A4LE Program: 21st Century Learning: The Evolution of Media Centers - Frederick Douglass High School
|
KENTUCKY CHAPTER TOUR
21st Century Learning: The Evolution of Media Centers -
Frederick Douglass High School
Wednesday, August 7, 2019
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
Address: Frederick Douglass High School, 2000 Winchester Road, Lexington, KY 40509
The event will consist of a 45 minute panel discussion, 15 minutes of Q&A, and a 30 minute tour.
Media Centers strive to ensure that students have equal access to both books and reading, but also to technology and digital based information. Aside from access to information, these spaces embody the goal of connecting students to learning and to each other. As educational environments continue to evolve to adapt to 21st Century Learning practices, Media Centers are also evolving to meet the demands of this shift toward a more collaborative approach to education. This panel discussion will explore both the opportunities and challenges K-12 Media Centers face today along with best practices for making these spaces highly relevant, learner centered and flexible to future changes in education.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand how Media Centers are being used today and how that use has evolved over time. What does a day in a Media Center look like and how does that change from elementary through high school?
2. Explore the opportunities and challenges that face K-12 Media Centers today and identify best design practices for making them highly relevant.
3. Identify design solutions that allow Media Centers to be learner centered, supporting both individual and collaborative learning.
4. Gain insight into "future-proofing" Media Centers to react to changes in both learning and technology.
A4LE Members: FREE | Non-Members: $10

New Book by Michael Koch, AIA "Close to Home"
|
Attention CKC/AIA members!
Oro Editions of San Francisco have published a monograph of the work of Michael Koch. The book is available from the author by emailing a request to
[email protected]. A copy may also be found at Carmichaels Bookstores, Oroeditions.com, and Amazon.com.
From the publisher's synopsis:
The projects featured in Close to Home are within a 15 mile radius of where Louisville architect Michael Koch was born, raised, and has practiced for almost forty years. Educated at the University of Kentucky School of Architecture during the Dean Anthony Eardley era, where he was taught by Guillermo Jullian de la Fuente, Peter Carl, Stephen Deger, Judith Di Maio, Clyde Carpenter, and Herb Greene, Koch has created a body of work in the Ohio River Valley that is site-specific and expressive, translating Kentucky's regional idioms into a vibrant modernism. From airy houses that take advantage of Louisville's Olmsted designed parks and local materials, to structures that are strikingly adapted to the Ohio River floodplain, to church inspired metropolitan projects, Koch's buildings are a memorable part of the city's landscape. Close to Home presents the award winning achievements of his firm Michael Koch and Associates Architects, and introduces readers to the simple elegance of his designs and the meaningful contributions he has made to the architecture of Kentucky.
