Bicycling Anyone? Flemington Creates Five Scenic Road Tours

FLEMINGTON, N.J
. – As the warm spring weather brings more and more people outdoors, Flemington Community Partnership has designed five invigorating bike tours of the surrounding countryside for cyclists of all ages and skill levels. Ranging up to 21.2 miles, the rides feature lush vistas along scenic farm roads, over rolling hills and through the borough’s historic downtown. Each bicycle tour also includes an online map and a pit stop for breakfast, lunch or a quick beer at a local establishment that is “rider-friendly.”
Bob King is an avid cyclist and owns of one of those stops, Lone Eagle Brewery on Stangl Road. “I’m a big supporter of this effort and am looking forward to getting some time in the seat,” says the man who generally cycles two or three times a week. The Lone Eagle Brewery has bicycle racks and will be hosting monthly rides in the summer.
“We want people to discover that Flemington is the epicenter of Hunterdon County’s world-class biking universe,” said Ann Meredith, Executive Director of Flemington Community Partnership, “so our businesses are extending a warm, bike-friendly welcome to all serious and recreational cyclists.”
“I think this area is fabulous,” said Carol Harris of V5 Cycles. “The roads are spectacular. I live in Pennsylvania, and I still ride quite a bit here in Hunterdon County.”
The idea for the bike tours started when Tim Bebout, owner of the bed and breakfast Main Street Manor, had some guests who were looking for bike routes from the inn. “The Hunterdon County area is so beautiful that a bike tour seemed like an obvious need – and Flemington is at the center of it all.” He even offers free suitcase delivery to riders who start from his inn and end up at a Bucks County B&B.
Since May 14-18 is Bike-to-Work Week in Hunterdon, cyclists who want to meander to (or from) work that week – or at any other time of the year – now have a new set of options, which are available on

. Here’s a quick outline of the rides:
Bonetown Ride
at 5.3 miles is a good way to get started after the long winter. It offers a breathtaking view of Flemington from Bonetown Road before heading downhill. The suggested post-ride brunch is at Grateful Bites, where all the proceeds support the “differently-abled” in job sampling, training and employment.
Up, Up and Away
is a 6.7 more challenging ride that winds around downtown Flemington to the idyllic Walnut Brook before a hearty climb and barreling descent, with a final stop at Lone Eagle Brewing.
Farmland Ride
, at 21.2 miles and 1,300 feet of elevation gain, is not for the faint of heart – but it’s a scenic route, where an occasional bison may be spotted near Sandbrook Headquarters Road. More hills, and then it’s back to Bluefish Grill and Factory Fuel Co. for a tasty meal or espresso to go.
Family-Friendly Neighborhood Ride crisscrosses Flemington borough’s backroads and is a create-your-own adventure before picking up a salad or sandwich at Garden State Salad in town.
Clover Hill Out and Back
, an 11.5-mile ride, is for the more seasoned road cyclist. It includes a circle tour of Clover Hill Park that features great views of the Raritan River and farmland mixed with suburban neighborhoods. Theresa’s Café downtown is the final stopping point for gourmet sandwiches, burgers, soups and chili, with gluten-free options as well.
