July 2019
Historic Tax Year!

It's been a GREAT  year in the Trustee's Office!

Shelby County's Fiscal Year 2019 ended June 30th and I am so proud of our team at the Trustee's Office.  Our collection rate for the year ending June 30th was a RECORD BREAKING 97.12% !  Our team set another record for dollars collected in the month of June, bringing in $5.5 million - almost double any past June!

Property tax collections, as a percentage of the amounts billed, were at record numbers across almost all categories!  The differences in percentages, although small, represent a lot of tax dollars.

Adding to our historic year, the interest earned on the investment portfolio of Shelby County exceeded even my expectations. Our Shelby County portfolio continues to return a higher rate than the State of Tennessee's investment portfolio this year.  While the Trustee's i nvestment income in Fiscal Year 2018 was $8.5 million for the entire year, in Fiscal Year 2019, we almost doubled that, earning $ 16,597,332

The County tax rate will remain $4.05 for the 2019 tax year and notices will be going out in the mail in the next week or so!

In The News
The GMFEC is Officially Open!

On July 16, we cut the ribbon on the GMFEC.  We already have 85 clients obtaining free one on one financial counseling.  This public service, funded by grants and donations, is available to any Shelby County resident FREE. It is not just another program, it is help for as long as a client needs it.

Our sponsors have been amazing and the City of Memphis joined the list in June with a grant from the Memphis City Council! Many thanks to the Cities for Financial Empowerment, Shelby County, MLGW, the Assisi Foundation and particularly our non-profit partner, RISE Foundation. The GMFEC is a sponsored program of the Women's  Foundation for a Greater Memphis and a "Driving the Dream" program of United Way.

The Center is located on the ground floor at 254 Court Avenue, at Fourth Street, has an  on-site operations manager, certified financial counselors, and administrative staff to assist with scheduling financial counseling appointments. It is designed to be a resource center for Shelby County citizens in need of information, financial counseling and coaching, and referrals to other social services and benefits. The counselors will be mobile, traveling to various co-location partner sites throughout the County for the convenience of citizens.

The prior programs promoted by the Trustee's Office: Project H.O.M.E., Bank On Memphis, and On My Own - will now operate under the umbrella of the GMFEC. For more information about the GMFEC, please contact Molly Polatty at 901-222-0206 or [email protected] or visit the GMFEC website at www.gmfec.org .

New payit platform for electronic payments launched - payitShelby is now payit901

In May, the Shelby County Trustee's Office and City of Memphis joined together in the new payit901.com, where taxpayers could also enroll in e-Billing for the 2019 tax year.

On July 1, the payit901 app was launched for taxpayers to pay both their county and city taxes.

The payit platform has been very successful for the Trustee's Office.  Since it's inception, we have had an increase of 22% in electronic payments. Over 40,000 taxpayers are using the app and over 4,000 have now signed up for e-Billing. Try it!

Calls Answered at 99+%
In an effort to ensure that our taxpayers are assisted timely, the Trustee's Office strives to have the highest answer rate possible within our time limit.  For the month of June, 99.36% of all calls received were answered and assisted within 20 seconds.  Our great team at the Trustee's office has maintained a rate over 99% within 20 seconds for 15 months now.

Trustee's Office Staff Updates

In June, we were thrilled to welcome back  Pranathi Boddu  to the Trustee's Office as our Manager of Information Services. Pran previously served the Trustee from 2015 to 2018 as an integral part of our team.
This summer we also welcomed a great crew of interns to the office at the end of May.  Thank you to Taylor Gipson, Franky Mills, Lance Fleming, Cameron Grogan, Carlos Jamerson, Jr., Salem Moses, and Spencer Fleming for all your hard work!

Coming in August - A Promotion and Two New Additions!

With the retirement of our Deputy CAO Tina Walker at the end of July after 28 years of service, I am pleased to announce that Alicia Lindsey will fill that role.  Alicia has been serving as the Director of Accounting for this office since June 2016 and was previously with the Trustee's Office for 8 years before working with Shelby County Finance and then serving as the Budget Director and CFO for Shelby County Schools.
Congrats Alicia!

Additionally,  Jason Hamm  join be joining the Trustee Staff as the Director of Technology and Services.  Jason has worked closely with the office as our contact in Shelby County IT Services.  He will bring a wealth of knowledge and continuity for our IT needs and will take on the enormous task of bringing in our new AR software - replacing a 20 year old system.  So glad to have you aboard Jason!

Our final addition to the team will be  Jack Turner .  He will be joining our delinquent tax attorney team to assist with Tax Sales.  Jack previously served as a Shelby County Assistant Attorney and is a graduate of University of Alabama Law School.
