manuscript, writers are getting to know their characters, who can surprise, excite, and even disappoint with their choices. By learning these characters' motivations, their hidden shames, their standing in their communities, we can create more authentic scenes and maximize structural efficiency and emotional efficacy. This class will focus on learning who our characters are and how we as writers reveal them to our readers.

The three-act-structure has been used in screenwriting for decades, and it can be just as useful for novels. Thinking about an "inciting incident," "turning points," and a "rock bottom revelation" can help writers create an outline before they begin a manuscript or sort out writer's block after they've begun. Participants will leave this class with an outline or a structure format to consult during revisions.
To illustrate 3-act structure, Carolyn will discuss the Harrison Ford film Witness. Students are recommended to watch the film or remind themselves of its plot before class.

Joe Giordano's (Austin) third novel, Drone Strike, an Anthony Provati Thriller, will be published by Rogue Phoenix Press on April 15. Karim's family is killed by a U.S. drone strike in Iraq, as collateral damage. ISIL recruits him for a terrorist attack on the U.S., and only Anthony Provati can stop him. An Accidental Cuban, will be participating in an author's panel at Malvern Books on March 17 at 7 pm with authors Joy H. Selak and Myra Hargrave McIlvain. She will read from her book and discuss how she discovered story in modern day Cuba.
