Squash BC Board of Directors Nominations Process
Squash BC (SQBC) has started the nominations process for our Volunteer Board of Directors and Zone Representatives. We invite you to spread the word about both opportunities to your squash colleagues, friends, league participants, clubs and facilities.

Board of Directors

  •  player development
  •  membership engagement and growth
  •  resource development
  •  marketing and communication
  •  technical - officiating and coaching
As individual members and member clubs/facilities, this is your board and we encourage you to read the following link here for nominations and refer it to your squash friends and colleagues who may be interested in these volunteer roles.

Thank you for your continued support in developing squash in BC! Expression of interest should be submitted to executivedirector@squashbc.com
Deadline to apply: April 30, 2017. Thank you for your help in getting the word to potential candidates.

Squash BC Zone Representative Nominations Process

With the changes in the Squash BC By-Laws which were approved in January 2017, the role of Zone Representatives as we've known them in the recent past has changed as has the process for nomination. In the past, league organizers have been asked by SQBC to name a representative for their Zone. Same is
true this year, however, now a nominations form needs to be completed by the interested candidate and submitted to Squash BC for Board approval.

Zone Representatives are individual members who have been appointed by the Board to represent their zone and who have agreed to abide by and adhere to the Society's By-Laws, policies, procedures and rule. (By-Law 2.1 b) Zone representatives shall act as a liaison and represent the interests of the individuals in their zone keeping a broad view of the overall structure, operation and objectives of Squash BC and its membership with the intent of promoting and growing the squash in BC and communicating with members more effectively. They should work with the clubs/facilities, leagues, associations and events in their zone as well as with the Squash BC office and committees of Squash BC.
In addition Zone Representatives are expected to:
  • Provide a report on zone activities to each Annual and Special General Meeting.
  • Attend Annual and Special General meetings of Squash BC and have voting rights at those meetings. The cost of travel for the AGM will be covered by Squash BC. Typically this involves 2 face to face meetings for 1 day each in January and late May/early June.
  • Outside of the AGM, zone representatives will participate in 1-2 additional meetings via conference call over the course of the year to provide mutual support and share information.
The term for a Zone Representative is one year.

Typically Zone 6 - Vancouver Island has been split with a South and North Island representative each.Still suggesting the same thing.

Typically Vancouver Squash League has represented Zones 4 and 5 and identified one person to vote on behalf of both zones. The new By-Laws state that there needs to be someone identified for each zone.
Zone 4 Fraser River (e.g. Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Surrey, White Rock, New Westminster) AND
Zone 5 Vancouver Coastal (e.g. Sunshine Coast, Vancouver, North and West Vancouver, Richmond, Squamish, Whistler, etc.)

As members, this is your Zone representation and we encourage you to read the attached call for nominations here and identify your representative prior to       April 24th. Click on this link for more information and nominations form.

Thank you for your continued support in developing squash in BC! Nominations should be submitted to executivedirector@squashbc.com.

Deadline to apply: April 24, 2017
Best regards
Nancy Thompson - President, Squash BC

Last month, Squash BC asked for your support to vote YES in UBC's AMS elections for a new fitness and recreational building for students. We are happy to share that the referendum for the UBC Recreation Centre passed.

Squash BC would like to thank all who helped in supporting this referendum!
Commencement of construction is aimed for 2019.

Gerry Poulton Wins 5th US Nationals Title

BC's Gerry Poulton won his fifth United States National Singles title at last month's 106th National Singles Championships at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. Gerry was thrilled to win his fifth US title in the past six years: "It felt great to win the title again after losing last year, especially defeating Ned (Monaghan ) who is playing great this year." Ned Monaghan the #2 seed lost only one game leading up to the final. Monaghan started the final strong and was able to win the first game 11-7. Gerry stormed back to win the next 3 games in consistent fashion: 11-1, 11-8, 11-5 to win top honours in the 70+ division. Gerry's consistent play and superior fitness were impressive throughout the tournament as the first game in the final was the only game he lost in the entire tournament.

Gerry Poulton has become one of Canada's perennial champions at the top squash tournaments all over the world in the Masters category. Prior to his win in Philadelphia, Gerry's most recent victory on the international squash scene was winning the inaugural America Master's Games in Vancouver last August. Gerry also won the European Masters Championships in Nice, France in 2015.
Gerry is currently on his way to compete in the 2017 World Masters Games in Auckland, New Zealand, April 21-30. Then Gerry returns to Toronto to defend his title in the 70+ category at the Canadian National Championships. He will be competing for his eighth Canadian National title.

Squash BC is very proud of Gerry's accomplishments and wish him success in the upcoming World Masters and Canadian Championships.

Junior Pathways Events

The Junior Pathway program aims to attract younger squash players and keep them playing our great game for longer in an inclusive and fun environment. Designed to take youngsters from their introduction to squash, through to eventually competing in our Junior competitive events, the program has three stages and combines technical skill acquisition with cooperative or competitive play, depending on age and level. Check the Calendar of Events and sign up today.
