Clubs across the province are participating in Women's Squash Week - September 15-22, 2018!

Since Squash BC announced this year's Women's Squash Week (September 15-22), clubs across the province have been getting on board and registering their events.

Women's Squash Week enables clubs and centres to promote the game of squash to women who are looking for a sport that is both a great way to get / stay fit and has a strong social component.

From Nanaimo to Nelson, Squash BC's member clubs are taking the spirit of Women's Squash Week to heart. They are opening their doors to women of all levels and are organizing events that introduce women to squash, promote social play and inspire women to reconnect on the court and off.
  • Nanaimo Squash Club will be allowing free drop-ins all week for Women! They are also offering a coaching clinic with round robin and free beverage in lounge for attendees. There will also be a draw for a 30-day membership!
  • Vancouver clubs are conducting events to support women squash enthusiasts and novice participants alike. Bentall Centre Athletic Club, will be holding an exhibition match, providing opportunities for skill development, game play and fun! Jericho Tennis Club is offering Intro to Squash, Round Robin and Reception. Spectacular Sun and Surf 2018

The
Jericho Tennis Club was in fantastic form and was able to show off its spectacular ocean-front views at its annual Sun and Surf tournament (Aug 15-19) before the smoke descended like a zombie apocalypse.

Richard Yendell and the Jericho team ran a great event. Little did participants know, but only three weeks before the tournament started, someone had broken into the club and set a fire in the squash court area; setting off the sprinklers and flooding two of the courts. The Jericho team worked tirelessly to repair the damage in time to run the tournament.  They did a wonderful job.

117 players enjoyed this year's zombie-themed competition: "Squash the Walking Dead". With solid registrations across the draws and participants from the U.S. and England mixing things up, the competition was lively and fierce.

Players relaxed their tired muscles in Jericho's newly renovated hot-tub, which was hopping with the pool-side DJ playing on Saturday afternoon. And the Saturday night social was wonderful with a banquet dinner, costume party and dancing.

The Women's Open final could be the start of a collegiate rivalry. Elena Wagemans (Seattle Athletic Club) who will be going to Stanford next year played Andrea Toth ( Sport Central ) who will be going to Princeton. After a see-saw battle, Elena managed to win it in the fifth.

The Men's Open Final pitted #1 seed Tristan Eysele (Pro who will be coaching at
Shawnigan Lake School next year) against #2 seed Matthew Toth (Sport Central) with Tristan winning it in the closely contested fourth game.

Jericho now looks forward to its November tournament, the Jericho Open, which will now include the $5k PSA world tour event (which had to be postponed from the Sun and Surf tournament due to the fire).

2020 Fund seeking Committee Members

Squash BC's 2020 Fund Committee is looking for people interested in joining the 2020 Fund Committee.

The 2020 Fund was established in 2000 by Squash BC to help protect the future of squash in British Columbia. As funding from government and other sources becomes less predictable, it is important to find alternative ways to ensure a sound financial future for the sport of squash.
The income accumulated through the 2020 Fund is used to promote the growth of the game through the development of junior squash. Distributions from the fund support grassroots development, expand the base of junior squash players and develop their long-term interest in the game.
If you are interested in being a member of the 2020 Fund Committee and wish to learn more about the role and responsibilities of committee members, please contact 2020 Fund Committee Chair, Andrew Lynn by email (ALynn@bcac1055.com)
Canada places 5
th at WSF World Junior Championships

Squash BC wishes to congratulate the 2018 Canadian Junior Men's Team for placing 5th at the 2018 WSF World Junior Championships (Chennai, India).

The team consisting of players Julien Gosset (ON), James Flynn (ON), Ryan Picken (BC) and George Crowne (ON), Head Coach Jonathan Hill and Assistant Coach/Manager Chris Hanebury were the #2 seeds (to the surprise of some in the international squash community - see article here) going into the tournament.

In the quarter finals the Team faced a determined US squad.
James Flynn was up first. Down 2-0, James made an incredible comeback to take his match 3-2 over Tiber Worth [8-11, 8-11, 11-2, 11-2, 11-6]. Up next was Julien Gosset who was having a phenomenal tournament thus far and was in position to secure Canada a spot in the semi finals. Up 2-1 and with match ball (10-6) in the fourth, Julien took a tumble. After injury time he took the court, but unable to move he quickly lost the next four points and was forced to retire injured. In the decider George Grown fought hard and after dropping the first two games came back to take the 3rd 11-5.  Canada has had an infinity for the 5-gamers in this tournament, so it looked like George was about to set it up for another exciting but nerve-wracking finish.  In the fourth, the boys traded points but ultimately it was USA's Thomas Rossini who would take the game and the match 3-1 [11-9, 7-11, 11-5, 12-10].

Ryan Picken (Shawnigan Lake School and Jericho Tennis Club) shares this:

The 2018 World Juniors in Chennai, India, was an eye-opening experience competing at the highest level in the world. It was such a privilege playing for Canada as part of a four-man team with our head coach Jonathan Hill and team manager Chris Hanebury. Team Canada placed fifth out of twenty-four countries that competed in the team event. The team was disappointed losing in the quarterfinals to the US, but came back strong to finish in the top 5 beating Pakistan and Malaysia. The individual event that happened a week earlier was a great result. I won my first two matches 3-0 then got matched up with the 3/4 seed in the round of 32 and lost in a very tight 3 games. When I look back from the past 3 weeks it has been an incredible experience getting a chance to travel the world and at the same time do what I love.

Obviously, the Worlds were exciting, but the quarterfinals were a heartbreaker for the Team. Jonathan Hill, the team's Coach, wrote a powerful email to the parents of the team members after this tough situation. We thought that our members would be interested in his message as we've all experienced these types of set backs (click here for message)

Hopefully Jonathon's message will help you overcome your squash challenges.

Congratulations to the team! We are so proud of you.

Officials... "Make it Official"
null

In preparation for the coming season, we will need referees from our squash community to ensure our competitions are played fairly, safely and in the positive spirit that we have all come to enjoy.

A few years ago, Squash Canada went through an officials' program (singles), database and website update which resulted in a mis-match between Squash BC's listed officials and those registered in the "official" Squash Canada Officials database. The database and website are maintained by Squash Canada and helps streamline the management of the officiating certification program.

To get back in alignment, we ask all certified officials to make their certification "official" by registering onto Squash Canada's Officials database:   www.squashcanadaofficial.com

Click on the 'register' link (top right) and complete the profile form.

Referees, please register today!
