SUMMER MUSIC AT YORK FIRST
The choir had the month of February off this 2018-2019 season. To make up that time we sang through the first 3 Sundays in July. It was a welcome change for our summer season due to the fact that the choir was not absent for so much of the summer. Soloists for the remainder of the summer are practicing their music to inspire you through the end of the summer season.
July 28 - Mike Frock - Organ - Our own Mike Frock will be playing one of the great Toccatas written for organ by Widor.
Aug 4 - Susquehanna Choral Quartet - They will be singing acapella for us. The group is singing for a fee to help pay for their music for next season. I have donated to this cause. Please feel free to do the same. Just mark your donation for the Quartet and place it in the offering plate.
Aug 11 - Our soloist from our choir and praise singers Pam Baldwin will be singing for us.
Aug 18 - Guest Soloist Caroline Wolfe will be singing. Caroline has blessed us with her voice on Christmas Eve with her "O Holy Night" and she has joined us for our cantatas in recent years. Caroline will be starting her junior year at Oberlin Conservatory. She directed and performed Miss Havisham's Wedding Night" written by Dominic Argento in York this summer. Some of you attended that performance.
Aug 25 -York Symphony violinist and our dear sister Nonie Detrick will be playing her violin. She will be doing contemporary arrangements of familiar hymns.
Sept 1 - Dan Snook, our choir member and wonderful storyteller will be blessing us with some music from the piano. I am excited to hear him play the offertory.
For Special Music, our baritone Chancel Choir soloist Barry Hollinger will be singing for us.
Sept 8 - Our 2019-2020 choir season starts.

"Notes from the Console," Article 1, By Mike Frock
As a reminder, this Sunday, July 28th, 2019, I will be attempting to play the "Toccata" by Widor (pronounced either "Veh-door" or "Vee-door"). The composer's full name is Charles-Marie Jean Albert Widor, and he lived from 1844-1937. Among others he studied organ technique with Jacques-Nicolas Lemmons who is remember to history for his emphasis on pedal technique and his affinity for the organ music of Bach. At the age of 24, Widor was appointed as the assistant to Camille Saint-Saëns at a church in Paris, and at 25 he was appointed to the most prominent organist position in Paris, a position which he held for 64 years. Widor was regarded as one of, if not the, greatest organists of his time. He succeeded César Franck as the organ professor at the Paris Conservatory. Widor's assistant/student was Marcel Dupré, and other students included Albert Schweitzer, Oliver Messiaen, and Darius Milhaud, all of whom became successful composers in their own right. He co-founded and was the Director of the American Conservatory in Paris where Nadia Boulanger was employed. He was succeeded as Director by Maurice Ravel. I was unable to find any connection between Widor and Claude Debussy, but I find it inconceivable that they could have both lived in Paris at the same time and not have known of each other, and find it unlikely that they would not have had some interaction.
As was stated in the last article the "Toccata" is the fifth movement of Widor's fifth Organ Symphony, of which he composed ten. The piece became popular within his lifetime, and he was pleased with the recognition. However, it is well documented that he was displeased with the high speed at which other organists played the piece. There is a recording on YouTube of Widor playing his Toccata. If the piece is played too quickly it loses its musicality and begins to sound like an etude exercise, but if played too slowly sounds like a dirge. I will try to play at a tempo in the middle where the excitement of the music can be retained yet still be played cleanly. I said previously that the work showcases the full range of pitches on the organ, as well as the abilities of the organ as far as tonal registration, coupling, and dynamic range. I will be using about 2/3 of the stops on the organ with stops from all five divisions of the organ (the pedal, the three manuals, and the movable Solo division), and about 1/2 of the couplers. The piece calls for dynamics from
pp
to
fff
. I will play at
fff
, but with that many stops pulled, even at the huge block chords at the end of the piece, I will not play at more than 50% of the volume of which the organ is capable, because I do not want to blowout anyone's eardrums, including my own!
