WORD for the Week for July 28, 2019
Sixth Sunday After Pentecost
A 9-week worship series: The Gift of Wonder
Week 5
The Gift of Wonder:

This summer, get to know God in a new way. Experience The Gift of Wonder in our 9-week summer worship series beginning June 30.

Can you imagine a God who dances with shouts of joy, laughs when you laugh, loves to play, enjoys life, and invites us to join in the fun? In this series we will explore what it means to delight in God, to set our imaginations free, to return to the rhythm of life, to cultivate gratitude, and more.

Using the book The Gift of Wonder by Christine Aroney-Sine as our guide, every week we will try a new practice for opening ourselves to awe and wonder–to God. Spend the season deepening your wonder in God at Hennepin.
COME AND WORSHIP
Sabbath Beginnings – Sacred Journey – Traditional Worship
WORD for Sabbath Beginnings 8am
Scripture Text: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (NRSV)

Worship Leader: Rev. Dwight Haberman

Holy Communion : The theme for today is the Joy of Sabbath, which grows out of the subtitle of the book we are reading, “Delighting in God”.
“O Sabbath rest by Galilee, O calm of hills above, Where Jesus knelt to share with thee, the silence of eternity, Interpreted by love .”  Words written in 1872 + picturing the Sea of Galilee. Any words that still resonate today, any thoughts? If you cannot connect with these words, what words, images or experiences of Sabbath would bring you delight?
WORD for Sacred Journey 8:30am
Scripture Text:   Psalm 16 (The VOICE)

The Story: “The Joy of Sabbath”

The Joy of the Sabbath

Reflection: What is Sabbath? How can we recapture the rhythm of life that sustains life and brings joy and peace? Wayne Muller wrote a book a few years ago called Sabbath,  Restoring the Sacred Rhythm of Rest.    He includes this poem by Jane Kenyon which beautifully captures the essence of Sabbath rest. Take a few moments to reflect on this as you prepare for Sunday worship.

Let Evening Come

Let the light of late afternoon
shine through chinks in the barn, moving'
up the bales as the sun moves down.

Let the cricket take up chafing
as a woman takes up her needles
and her yarn. Let evening come.

Let dew collect on the hoe abandoned
in long grass. Let the stars appear
and the moon disclose her silver horn.

Let the fox go back to its sandy den.
Let the wind die down. Let the shed
go black inside. Let evening come.

To the bottle in the ditch, to the scoop
in the oats, to the air in the lung
let evening come.

Let it come as it will and don't
be afraid. God does not leave us
comfortless, so let evening come.

---Jane Kenyon
