Be a Rainbow in Somebody's Cloud

By: Adrianne Finley Odell
Poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou was fond of saying, “Be a rainbow in somebody’s cloud.” Over the weekend, following my sharing of news to the community of the health issues of our long-time teacher and colleague, Mrs. Wunder, I received an outpouring of support from students, parents, alumni, and parents of alumni-- all who felt compelled to reach out to show the love to Mrs. Wunder who has shown so much love to students over the years. When there have been clouds, Mrs. Wunder has certainly been our rainbow. She must be feeling all of the love that is pouring out from our community because she is doing very well!

Mrs. Wunder is a standard-bearer for us at Roycemore. Beginning her tenure at Roycemore in 1974, her influence on the number of students she has worked with and the culture of our community has been profound. Her dedication is a model by which other faculty members shape their own tenure here...

All members of the Roycemore community are invited to partake in one or all of the community conversations planned for the coming weeks. These events will serve as a precursor to the work our school will be doing next year to launch a new strategic plan. We want every voice to be heard. Among the topics to be discussed are:

  • What does it take to understand the capacity of one’s potential?
  • What are the characteristics of schools and teachers that help students reach their full potential?
  • What are the skills that schools must be teaching students for the future?
  • What are the activities, experiences, and courses that are required for students to gain needed skills for the future?
  • What aspects of our program, schedule, facility, and partnerships do we need to re-think in order for this to happen?

Please consider attending one or more of the following events and RSVP below.

Tuesday, January 21, 5:30-6:45pm
Wednesday, February 5, 5:30-6:45pm
Thursday, February 20, 5:30-6:45pm
Lower School Book Club &
One Book, Read Together
The teachers in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade have organized a Lower School Book Club to celebrate family reading. We are asking families to read The Magic Misfits by Neil Patrick Harris together at home. Then, on April 22nd, we will gather as a community to participate in a book discussion, engage in fun activities, enjoy some treats, and even participate in some magic! New this year, our Fourth Grade students will be helping to host this event and will also be selling copies of the book for $7 each. Start reading now and we hope that all of you will join us in April for the discussion!
Save The Date:
State of the School
Preview Night
JST Expo
The annual State of the School presentation is coming up on January 30th. Head of School, Adrianne Finley Odell, and Board Chair, Tom Ellis, will share an update on where we are as a school and where we are heading.

Following the State of the School, Lower School families will get to enjoy Preview Night . This is a chance for parents to visit the classroom where their child will next year, meet the teacher, and hear about all the exciting curriculum, projects, and activities that their student can look forward to next year. Fourth grade families will get a chance to meet with Middle School faculty to learn what they can expect next year for their children.

We will also be hosting the annual JST Expo (formerly known as the JST Share) on the same evening. This will give all families - not just Upper School - a chance to see what the students worked on during their January Short Term projects. Topics for this year range from architecture, costume design, microbiology, African-American studies, and food blogging - just to name a few!
