Matching Gifts for Memorial Garden...limited time offer

Thanks to a very generous offer from some members of the congregation ...any gift for the memorial garden that comes in between now and August 15 will be matched.

Our hope is still to have enough raised this year that we can get the hard scape (cement work) done yet this fall so we can start adding the plant material next spring.

Thank you for your generous support.

Did you know you can make a gift to Joy electronically (on your own from anywhere)

There are several ways you can give electronically for both your recurring gifts or one time gifts.

1) If you are at Joy,  you can use the giving kiosk (a tablet at the welcome desk ) and swipe your credit card.

2) You can access our webpage ( www.joy-church.org) from anywhere you have internet access and click on the online giving to set up or manage electronic gifts

3) you can download a free app called GIVE+ from wherever you get your apps which allow you to give from your smart phone. Like many apps.. .it will take a little effort on the front end (creating a password, entering some data, etc.)  but once it is set up you have simple one-click giving

New....don't miss some new summer activities for youth

It's Time to FILL THE BUS!

It's hard to believe but the 2019-2020 school year is just around the corner. As Joy Lutheran Church has in past years, we are again collecting school supplies for the Prescott School District. The "FILL THE BUS" donation box is located in the Narthex along with lists of needed supplies. Please consider donating to our community youth to give them a fresh start with new school supplies. Even if it's a box of pencils, every donation counts!
Summer Bible Study Retreat at Joy

All women of the Prescott Area Churches Association are invited to join our ecumenical sisters from the other churches in Prescott for the annual summer Bible Study Retreat. This year it will be held on Tuesday, July 30th, 8:30 A.M. to 12:00 Noon in the Joy Lutheran Church Fireside Room. Join with other Christian women in our community for the annual Summer Bible Study. All women are welcome!

The subject of this Bible Study is "For Such a Time as This -- Lessons from Esther." In this summer study, we'll explore the book of Esther-one of the latest writings of the Old Testament. While reflecting on the life of this young queen, her experiences in a king's court, and the challenge issued her by her adopted father, Mordecai, we will consider how God may be calling us to use our own voices "for such a time as this." We will be discussing about how our culture may challenge our faith, how God might be reminding us of our need to find our voices as we live out our faith, and how we can use our voices in our present circumstances.

Bible study leaders will be Mary Wolfe (Prescott UCC), Cheryl Demuth (St. John's UCC) and Diane Meyer (Joy Lutheran). Morning coffee and refreshments will be provided by Wilma Timm.

This Bible study was written by Kay Ward, a bishop of the Moravian Church who lives at Marquardt Manor, a Moravian retirement community in Watertown, Wisconsin. She continues to serve in ministry as a pastor to pastors and intercessor for the church. Before retiring from the staff of Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, she served in team ministry with her husband, Aden. Kay was the first woman to be elected a bishop in the 541 years of the Moravian Church.

Thrivent Update:

I invite all Thrivent members and Joy members who are interested in Thrivent membership to spend a few minutes with coffee and pastries in the fellowship hall after the July 28th 9:30 service. Thank you, Jim Flatz

2017 : 60 Action Team projects receiving $15,000 plus $3,093 Choice Dollars for a total of $18,093
2018 : 65 Action Team projects receiving $16,250 plus $4,018 Choice Dollars for a total of $20,268
2019 YTD : 35 Action Team projects receiving $8,750 plus $2,009 Choice Dollars for a total of $10,759

We are on pace to finish this year a little below last year and above 2017 levels with both Action Team projects and Choice Dollars. Summer months are always quite slow in both areas (as is giving in general) and all should pick-up starting in September. There are changes in Thrivent and Joy procedures that I would like to discuss with a brief meeting after the July28th service.

Sharing & Caring Hands

Joy will be preparing and serving a noon meal
for 250 - 300 homeless people in Minneapolis on Tuesday, August 27th.

Ice cream pails and cake pans are available in the Narthex under the sign-up table.
Also , help is needed on Mon. Aug. 26th to help Kelly prepare the food (9:00 a.m. - 12 noon).
All food donations need to be at the church by 9:00 a.m. on serving day (Tue. Aug. 27th).
Joy volunteers will be leaving Joy at 9:30 a.m. and returning by 2:00 p.m.
Please contact Kelly Poff at 715-262-4281 with any questions.

A love offering will be collected on Sunday, August 18th to help with food costs.
Thrivent (through their Action Team Project) has also provided $250 to help with our costs.

The church is not a building

The church is not a building, it is the people of God, wherever they are.  For many of us, our lives are more mobile and family commitments may find us traveling on the weekend.  So we have collected some resources to help you worship and be the church where you find yourself.

If you have access to WiFi the lots of resources available at your fingertips.  If you are trying to unplug and get away from electronics you just need to prepare a bit ahead of time to print some resources.

One size does not fit all.  If will be different if you have young kids or are on your own, so use what is helpful and adapt.  Worship doesn't have to be an hour on a Sunday morning, it can happen when you are gathered around a meal table, or around a campfire at the end of the day, but a few minutes of focused attention can make a big difference.

This summer we are trying a new weekly home devotion that you can view online or download to take with you.  It is called   Faith Formation Journeys  check it out

Fish Stories

Our Theme for our Wednesday Night Worship this summer is "Fish Stories"....so bring your stories to tell and we will be looking at stories from the Bible and involve fish.

It is an informal worship on Wednesdays at 6:30pm  about 1/2 an hour followed by hotdog and smore roasting.  We meet on the patio outside the kicthen (weather permitting)
Hope to see you there.

GREAT NEWS!!!  Tom Swanson Kidney Update...

Dear Friends and Family,

It is with great joy and thanksgiving I share this wonderful news! This August 19th, I will undergo a donated live kidney transplant from my cousin Mike Weiss. Mike and I have been close friends our entire lives, he's always been very giving, and one of the good ones. We are so grateful for Mike and his wife Cindy. The outlook for our transplant is very bright.

In March I asked for help with my health issues. Karen and I were totally blown away by the positive response we received by so many wonderful people. As news of my health needs were shared by many of you, we even started receiving offers of a kidney donation from across the country, including from people we've never met. They offered because they knew you and their love for you turned into grace for me.

Our entire family was lifted up by your prayers, calls, visits, texts, emails, cards, and love. This has all been overwhelming and emotional, and we don't feel we can ever do justice in showing our appreciation.

We are asking for continued prayers for a successful surgery and healthy recovery for my cousin.

To each and every one of our awesome family and friends, we love you and forever THANK YOU!

Sincerely,

Tom and Karen Swanson and Family

News from the Prayer Shawl Ministry

Thanks to the women who make knitted or crocheted shawls that are on the "Shawl Ladder" in the narthex. Recently, shawls have been made by Chris Stanke, Linda Wilson, Charlotte Burgeson, and Wilma Timm. Thanks, too, to Linda Wilson for making some crosses that can be given to people who'd like to carry them in a pocket as a reminder of Jesus' love for them. They can be found on the Prayer Shawl Ladder also. If you, or someone you know, is in need of a prayer shawl because of illness or other condition, please feel free to just take a prayer shawl from the ladder.

Smartphone?

If you enjoy the convenience of a smartphone there are a couple of apps you may want to consider;

One is the Give+ app (which is a free download wherever to get your downloads) w hich allows you to make a electronic gift from your bank account instead of swiping a credit card (the handlin g charges are significantly less, so more of your gifts gets to us).  You can us it for one time gifts or managed giving, and it is all integrated into your regular electronic  giving to Joy.  click here for instructions.

You also now have the ability to set up a member portal with our church database.  This portal can be made into an app so you can have instant access to your data (with the ability to make changes and give permissions, view the church photo directory, and
see and print your giving statement whenever you want). To create a portal, click here.  If you want to make your login into an app just check with the office.

WELCOME TO JOY!

Any Joy Member is welcome to staff the desk (no experience necessary ).

Sign up on the JLC Worship Service Helpers clipboard in the Narthex.
