Compassion Sunday
Sermon:  Who Do You Need to See?
Scripture:   Luke 7:36-50
From Mark ...
Some questions of Jesus can be quite haunting.  On the surface the question raised in this passage seems a simple one: " Do you see this woman ?"  It's nothing more than an action statement designed to get Simon, a Pharisee who's hosting Jesus in his home, to turn his head and look at the woman who, with tears and determination, wipes the feet of Jesus. But, as Jesus is apt to do, his question runs much deeper than that.  ' Do you see this woman ?' is him asking, " Do you see this person who has been dismissed by Rome and your theological doctrine as a nonentity?  Do you see this woman, nameless to all the men, defined as sinner, rebellious, unclean and of low moral wattage because men who idolize their gender have scandalized her humanity?  Do you see this woman? "  Jesus forces us to look where we do not want to look.  On this Week of Compassion focus Sunday, what else is Jesus calling us to see, truly see?  In these deep looks, we see something more. Perhaps we even see ourselves.
Week of Compassion Special Offering....
Week of Compassion is our Disciples' "first responder" outreach, answering the call to help in disaster around the world - and roughly 40 miles south of where you live.  When the May, 2019, tornado cut through Eldon and Jefferson City, Week of Compassion was there to offer assistance.  Discover how our donations were used to help many in Missouri, less than one year ago.
Special offering envelopes will be in worship bulletins this Sunday, or you can choose to make an online donation through your Realm account.

5 PM in The Loft...
Just for February and March, Harp & Healing has moved to the third Tuesday - we hope that you will join us in The Loft!
Compassionate Care Leave
There is a fullness and beauty to each and every season of ministry at Broadway. Coming off a long year and now a meaningful journey through Advent and Epiphany, and preparing for the depths of Spirit that find us during Lent, there is seldom time for one to step aside, reflect and attend to life's seasons that also call for focused attention. Our Personnel Committee, with affirmation of our Executive Committee, have extended a month of Compassionate Care leave to Rev. Nick Larson. Nick has accepted and will spend the month of March tending to his own spirit and needs in his personal life. Our staff team will rally to cover ministerial needs during Nick's absence. Please reach to our other ministers and staff during this time of leave. Your prayers of support are welcome and valued by Nick during this important month.
Coming Up...
Ash Wednesday Worship & Fellowship Meal
Broadway will join Christians around the world to commemorate Ash Wednesday on February  26.  Our worship will begin at 7 PM in the Sanctuary, and will include the imposition of ashes.
Preceding our worship service, join us in Fellowship Hall at 5:30 p.m. for a shared meal.  MOM's Catering will provide the meal, and donations will be gratefully accepted. Dinner will be served until 6:30 p.m.
Children's Church Begins March 1
Children's Ministry will begin our new Children's Church on Sunday, March 1, during the 11:15 p.m. worship service.  Children aged 4 though third grade are invited to gather in the Music Center for an hour of activities that will mirror the routine and content of what their families experience in "big church."
Volunteers will be needed for this new choice for Broadway's young children.  Please contact  Children's Ministry Coordinator Aimee McBride if you would like to help.
Reconciliation Book Study Groups Forming
Last Sunday afternoon, almost 150 people from more than a dozen churches gathered in the Broadway Sanctuary to hear Dr. Terrell Carter's story of his life and ministry.  His experiences as a black police officer in St. Louis and a minister serving predominantly white churches have given him a front-row seat to issues of race and culture.
Book discussion groups are forming now and will read Dr. Carter latest book, Healing Racial Divides.  Several Broadway groups are available, as well as groups meeting at other faith communities.
If you would like to participate in the discussion, please  email Don Day.
Broadway Hosts Needed
Our beautiful Sanctuary is used at times other than just Sunday morning - and one of the most frequent uses is for music performances and recitals.  Our Sanctuary is used so often that it has become apparent that we need a "Host" to be onsite, just to make sure that our lights are turned off and that no one puts a water bottle on the piano!  As a "thank you," our Hosts would be paid $25 for their time.  If you are interested in serving as a Host, you must be at least 18 years old, and be available for a short training prior to your first time to serve.  Please contact  Church Administrator Ingrid Luckenbill for more information.
Christianity and Transgender Theology
Along with several faith communities, Broadway is sponsoring a seminar on Christianity and Trangender individuals, February 21-22, at First Baptist Church.  Austen Hartke, a seminary graduate and transgender male, will lead us through his own story of transition, Biblical scholarship and study.  The seminar is free and open to the public.
KFRU's David Lile interviewed Austen on February 13.  To hear David's interview, please  click here.
Final Sunday to Register...
Register Now for 2020 Women's Retreat
You don't have to go on a bear hunt to find your registration brochure for the February 21-22, 2020 Women's Retreat - it is in your church mailbox!   You can also find a brochure at the Welcome Center, and what a coincidence - you can download one on our website or click here
This year's retreat will be held at Broadway, so no need to drive farther than church!  There are four attendance options available to fit even the most complicated schedule - so register soon and discover how women "bear" up for the challenges of life!

Attention Seasoned Spirits!
Broadway's Seasoned Spirits (formerly 60+) will kick off 2020 with a luncheon on February 24 at noon.  The featured speaker will be Nanette Ward of Stop Human Trafficking.  If you have not already responded to your your e-vite, please let Caren or Marcia know that you plan to attend.
If you would like to ride the Broadway Bus to the luncheon, please contact Ingrid at 445.5312.
Youth Mission Pizza Fundraiser
On days like yesterday, wouldn't it have been nice to have a frozen Shakespeare's Pizza ready to pop into your oven?
Broadway's Youth Mission Team can help you out with that!  Our youth are raising funds for their next mission trip by selling Shakespeare's Pizza.  Look for the cart across from the mailboxes to place your order.  There are several varieties available, and all cost $12 each.  Pizzas will be available for pick-up on March 15.
Save the Date - Sunday, March 1:
The Milly Project Comes to Broadway
Growing from Broadway's Reconciliation Ministry and Race Forward, The Milly Project will come to Broadway on Sunday, March 1, at 7:00 p.m.
The Milly Project is a stage presentation written and performed by students of Willard High School in south-central Missouri.  The Project tells the story of an enslaved women in Green County, Missouri, who filed suit in the county court and won her freedom.  The story was lost to history until an archivist discovered the handwritten trial transcript in the Green County court records.  A local newspaper 'broke' the story, and the students took it from there!
More details are coming, but please save the date and time to witness this powerful presentation on March 1.
If you would like to ride the Broadway Bus to the Sunday evening performance, please contact Ingrid by  email or at 445.5312.
El Salvador Mission Trip Is June  6-13
Broadway's partnership with Enlace goes back over ten years, and even though our mission team traveled to Puerto Rico last fall, we knew that we would return to the rural countryside of El Salvador!
Our Mission Team will spend a week in El Salvador and possibly some time in Guatemala this summer.  Trip details will be available in the coming weeks, but for now, check your calendars and consider joining the team.  This trip is available to adults and older teens - check with  Debby for more information.
NEOLA Church Camp Calendar Is Out!
Summer seems far away, especially with all of the snow we have had, but it is coming!  If you are already making your child's summer plans, you will need to know when church camp is coming up on the calendar.
The 2020 NEOLA Camp schedule is  available here.
If you have questions, please contact  Pastor Nick Larson.
